The Eli Factor in choosing QB at #2...

M.S. : 3/17/2018 5:44 pm
...is it fair to say that the Giants perception of draft value at QB is effected by the team's commitment to Eli for perhaps at least the next two years?

In other words, all else being equal, the Giants would prefer a Darnold or an Allen who maybe would benefit more as a backup as opposed to a Rosen (and maybe Baker Mayfield) who are more developed and could step in and start right away.

Any thoughts, comments, observations much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
I don't think so
adamg : 3/17/2018 5:47 pm : link
I think they're going to draft the guy who is the best quarterback. I think it comes down to Mayfield or Rosen. Drafting a project would be a huge mistake imo.
I don't think thye are committed for the next 2 years
BillT : 3/17/2018 5:49 pm : link
Next year, yes. The year after, maybe, maybe not.
I agree
mdthedream : 3/17/2018 5:50 pm : link
and the fans are going to want him on the field ASAP. It is going to get crazy if the Giants are losing and said QB is on the bench waiting to play.
The team's commitment to Eli for the next 2 years?
Jimmy Googs : 3/17/2018 5:52 pm : link
I must have missed that press conference.

They should pick the QB they think is the best at the position. And if he happens to be better than Eli by September then so be it...

I don't think Eli plays into it either
PatersonPlank : 3/17/2018 5:52 pm : link
He's the veteran who plays until the kid is ready. Unlike others however I do think Webb, and what they think of him, does play into the decision
The Eli factor has us choosing....

....Nelson.
Giants say no. I say yes

My only issue
dairborn : 3/17/2018 6:13 pm : link
is this...if you pick a QB at # 2 overall with being committed to Eli this year...are you giving Eli all the tools to win now? Lets see, now we have last year's 3rd rounder and this year's 1st riding the pine.

Now move forward a year...Eli shuts it down and who's your starter? Your going to be looking at two QB's both with little to no NFL experience. Who do you hand the keys to. If it were me, I'd rather just hand the keys to Webb next year and give him my full commitment. Take Barkley at number 2 or move back. This gives support to now and the future. Give Webb all the reps vs splitting them with a new QB and that in turn gives him the full value of the practice time plus 2 years prep going into it having learned under Eli and now Shula and Shurmer.

I just don't see that much of a difference with these prospects vs Webb, and Webb is already a year deep into the program. Seems like a waist to pick another QB unless you have NO DOUBT, but I just don't see clear cut winner.
if you told me that Eli would win the next two Superbowls
markky : 3/17/2018 6:18 pm : link
and I thought one of the QBs was a franchise QB, I would still draft the franchise QB.
The Giants may not even be committed to Eli for this year
Rudy5757 : 3/17/2018 6:26 pm : link
A lot can change after the draft. Maybe Eli would not want to stick around if the Giants draft a QB, maybe the Giants dont want Eli around after they draft a QB. If they got rid of Eli before the draft their cards are on the table and everyone knows they are drafting a QB. Maybe the Giants have already discussed the options with Eli.

I am not saying that is going to happen but it could. I know the Giants are supposed to do things better than other places but it is a business and there are no guarantees. Most companies have a replacement ready to go when they fire someone, why is it different in football? Look how many guys get cut after the draft.

I think the Giants draft a QB and keep Eli but you never know. I would be shocked if they took Barkley, if they dont take a QB I think there will be a trade down.

I hear what you are saying, but after listening to DG and PS...I would be shocked if they were like well we drafted (just for the sake of it) Rosen and we are going to be moving on from Eli after what they said to start the new make over. SHOCKED!!

They seem committed to Eli and unless the season falls apart again I am 99 percent sure he is going to be at the helm one more time.
Of course it does
WillVAB : 3/17/2018 7:20 pm : link
But it’s not about “commitment.” It’s about whether the Giants can win with Eli. If DG thinks so and the early indications are he does, then there’s a lot of risk and sacrificed value using 2 on a QB.
Giants are committed for 2018
Big Rick in FL : 3/17/2018 7:37 pm : link
Highly highly unlikely he's back in 2019 for 23.2 million. They can save 17 million by getting rid of him. Which makes the most sense.

Since our last Super Bowl we are 42-54 with 0 division titles and 1 playoff appearance. Sadly it's time to move on.
The Giants are in an odd situation due to coach/GM turnover.
81_Great_Dane : 3/17/2018 7:38 pm : link
When the Pats had Bledsoe, Little Bill was developing Brady and had an idea that he had something special. When he had Brady and was developing Garoppolo, same thing. He was smart enough to see what he had, skilled enough to develop them, and the organization was stable enough and patient enough to let the young guy develop.

