Trading Down

AdamBrag : 3/17/2018 6:26 pm
After the Jets/Colts trade, it seems like it would put the Giants in a prime position to trade down for a haul of picks. Will this happen? History points to unlikely.

David Gettleman never traded down while the GM of the Panthers. He was trained within the Giants organization and, as an organization, the Giants have been vehemently against trading down. Jerry Reese never trading down got attention. But, Ernie Accorsi only traded down ONCE in his tenure.

Overall, as far back as I could see, the Giants have traded down ONCE since 1990. That's any pick in the draft, not just first round picks.

Just something to think about...
I would assume history would show trade downs being

unlikely for any team because most teams dont do it very often.

Every situation is different.

18 teams traded down in last year's draft alone. 8 teams traded down more then once. That means 8 teams traded down more in last year's draft then the Giants have in the past 25 years.
We can certainly

use a few starters from this draft due to our cap space. And with signing Collins and Beckham more so. So moving down might help but with a few game changers in the top 5 or 6 you would be missing out on those players. Tough call
I don't think history is a great guide to 2018.

The Giants are in a very, very unusual position, maybe unprecedented in franchise history. Gettelman's in his first year as GM of the Giants, they're doing a tear-down/rebuild, the top of the draft is loaded with QB prospects, they need a franchise QB but there are more teams that want QBs than top prospects. So it's a seller's market for that #2 pick, even more than usual.

There's a huge inducement to trade, but also a huge reason to go after one of the QB prospects. Very, very interesting.
I would definitely trade down ...

Webb will be at least as good as any of this years class. With the picks we should be able to get 2 quality OL plus a RB and a LB
It would depend on if next years #1 is included

with several other picks so if it is Denver that would allow the team to draft a premium player this year and possibly have a high first round pick along with their own 32nd pick in the first round next year! My guess is that Elway has to be planning somehow to move up to 1 or 2. They haven't had a young franchise QB since he was on the field and the top three will be gone by his pick. We'll see.

Agreed it's a very interesting spot and I think there could be intriguing trades coming from Denver and Buffalo, I'm just not assigning a high probability the Giants pull the trigger.

With all of this said, I would not have accepted the Jets deal to trade down to 6.

But no QB. 'Webb will be at least as good as any of this
years class...." Spider how do you know that?

Quantity is not always better than quality

I'll trade you 1 Queen and 2 Rooks for 6 Pawns!

They haven’t traded down often but this is an unprecedented situation for the organization.
The drafts a crap shoot

And you’d think that the higher the pick the less the risk. You could take the POV that getting more picks spreads that risk. But unless you cluster draft you’re going for breadth in positions and thus they will all be independent, all of a lower spot than you had, and all with a greater chance of failing. I’m not sure that the best value isn’t still in the singular, greater player.

You're throwing darts. Your opinion is wildly reckless.
History says you don’t trade down if you have a commitment to a QB
Ivan15 : 3/18/2018 6:42 am : link
Prime example is the Eli Manning trade. Chargers wanted Eli Manning despite his protests. They got so many picks from the Giants and they were turned into such high quality picks that everyone was convinced that the Chargers got the better deal.

Fifteen years later, if the Mannings hadn’t dug in, no one would have made that deal.
Don’t see the trade down happening.
Giant John : 3/18/2018 8:46 am : link
This is the Giants chance to get their QB. You can’t pass on that opportunity and the Giants won’t.
Jets move points to No Trade Down
Rafflee : 3/18/2018 10:52 am : link
Logic Here--- the Jets moved up to Draft a QB. The Jets would be sitting in the # 2 slot if the Giants were willing to trade down.

I don't believe the Giants would sit at 2 and pass up a Major Draft haul in Picks Plus the #6 if they weren't thinking QB themselves. The trade to 2 would have been even Richer than the Jets trade to 3.

Assuming that the First 2 Picks would have been QB's at top 2...Browns, Jets.... with Indy taking 1 of the other "to

Browns BQ..,.jets QB... Indy....Browns... Denver...Giants

Indy, Brown, Denver--- Denver wilk take a QB...... that means that the Giants would probably have their Choice of Barkley, Nelson, Chubb at 6---Plus some other names, not to mention 3-5 extra picks over this and next year draft.

Logic sdays the Giants are at 2 because they love at least one QB---maybe 2!...and one of them guy may be available at 6!

At least in the first round though as far back as I can remember, it isn't often it's never.
