...is it fair to say that the Giants perception of draft value at QB is effected by the team's commitment to Eli for perhaps at least the next two years?
In other words, all else being equal, the Giants would prefer a Darnold or an Allen who maybe would benefit more as a backup as opposed to a Rosen (and maybe Baker Mayfield) who are more developed and could step in and start right away.
Any thoughts, comments, observations much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
They should pick the QB they think is the best at the position. And if he happens to be better than Eli by September then so be it...
Now move forward a year...Eli shuts it down and who's your starter? Your going to be looking at two QB's both with little to no NFL experience. Who do you hand the keys to. If it were me, I'd rather just hand the keys to Webb next year and give him my full commitment. Take Barkley at number 2 or move back. This gives support to now and the future. Give Webb all the reps vs splitting them with a new QB and that in turn gives him the full value of the practice time plus 2 years prep going into it having learned under Eli and now Shula and Shurmer.
I just don't see that much of a difference with these prospects vs Webb, and Webb is already a year deep into the program. Seems like a waist to pick another QB unless you have NO DOUBT, but I just don't see clear cut winner.
I am not saying that is going to happen but it could. I know the Giants are supposed to do things better than other places but it is a business and there are no guarantees. Most companies have a replacement ready to go when they fire someone, why is it different in football? Look how many guys get cut after the draft.
I think the Giants draft a QB and keep Eli but you never know. I would be shocked if they took Barkley, if they dont take a QB I think there will be a trade down.
They seem committed to Eli and unless the season falls apart again I am 99 percent sure he is going to be at the helm one more time.
Since our last Super Bowl we are 42-54 with 0 division titles and 1 playoff appearance. Sadly it's time to move on.
The transition from Reese/McAdoo to Gettelman/Shurmur takes away the stability. We'll see how smart and skilled the new guys are, but they didn't pick Webb, they're not invested in him. They can write him off as another Reese mistake and start with their own developmental guy.
It's an odd situation.
Or Bruner, they feel its a better approach to have a veteran
QB to help a drafted QB transition for the first year.
Given Eli's contribution to the NY Giants it is better
to let him finish out his career with Giants in 2018
The Giants will be competitive in 2018 as long as we
don't get killed again with injuries and it would not
surprise me if they are in playoffs.
With Eli and Webb and the new QB I think we should be
covered at QB for next season.
Whether Eli remains for only one more year or gets to play out the two years remaining on his contract will be based on how successful he is at leading the team into the playoffs.
In an ideal scenario the Giants manage to trade Eli to the Jaguars after Bortles shits the bed. Given Eli's no-trade clause that would be a difficult thing to pull off, but not impossible.
Seattle spent $20m on a veteran QB the year they drafted russell wilson.
Wilson sent the veteran to the bench. Matt Flynn was active for 3 total games.
Veteran signings don't always mean something.
All but one are guaranteed to be there for the Giants.
They are more than likely going to take one of them. They will take the guy they think is best. Eli is there as the starter until they deem it is time to move on.
If they don't live a guy as a franchise QB, and believe Eli has good football left in him with a different system, then you just take the best player on the board (hopefully with a trade back with Denver at #5).
If the team is losing the kid will play. That’s a lock.
Let it get crazy. Who cares?
Bingo.
So, even if they draft a QB with their first pick, how long before they feel comfortable sitting Eli will be the real question.

and I thought one of the QBs was a franchise QB, I would still draft the franchise QB.
Bingo.
