1 seed has never lost before in the tournament, let alone a 31-2 team that is the #1 overall seed. This would be one of the all time historic upsets if they can pull it off. Thought this might deserve its own thread to alert people who aren't watching.
Sorry.
South
Sure, it's an upset but it's not like taking out Ewing and Georgetown in the first round. Or Hakeem and Houston or Larry Johnson and UNLV, Laettner and Duke or the Fab 5. Virginia is a strong team, never a great team.

God Isola is a jerk. There are no teams remotely like those GTown or UNLV teams anymore. Hasn't been for the last 10 years at least. Still the 1's have all managed to handle the 16 usually with ease so this is historic and people are going to react especially when the 16 wins in a rout.
You are such a pathetic, miserable piece of shit.
Lose your #6 guy and go to a 6 seed. Are you nuts?

A little harsh, no?
I’m sorry for Virginia fans on the board. That’s brutal to take after all that Virginia accomplished. Gotta hand it to UMBC. They came to play the game.

Pot...Kettle?
Hokie Hi!
Don't think I'd call Kentucky bad. They won the SEC tourney and the sec is pretty good this year.
They just couldn't miss. Seems like every crazy shot they put up went in.
I thought they said the 53 points UVA gave up in the 2nd half tied the most they gave up in a full game all year. Crazy.
Kmed-a true profile in courage!
There are certain things the team needs to fix to its system to make it a better March team than a regular season team, but what the team accomplished this year (20-1 in the ACC), and what Tony has done over the last five years has been phenomenal and I wouldn't trade him for any coach in the world. I'm fearful of what this loss can do to recruiting.
This is going to be very tough for the kids on the team to deal with, and there are a lot of life-lessons to come from it. If I were any of their parents, I couldn't think of anyone I trusted more to impart that wisdom than Tony Bennett. Even in defeat, Tony was as classy as could be.
Hats off to UMBC. They outplayed us, they out-hustled us, and they played loosely with no fear or hesitation. We were tight, flat-footed, and stunned.
Underdog stories are awesome, but they would never happen if things went according to plan.
It just kills me that it happened to the team I love most. If this were going to happen, I would have much preferred it happened to a dirty program.
One elite 8 appearance under the current staff in 5 appearances. 4 or them as a top 1 or 2 seed

Until this year, I could chalk it up to bad luck and requiring a deeper dive to understand what happened.
2014: Michigan State was a Vegas favorite and a 4-seed. It was a tight game the whole way. We were up in the second half until our best post player, Anthony Gill, hobbled his ankle and left the game. Lost on the last possession by 2 points in Sweet 16.
2015: Round of 32 against criminally under-seeded 7-seed Michigan State Team . Justin Anderson, our best athlete and first round pick, had appendix removed AND broke a bone in his hand late in the season and so he was rendered ineffective. He was our best attacker. We then had to rely on 3s, couldn't hit, fell behind early and battled back but it wasn't enough.
2016: We were rolling, had a double-digit lead against Syracuse in 2nd half of Elite 8. They put on a press and we just collapsed at the very end. Rumor was Brogdon had an undisclosed injury (was 2-for-14) but I don't have solid information on it so I won't rely on that. Brutal choke job.
2017: When we kicked Austin Nichols off the team (5 star big man), we had no inside game and so we were a good team that no one expected to do anything. Isiaiah Wilkins, our best defender and best big had two bouts of pneumonia, lost 40 pounds and didn't play against Florida and we got blown out.
This year, well this year was the worst performance we had all season by so many measures. We weren't even an inconsistent team. It didn't make sense. We lost two games all season by a combined 7 (or 8) points and one required overtime. Somehow, we played historically bad, literally.
------
I've long maintained that we are a better regular season team than March team because we are prepared and give 100% effort all season. But I do think the narrative is overblown.