The transition from Reese/McAdoo to Gettelman/Shurmur takes away the stability. We'll see how smart and skilled the new guys are, but they didn't pick Webb, they're not invested in him. They can write him off as another Reese mistake and start with their own developmental guy.

It's an odd situation.
Not a good thing
5BowlsSoon : 3/17/2018 7:46 pm : link
To draft a guy number two and have him hold a clipboard for two years. One year is okay, but not two.
Has anyone Paid Attention
Bruner4329 : 3/17/2018 8:22 pm : link
Most teams rumored to be interested in picking one of these QBs has or recently signed a veteran QB to play at least for this season including the Jets who signed 2 vets. Hello! It is obvious most teams feel none of these guys are capable of starting for a year or 2. None of them are ready to play at this level.
IF any GM stays away from selecting a QB
EricJ : 3/17/2018 8:44 pm : link
fearing negative fan reaction due to hurt feelings (or whatever), then that GM needs to find a new career.

Or Bruner, they feel its a better approach to have a veteran
QB to help a drafted QB transition for the first year.

Given Eli's contribution to the NY Giants it is better
to let him finish out his career with Giants in 2018

The Giants will be competitive in 2018 as long as we
don't get killed again with injuries and it would not
surprise me if they are in playoffs.

With Eli and Webb and the new QB I think we should be
covered at QB for next season.

I love Eli and everything’s a guess at this point...
Toastt34 : 3/17/2018 11:09 pm : link
but at this moment, I’d be surprised if he’s a Giant in 2019. That’s why I think when it’s all said and done, they take QB at 2, it makes too much sense not only on the field but financially moving forward as well.
The presence of Eli...
Milton : 3/17/2018 11:18 pm : link
...allows them to choose a QB who will require more patience, but it doesn't preclude them from taking Rosen if they view him as the most likely to achieve greatness. Rosen could benefit from a year (or two) behind Eli, too, it just isn't absolutely necessary.

Whether Eli remains for only one more year or gets to play out the two years remaining on his contract will be based on how successful he is at leading the team into the playoffs.

In an ideal scenario the Giants manage to trade Eli to the Jaguars after Bortles shits the bed. Given Eli's no-trade clause that would be a difficult thing to pull off, but not impossible.

Seattle spent $20m on a veteran QB the year they drafted russell wilson.

Wilson sent the veteran to the bench. Matt Flynn was active for 3 total games.

Veteran signings don't always mean something.

And your point is...?
It s becoming obvious
joeinpa : 3/18/2018 7:01 am : link
That teams needing a quarterback value this quarterback class more than bbi

All but one are guaranteed to be there for the Giants.

They are more than likely going to take one of them. They will take the guy they think is best. Eli is there as the starter until they deem it is time to move on.
My only concern
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 3/18/2018 9:03 am : link
is that the Browns end up taking Rosen with the first pick. I'm not a big Darnold fan. I think I would opt for Allen.
The Giants have said only that Eli will start next year
Mike from Ohio : 3/18/2018 9:12 am : link
They may believe he can start the next 2 or 3 years, but I would not say they have committed to that. If they love a QB in this draft I think they have to draft him and secure the future of the team when the opportunity presents itself.

If they don't live a guy as a franchise QB, and believe Eli has good football left in him with a different system, then you just take the best player on the board (hopefully with a trade back with Denver at #5).
I think the Giants
RetroJint : 3/18/2018 10:43 am : link
will draft the best QB available , and I think the Giants are 1, 3-game losing streak from the end of the Endless Autumns of Eli. The only scenario whereby Manning starts in ‘19 is that they pull off a 13-3 type season. If they do that ....Hosa!

If the team is losing the kid will play. That’s a lock.

Let it get crazy. Who cares?

Bingo.
I don't think ELi has any factor on what they will do
PatersonPlank : 3/18/2018 11:09 am : link
He is the aging veteran who will keep the seat warm for a year or two while the rookie (Webb or a draft choice) gets ready.
What sucks is this...
EricJ : 3/18/2018 1:00 pm : link
ownership got spooked when they saw the fan's backlash over the Eli benching.

So, even if they draft a QB with their first pick, how long before they feel comfortable sitting Eli will be the real question.
