3rd Wide Receiver

Capt. Don : 3/16/2018 9:23 am
We have a lot of holes and certainly they are not going to all be filled in FA or even after the draft.

But one of them that no one is really talking about is our 3rd WR?

Are we going to give Marshall another shot? Roger Lewis? Are there any bargain WRs out there? What would be your plan?

With Engram's versatility I dont think it is a huge hole but a hole nonetheless. I do think this is a good draft if you are targeting a WR in the late 2nd early 3rd. Someone like DJ Chark or even Courtland Sutton might fall.
I'm more worried about #2 WR
Dave : 3/16/2018 9:25 am : link
SShep is fine as #3 out of the slot

its the spot that BMarshall was supposed to play that needs to be filled, imo
Waive Marshall and Harris
jeff57 : 3/16/2018 9:28 am : link
Sign Crabtree.
I'd grab a sure handed cheap vet from the bottom of the FA list
Eric on Li : 3/16/2018 9:29 am : link
Eric Decker supposedly had issues with drops this year but he'd kind of fit the bill otherwise. The Steelers non-tendered Eli Rogers, he has some versatility and plays tough. Kamar Aiken is another guy who was thought of as a tough/sure handed receiver.

I'd probably wait until after the draft though. If the value is there in round 3 or 4 it wouldn't shock me if they drafted a WR.
I don't know how they can look at the film,
Doomster : 3/16/2018 9:31 am : link
and the effort made by Marshall on some of those throws to him, that make them want to bring him back....

We need a #2 WR, and it shouldn't be Marshal, Lewis, King, Powe, etc.
I expect Marshall is on his way out.
Ira : 3/16/2018 9:33 am : link
Of the other receivers on the roster, I thought Powe looked like he had potential before his latest injury, but more as a reserve than as a regular player. I expect we'll add someone to replace Marshall - either in the draft or free agency. The guy I like in the draft is D J Chark. He's 6'3, ran a 4.34 with a 40" vertical at the combine, he's got good hands and handles himself well as a person.
I agree with Dave. Shepard needs to be in the slot.
Victor in CT : 3/16/2018 9:35 am : link
They need a big, rangy, physical recevier outside to compliment Beckham and Shepard.
Jordan Matthews
Rjanyg : 3/16/2018 9:40 am : link
is still unsigned I believe.

I wanted Donte Moncrief but Uncle Tom in Jax snagged him :(
I shouldve been more clear...
Capt. Don : 3/16/2018 9:42 am : link
by 3rd WR I did not mean slot position.

I just meant, we have two receivers that I am very comfortable but in today's NFL you need 3 starting WRs and we dont have a 3rd starting WR.
Jordan Matthews would be a nice signing
SirYesSir : 3/16/2018 9:45 am : link
as long as the doctors are on board.

Crabtree will cost some money, I'd rather use that on Honey Badger if possible.
Matthews drops too many passes
jeff57 : 3/16/2018 9:47 am : link
.
WR
stretch234 : 3/16/2018 9:56 am : link
I would look at Crabtree, Maclin or Decker

Marshall showed enough last year to justify moving on from him - he is done
One other thing about Marshall.....
Doomster : 3/16/2018 10:04 am : link
He said he came to the Giants because he didn't want to be the #1 receiver anymore.....there was a reason why he said it, and it was never more apparent in the first game, when OBj didn't play...

That #2 WR has to have #1 potential....
I'm not worried about WR
gidiefor : Mod : 3/16/2018 10:04 am : link
give us a running game and I can live with Roger Lewis, Darius Powe, or Travis Rudolf at #3
I was as disappointed with Marshall as anyone last year
Dinger : 3/16/2018 10:06 am : link
but I think he is also someone who is GREATLY affected by the clubhouse/locker room atmosphere. I truly believe that there were(maybe still are) some bad 'apples' in there and I am not being funny about Eli Apple as I believe he is just very immature. I'm talking the likes of Hart, Pug and Richburg and I think if you look at their comments in the press and then their performance on the field it doesn't match up. I'm hoping the new team in place, from GM to punter, has a better attitude/demeanor. I think you keep marshall around and try to also sign a decker or the likes. WR's can be frail. Draft one in the mid to late rounds. But I think you have a lot of options for eli and with an improved line, the likes of OBJ, EE, and SS will have more success leading who ever is the '2nd' receiver to get his passes if not in the beginning of the year starting in mid to late october, hopefully when everything starts coming together.
Not that worried
mavric : 3/16/2018 10:07 am : link
because the combo of OBJ / Shepard / Engram, we can wreak havoc on opposing defenses. If we get Barkley (which is a pretty good chance - I think it's about a 60:40 chance [maybe 80:20]), then we will have a lot of options for distributing the ball through the air. Especially if we have established a solid run game....which has been the biggest hindrance to having a great, great air game as everyone prepares for the Giants knowing in advance that about 80% of the plays will be pass plays since we suck at carrying the ball

We have a couple of up and comers as well (Travis Rudolph, Amba Etta-Tawo, etc.) and we'll pick up a WR in the draft and probably a couple more UDFAs. And heck, if Marshall is fully healthy, maybe he's got a good year left in him and can pick up 800 - 1000 yards and a few TDs. I'm actually excited to see what Etta-Tawo can do as I watched him at Syracuse utterly tear up defenses while making circus catches and making lots of yards after catch. Time will tell
I think philosophy is changing....
BillKo : 3/16/2018 10:22 am : link
..in the past, Reese would go for another WR, and make it a priority.

