In the FA intro press conference, Shanahan talked about how he considers a good center to be really important for his scheme because it allows versatility to block certain linebackers without assistance from guards depending on the formation.
He considered Richburg to be a top center like Alex Mack. After watching the tape and researching his character, he was the #1 OL target for the Niners this offseason.
Shanahan loves his centers about as much as he loves fullbacks and dual threat RBs.
Will be interesting to see this play out.
Was it the injury proneness?
I’m with you.

so we're on the same page, dude lost his job to a guy from the CFL.

The shelved him after a concussion, but apparently Richburg thought he could still play. Makes me think they didn't think he was much of an upgrade, if at all.

With his upcoming free agency I think that the team wanted to evaluate Jones for the rest of the season to see if he was a viable option moving forward.
With the shitty coaching staff and scheme, Shanahan is more likely right than wrong.
Him and Flowers were better with Flaherty and Coughlin around
But too lite in the pants for me

Flowers had his best year as a pro last year (which still wasn't great). His only year with Flaherty and Coughin was his rookie year and he was terrible.
Richburg played guard with Coughlin and Flaherty his first year and was also terrible. Much better his second year, but I thought 2016, without Flaherty and Coughlin was his best year - not sure how or if it's related though.
I tend to say Shanahan is probably right though and for the money he paid he's got the right to find out.

That’s complete bullshit . Even with a bad high-ankle sprain that Flowers played with his rookie season, he was much better than he was healthy in season two.

this past season was season 3, not season 2, and it was IMO his best season.
Here is one excerpt out his performance:
That streak started after he allowed three sacks in a Week 2 loss to the Lions and it is the longest active streak among tackles, according to PFF. Flowers didn't allow a pressure against the 49ers on Sunday, which is only the second time in his career that that's happened.....

He will do well, no one believes me but I still think Richburg has it.

I agree. I think this one comes back and bites us in the ass.
This is a pretty good take from Schwartz. If Wes can stay healthy, his lack of strength won't be such an issue in SF.

Honestly can't think of one player that didn't regress under McAdoo.
From what I heard NYG would've had him back on a 1 year deal but he was determined to test the market.
I wish him well but even when he was healthy and playing well he had some games where he got abused by defensive linemen.

Even if he plays well (and I agree that's a good possibility) it doesn't come back and bites us in the ass because we couldn't invest in Richburg given the two straight years of poor play. We just couldn't ante up a 5-year deal for him. That ship had sailed.
Start running outside zone and play action ala Falcons (shanny)
Or get a big, 320lb + nasty guard- center -guard combo to play 'Mac ball'.
Said go gcg 123 in draft two years in a row, or to that effect.
Still not a huge fan of richburg though and think Jones is better. But we shall see.
He may do well in SF, but he was a liability here. Jones may not be perfect, but adequate is good enough until we draft a replacement. Hell, Jones may improve now that he's the starter.
Chalk up another loss to McAdouche.
So do I. I really thought he would stick around for a long time.
