Remaining Free agents

Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 11:54 am
Hey guys. New to the board and happy to be here. I scanned the list of remaking free agents and have a few out of the box thoughts. It’s not meant to be controversial. Pure Xs and Os.

Two thoughts:

1.) Sheldon Richardson. My wife, despite my adoration of her, comes from a long time Jet family and holidays have been painful given the fan base bitterness but Sheldon Richardson is a beast and might come cheap given his departure from Seattle and NYj. The possibilities of him lining up with the guys we have, if the $$ is right, could be tremendous. Depth on the line is critical in our division.

2.) Colin Kapernick. We don’t know squat about Davis Webb and on Amy given Sunday Eli could turn old and useless. If they go Barkley with #2 I really think that could add some incredible options for Coach Pat
Kaepernick makes zero sense on the Giants.
81_Great_Dane : 3/16/2018 11:57 am : link
He's a completely different kind of QB than Eli. He needs an entirely different offense. You have Kap or you have Eli, not both. Neither makes sense as a backup for the other.

Kaepernick is better than a lot of backup QBs but it's not just whether he's "better," it's whether he's a fit.
Yes on Richardson
Frankie in Flushing : 3/16/2018 11:59 am : link
No on Kap
Don't
ryanmkeane : 3/16/2018 12:00 pm : link
want anything to do with Richardson. If we want high character guys in the locker room, he ain't one
Yes but
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 12:04 pm : link
Shurmur runs and offense that is much like Andy Reid's West Coast, norv’s vertical and even a little chip Kelly. Yes, Eli and Kapernick are night and day but I’d argue that Kap would be better in Shurmur’s offense especially if Barkley is in there. We al know Eli will start but for how long. Not that long I’m my opinion.
Didn't Richardson just sign with the Vikings?
Blue21 : 3/16/2018 12:06 pm : link
.
Shurmur's Offense
BlueinRoch : 3/16/2018 12:11 pm : link
His "thing" is being able to tailor an offense based on it's strengths. Assuming he sees Eli as a strength, he will be creating an offense that does not play into the strengths of Kap. Can't have it both ways and be effective.
No Thanks
HumbleGiant : 3/16/2018 12:11 pm : link
Kap makes no sense. The only way I see him in a Giants jersey would be if Eli goes down and Webb just completely sucks AND we are in playoff contention. That's why we are picking a QB with the second pick
Eli isn't bad enough
Pep22 : 3/16/2018 12:12 pm : link
You want to add Kap too?

Just keep Eli and draft the QB you like best:

Rosen - and he'd start nearly immediately

Darnold or Allen - who would probably sit for a year
The Giants front office is not just trying to add
Mike from Ohio : 3/16/2018 12:19 pm : link
talent to the roster, but change the culture. They are going after guys that they feel will help with chemistry and leadership. Richardson does not fit that description, and we all know what kind of sideshow comes to town with signing Kap. If he were a really talented QB and fit our system, you can live with that. He is not very good, and he putting him in for Eli would like require altering the system to take advantage of his best skills, which is running.

I'd say hard pass on both regardless of price.
Ross Cockrell, Fluker,
clatterbuck : 3/16/2018 12:19 pm : link
apparently are still unsigned and I'm not sure why there's been no action on Cockrell unless his contract demands are way out of bounds.
Richardson is not going to come cheap
Jay on the Island : 3/16/2018 12:21 pm : link
The Seahawks reportedly offered him 11 million per season and he is holding out for more.
Kaepernick isn't a good QB
Jay on the Island : 3/16/2018 12:22 pm : link
Is he better than some backups? Yes he is but he isn't worth all the negative attention that he brings. The Giants should draft either Darnold or Rosen to go with Webb.
I think
Joey in VA : 3/16/2018 12:22 pm : link
After last year this team will absolutely avoid any players of questionable character.
I would look into useful roll playing
idiotsavant : 3/16/2018 12:30 pm : link
Cornerbacks and wrs.

Mainly, due to, I still don't see how those positions generally fit into the draft pool this year and a need argument could be made. Even now as we have started to adress the line .
Except one.....
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 12:30 pm : link
Odell Beckham Jr. Trade him and get this team back to greatness 2 years sooner.
Both are 'trouble' and aren't worth the risk
Giants1956 : 3/16/2018 12:31 pm : link
Bobby, with all the problems the Giants currently have
why add to it.. Kap was nothing but OK when things
were working.

Richardson, if we signed him, would have then played
with 3 teams in about a year.

I get it
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 12:35 pm : link
I get the concerns about Richardson and it looks like he signing with Vikings anyway but I like players who are motivated w/our multi year deals and need cash.