I think this new regime goes with improvements to the OL and running game, which makes the rest of the offense "easier" in some sense.

Guys getting open is easier when you have the threat of a run game, and can pass pro.

Agree, not sure if he improved that in BUF but was an issue in Philly.

What?!
I know it was mentioned the other day,,Brandon Coleman cut by NO
Tom in NY : 3/16/2018 10:29 am : link
might make an interesting addition to the team.

A Rutgers guy that got significant playing time at NO. Tall, can run...might be worth a cheap salary plus incentives.
If he gets cut in camp, no harm/no foul.
I believe he is in his 4th season, so should still be around 25/26 years old.

I wouldn't be opposed to Matthews either. Yeah the drops both er me, but he would be a credible threat opposite OBJ and Sheppard.
A cheaper option
madeinstars : 3/16/2018 10:31 am : link
Could be former Saint Brandon Coleman. Dude is huge, a good blocker and still young enough with some upside.

Yeah, also wanted Moncrief. Good player and still ascending. Why Tom, why?
Crabtree,
BIGbluegermany : 3/16/2018 10:50 am : link
would be nice
Value wise
idiotsavant : 3/16/2018 11:01 am : link
Or...emphasis wise, if you see a Jason Whitten or a great block/catch TE in the draft (emphasis on run blocking and play action in all things offense, the RB, the OL. Etc.) You take the player.

On certain sets your wide out or slot, depending, being then ODB and E.E. rather than ODB and a roster 'wr' (EE being a better run blocker when blocking a db down field than he is while blocking a big pro level DE in line)..

You kill two birds w one stone.

Sure.. Ellison good player but his run / pass blocking didn't show as we were told. In addition, 12/13p. In addition future years. TE = another hog. = using EE all over.
WR
stretch234 : 3/16/2018 11:19 am : link
With Reese drafting WR here lets be fair.

Reese drafted Nicks after they had to part ways with Plaxico

Reese went for Randle in 2012 because Nicks got hurt that year.

He drafted OBJ in 2014 because they lost Cruz to an injury they thought he was done from

You also had S. Smith career essentially end in 2010

You have to replace that talent somehow

Toth029 : 3/16/2018 11:31 am : link
Thanks to Crabtree.

Apprently a problem in Oakland last year. Also unproductive.
Looks like it will be Marhsall or
JonC : 3/16/2018 11:33 am : link
a draft pick. Crabtree is a weird inconsistent player, runs bad routes, frequent mental errors, drops, etc.

Agree...except I think they add a young player in the draft. My guy is Tre'Quan Smith. Also really like Cedrick Wilson. Both you can work them in as they prove themselves, with no expectations for snaps or big money that a free agent would have.
I like Marshall
DonQuixote : 3/16/2018 11:57 am : link
...he did drop an important throw, but he was also overthrown a lot. He and Eli were not in sync. I think Marshall is better than most FAs out there...don't let last years expectations could your judgement.
Eli not in sync with Marshall?
Giant John : 3/16/2018 1:06 pm : link
C’mon. Marshall could not get open last year then he got hurt. In this league if a receiver can’t get open he is toast. What if OBJ decides he wants to sit a few games because he doesn’t like his contract? Or gets hurt. What if SS gets hurt again? How did that work for the offense last year? Wide receiver is a definite need. Give me a guy that runs like a deer, catches and blocks.
Watch that put a fire under OBJ’s butt. Which is what he needs, yes we need another good receiver. Just like this team has many other needs.
You mean #2 WR
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/16/2018 1:07 pm : link
Shepard is the slot guy when the play doesn't call for Odell to be there.
I can't believe there is even 1 fan amongst us
Dave : 3/16/2018 1:30 pm : link
who would be fine w lewis/king/powe/or rudolph as the #2

and BMarshall showed less than nothing last year

#2 WR is a big need for this team, imo
I wanted decker more than Marshall last year
djm : 3/16/2018 1:46 pm : link
I’d take him this year too
I'll regurgitate my admiration for Amba Etta-Tawo
mavric : 3/18/2018 11:08 am : link
Yes, I know he did nothing at Maryland, but he blew up the field when he transferred to Syracuse (caught 47 passes for 834 yards and six TS's in the first six games - then racked up 94 receptions and 1,482 receiving yards averaging 123.5 yards per game. Prolific receiver breaking and setting all records for SU Wide Receivers. 6-2, 210 lbs, 4.4 speed and can make circus catches.

Very raw, but extremely athletic, fast, and sure hands. Needs to learn NFL route tree and the game in general. Went undrafted (even though he was ranked anywhere from the 2nd best receiver in the draft to top 10) and was expected to be drafted between 4th-6th round because of his rawness.

Regardless, Kansas City signed him, cut him and he's now on the Giants' roster. He has potential under the right coaching to outshine Lewis, King, Powe, etc. Hopefully he steps up this Summer to prove he's a stud.

it's up to him now, but we do have a need at Z receiver as I don't trust Marshall to get his head out of his arse this season.
