Don't Shop Hungry

Jon in NYC : 3/17/2018 11:07 am
Thought this was a quote worth re-sharing from Gettleman in one of his interviews with WFAN back in January

Quote:
“The whole purpose of free agency is to set up your draft. You never go into a draft saying ‘I gotta have a,’ whatever that ‘a’ is. You don’t want to be in that spot because now you’re shopping hungry,”

I have to tip my cap to the old man, because he has put the Giants in a position to shop on a fairly full stomach. Here is the current starting roster:

QB: Eli Manning

RB: Wayne Gallman/Jonathan Stewart

WR: Odell Beckham Jr.
WR: Brandon Marshall
Slot: Sterling Shepard

TE: Evan Engram

LT: Nate Solder
LG: Patrick Omaneh
C: Brett Jones
RG: John Greco/Jon Halapio
RT: Ereck Flowers

DE: JPP
DT: Damon Harrison
DE: Dalvin Tomlinson

OLB: Olivier Vernon
ILB: B.J. Goodson
ILB: Alex Ogletree
OLB: Kareem Martin

CB: Janoris Jenkins
CB: Eli Apple
Slot: Donte Deayon

FS: Darian Thompson
SS: Landon Collins

Honestly? Not bad. If you look up and down there, there is a lot of talent, and most major holes have been filled. I bolded what look like major weak points, but even those are at the moment being filled by guys with NFL experience and/or promise.

The caveat is that the depth on the team is downright atrocious at the moment, but that ties into my bigger point, which is that DG and co have put themselves in a position where they can enter the draft and pick the best five players, but also don't desperately need anyone to step in and start day one, like we have seen in the recent past.

This post is not to say that the Giants will be a super bowl contender next year, or even a competitive team. But I have seen a lot of doomsday posts recently, and the fact is, DG can co have put them in a position they don't have to shop hungry, and I think he deserves a fair amount of credit for that.
What if I am hungry and need food?

Late.
Typo

Didn't mean to say E.E. as first option at #2 WR.
I'd hate to admit this but

It may be possible that John Jerry is in the mix at RG. It also looks like CB is the biggest need along with interior OL. I am expecting a C/G prospect being a high priority in round 2 or 3.
I think we're still pretty hungry

Major Weak Points
Jim in Tampa : 3/17/2018 11:36 am : link
Eli Apple should be a major weak point. Hasn't really ever played well and has a piss-poor attitude to boot.

Darian Thompson is also a major weak point in my book.

And I hate to say it, but I'm not sure how anyone could NOT consider the QB position to be a major weak point. Eli is not just 37, he's also coming off two consecutive years of declining performance and of course Webb was drafted in the 3rd RD in a down year for QBs. How can you not consider QB to be a major weak point on this team?

Yet you consider the RB position with Gallman (4.3 YPC) and Stewart (a vet with some left in the tank) to be a major weak point.

Judging by your "weak points" list I assume you believe that the Giants should draft Barkley instead of their future QB.

I would love to trade with with the Broncos and take Barkley or Nelson at 5.
Good points OP
DennyInDenville : 3/17/2018 11:45 am : link
Looking at the roster it's clear our top needs are CB, FS, and WR2 imo.
3 skill positions. I like Gallman age RB tbh but would like Darkwa back if we don't take Barkley.

However DG did sign 2 lower tier CBS to compete, Stewart must have something left if we signed him at RB.

So Guard, FS, CB, DE (JPP future replacement) , and WR2 are our needs.

Would be nice to cut Marshall but maybe DG is headging that he can bounce back and have 1 more good year or perhaps will draft one and cut Marshall later in June and use the money to sign a vet Safety or extra vet LB that shakes loose

So you don't want to draft a QB, so therefor QB is NOT a weak point...but you do want to draft a RB or a G, so those ARE weak points.

Got it.

You have your logic backwards, and are also missing the main point of the thread.

Filling some needs
bc4life : 3/17/2018 12:28 pm : link
can minimize others. Job # 1 OLine and develop a very good running game.

That will positively impact entire offense.

My logic isn't backwards at all. I'm not arguing that RB and RG are NOT weak points (even though I really don't think RB is) I'm just pointing out that you omitted QB as a "weak point" because you don't want to draft a QB. If you had included QB as a weak point I wouldn't even have brought it up.

And who says I have to discuss the main point of the thread?

(I'm mostly just messing with you anyway.)

You eat the stale bread you have rather than getting a fresh loaf. Maybe it's satisfying, maybe it's not but you can put off shopping until later.
