Defensive end Josh Mauro will visit the Giants, per source. He's set to arrive Sunday. Knows defensive coordinator James Bettcher from time with Cardinals. Fits the scheme. Good 5-technique DE with 26 career starts in four years. He had 22 tackles and a sack last season.

On to the 3-4

Could be someone to alternate with Tomlinson
He would be a better depth option
Jay on the Island : 3/18/2018 4:35 pm : link
than Kerry Wynn.
If he is cheap
Jay on the Island : 3/18/2018 4:39 pm : link
which he should be, he would be a good addition as he is familiar with the scheme and plays at a position of need.
Someone

way OV and JPP are on the team after this season? Neither are a good fit for the 3-4 and both have huge contracts.
We need 3-4 DE depth

OV has a far better shot than JPP. OV can play OLB in a 3-4. It is more likely than not that JPP won't be on the team this time next year. The Giants will save a substantial amount of cap space by releasing Manning, JPP, and OV next offseason.

26 starts and a grand total of 2 sacks. He better be great against the run.

How is JPP not a good fit for 3-4 DE. He's a big man and stout against the run. He can hold the point of attack. OV is too small to be a DE and not nearly fast enough to be a OLB.

Not everyone needs to be JJ Watt.

better check how many sacks Wynn had in how many games. 3 sacks in 10 games started. Not good either but better than Mauro.

Games started might be misleading. How many snaps did Mauro actually play. Wynn with 3 career sacks in 49 games is terrible. Wynn was also playing 4-3 DE which has different responsibilities than a 3-4 DE. Playing end in the 4-3 offers more opportunities to get to the QB as they are aligned outside the OT as opposed to over the T and G.

Vernon played some in Miami. He’s fast enough to play OLB.

I suppose he could be competent as a 3-4 DE but the scheme doesn't maximize his strengths IMO. It will be difficult for him to justify a $20M cap number.

I think it does maximize his strengths. He’s now a better run defender than pass rusher.
Did not hear

his name called very often here in AZ. Maybe an ok backup, certainly not a strong starter.

3-4 DE's do the dirty work. The ones that can also provide pass rush are rare and expensive.

Aaron Thomas : 3/18/2018 5:49 pm : link
Not everyone signed is going to be a "strong starter". this team needs depth all over and DE sure can use some behind the scenes players.

When someone evaluates a 3-4 DE by the amount of asks he has it says all I need to know about the poster.

I guess the Giants shonly concentrate on bringing in 15 sack guys that will cost $15M per year, otherwise why bother...

Amount of SACKS obviously. Damn fat fingers

These mid level guys USED to have impacts on the giants. Lately all these types have stunk under Reese as he only seemed to like athletic fast defensive lineman.

I know everyone wants an all pro at every position and all the depth being just as good. Doesn't work that way. I like signings like this. Less snaps for OV and JPP.

The giants don't have a true 5 tech on the roster. They need one. This is really a 2 down player.

Wide frame can handle the weight. Depth signing. Ran fast at combine.
Could be useful.

Looks like we might add another true Harrison big type DT in draft. Cannot just have one on roster. W suggest sets w 2.

Kareem Martin signs - 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 4 seasons - BBI praise!!

Josh Maruo visits - 55 tackles and 2 sacks in 4 seasons - and BBI turns its collective nose up.

Weird.

Having Robert Thomas ought not influence the draft one iota. J.a.g at best plus that's not how one often drafts.

I'm talking about the blue goose that can play any DT technique, bigs that can rush as opposed to the smaller large-4/3-de types (who are also useful and whom I advocated for often in those days.) We have two of those now more or less.
Keep in mind
idiotsavant : 3/19/2018 8:37 am : link
DL more multiple than OL and becoming much more so now.

DL more rotation than OL also.

No longer the days of just roll out in the same technique all game long.

Correct, if they're looking to trim the fat next season and re-work some personnel, JPP figures the most logical odd man out among the big ticket contracts.