My Kap suggestion is more about the fact that I don’t think DG likes these QBs and May go with Manning/Webb and I think Kap is a good insurance policy in the vent man I FiS awful(possible) and Webb is not a starter(probable)

How does trading Beckham help you rebuild quicker?

Haven’t you seen enough
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 12:49 pm : link
I think it’s almost a lost year with Manning at the helm and we are essentially rebuilding on the fly. But, we lost a lost of games last year. I don’t think the team as is gets us back to playoffs. Embrace that! Saints traded cooks and a 4 for a 1 and a 7. Giants would get a lot more for Beckham. In 2-3 years when we are legit contenders again I’d rather have 2-3 Potential starters rather then a hobbled Beckham

So by your logic the Giants will be better by trading away the most talented player on the roster for draft picks that won't be anywhere near as talented as Beckham?

But that's the Barkley versus QB argument in reverse. Everybody has a plan and it's a toss-up which would be the best strategy.

Yes, that’s 100% correct. A talent (and headache) like Beckham on a non Contender is useless. Use the value of his worth to build a monster. We all know how these diva WR stories end up and they are never good.
advice to all new posters
GiantsLaw : 3/16/2018 1:24 pm : link
don't advocate trading our best player. don't advocate for signing the lightning rod of the league.
Short sighted
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 1:27 pm : link
Ok thanks for the advice. I’ll still propose trading Beckham is at least worth consideration and I’m confident DG is at least exploring the possibilty. You want to give him $100mm? I thinks it’s a bunk deal
And I wouldn’t do it.

You do realize Beckham is only 25 years old right? You act as if he only has two good years left. He should be apart of this team moving forward as trading your 25 yar old best player is a terrible way to build your roster.
So you want to trade beckhm
nygiants16 : 3/16/2018 1:32 pm : link
In hopes of drafting a player who turns out to be just as good as b eckham? Makes sense...

Teams don't go and trade one of the best players in the league, makes very little sense
Gonna be a no for me dawg

Yes explore the trade
Bobby from Bensonhurst : 3/16/2018 1:39 pm : link
No finding a player as good as Beckham is almost impossible. But, armed with the draft capital that comes with him reliable staters at important positions are entirely possible. I get it’s not norm to trade a 25 year old player like him but his off field issues, busted ankle, immaturity and what we could get in return makes me pause to think about it for sure. Bedsides, the biggest game of his pro life was littered with dropped passes!!!
Beckham is a good guy
PhilSimms15 : 3/16/2018 1:40 pm : link
Sure he is immature. And yes, has certainly done some dumb things. But let's keep it in perspective. He has never been arrested. Has never been accused of a crime. Is very popular in the locker room.

And, he is a generational talent. When he is healthy, he is one of the top 3 WR's in the league and demands double teams.

Why some fans want to trade a player who, with health, is heading to the hall of fame and is all of 25, is beyond me.

What off the field issues?

Immaturity? Why because he dances?

How did Eli do in his first playoff game?

How many games did they win that year because of beckham?
I would explore Bobby
NikkiMac : 3/16/2018 2:15 pm : link
I am with you and believe me it’s not going to be popular around here

But I don’t want to give him $100 million either

Some people think oh he’s done so much for the team

I don’t buy it super talented player but a me first millennial all the way

Baker Mayfield same way me first guy wants to be rookie of the year

Why wouldn’t you rather do the TEAM thing and win the SB

Please Giants draft Rosen and don’t even think about the guard

Would a me first player be the first guy to welcome players to the giants?

Would a me first guy when nfl network wants to interview him say I want my other receivers there to?

How many meetings or practices has this me first player missed?

The focus on bringing in team first guys and guys that love football
Rjanyg : 3/16/2018 2:24 pm : link
has been made a priority. Changing the culture of the locker room. Kap and Richardson won't help in those areas so a big fat no to both.
Just my opinion
NikkiMac : 3/16/2018 2:26 pm : link
You have yours
Why do people consider him a me first player?
nygiants16 : 3/16/2018 2:28 pm : link
Is it the endorsements? The hair? The dancing? What is it that people hate b eckham so much?

Maybe it's because he takes 15 yard penalties and claims he doesnt care and will do it again?

Ok fair enough I can see how that can rub people the wrong way...

But really how many 15 yard penalties has he taken 4 in his career? 5 maybe?

TE’s who go 6-6, 257, 4.57 time and just 23 years old can’t see why we don’t give this kid a look. I know many say he needs blocking basic training but not much else missing to work with. It’s not like we are loaded at TE not impressed with anyone but Engram on the roster the rest are all nothing special at all.
And no one is expecting
NikkiMac : 3/17/2018 9:02 am : link
That either it’s a possibility
