But it will be difficult to build a winner this year with only 5 draft picks. We still need an injection of at least 3 DB’s, 2 LB at a minimum for the defense. Also at least 1 if not 2 OL, 1 RB and 2 WR. These need to be real NFL players with a few of them being at least good. That is 11 right there. Also, I don’t see the Beckham thing ending well. There really is little cap space until June of next year when JPP and Vermon can be cut and save 29 Mill. If we are trying to win we probably need to sign several June 1 cuts this year in addition to what happens in the draft. The math doesn’t add up well in several areas. The only way we have a better chance to win now is to maneuver in the draft . I don’t even want to touch the OBJ subject, but he could be traded for picks. I’m not even sure what teams would offer for a supremely talented but emotionally erratic player who wants a gazillion dollars at the WR position. It might not be as much as people think. Anyway, in some fashion picking up extra picks in the first couple of rounds would certainly help. I’m just not sure of the GM’s thinking except I’m pretty confidant he doesn’t want to pay a WR 20 mill or anything close to it a year. I don’t even think it is OBJ as the problem. I think he sees the use of resources better spent elsewhere .

This isn't the NBA where teams rank. Every team is in win now mode and they draft for the future. They have a 2 time SB MVP at QB. Of course they are gonna try to win. They are trying to put a strong OL for Eli in 2018 and Rosen/Darnold in 2019 and beyond.

You said it perfectly. Neither Gettleman or Shurmur have a hall pass. At least at the moment they don't. When they draft a QB next month they will have that hall pass. Adds another reason for them to draft a QB. As a GM & HC having/playing a young QB buys you time.

It's not as if you can find very good starting 25 or 26 year old left Tackles and so forth in free agency.

Furthermore, when building for the future you want a functioning system within which to develop young players.

So you do what you can.

Rookies won't learn as well or have as good outcomes in chaos or when things break down. Then, injuries mount when things are out of sorts.
