As mens basketball coach, according to the New Haven Register. After firing Ollie for just cause I thought it would be difficult luring a name candidate. If true, this is a real nice hire. Link - ( New Window )
Damn.
He'll take some kids with him, both the roster and recruits de-committing and, unless URI signs a name coach with good recruiting assistants, will set the program back another 4-4 years.
Could be an op for Tom Garrick, an alum on his staff.
but if it is, I bet they hire David Cox (current assistant) as their next coach, and I think he'd be a good hire. He was the main recruiter of 3 of the incoming guys as well as Jeff Dowtin and Fatts Russel.

Accd to source, the Hurley to UConn report of near done deal is patently false. At same time, hopefully URI admin (beyond athletics) prepared to be creative and proactive to stave off suitors.

You also saw the other side of it play out for years before Texas came along. I'm just hoping UConn isn't our Texas and we can have this same speculation again next year, but you never know.
you have to hold out for a better job than UConn. UConn can't maintain being the power they used to be in the AAC. What kids want to play in the conference? Flying all over the country playing ZERO premier programs. And the expectations at UConn are going to stay the same as they've always been I would think. Not a job I would want to touch.
I would think one of the P5 teams would come calling. UConn is still a good job, the AAC isnt that much below the power conferences, but I think he can get a better offer.
Thats said, I think hes a bit overrated. Hes been able to recruit very well, but his in-game coaching leaves something to be desired.
UConn and Pitt offers. Tough call. Pitt is a tougher rebuild because its ACC. And it has going for it that its ACC.
UConn is an easier rebuild, because its AAC. But then youre stuck in the AAC, which is kind of college basketball limbo.Tough call. Neither is a great option, IMO.

Says the BC guy who lacks a sense of irony. The Judases at BC took the money to go be the Washington Generals in the ACC.

Hurley contacted by both schools per local media in southern N.E.

If Hurley moves on he takes a couple of assistants and kids with him, ESPECIALLY, a good recruiter to hurry the turnaround, and both schools open wallets for the best.

Cox isn't leaving for an assistant job at UConn over a head coach job at URI. He'd probably take Tom Moore though.
Per source: Dan Hurley is willing to take less $ to stay at URI if the school is committed to moving the program forward. #URI @RhodyMBB
This is what Shaka asked for when he was turning down teams.
I'm not sure how URI is supposed to move the program forward. There arena is only a decade old, they have very good facilities, but they are captive to the conference they play in. If you win, prepare to have your HC pilfered. It's a good problem to have.
were more about travel accommodations (for both players and recruiting), a new practice facility, etc....
It stung when he left, but him doing that left us much, much better than when he found us.
Exactly. URI had already updated its facilities before Hurley got there, so they were poised to take that next step. If they make the right hire, I don't see why they can't have sustained success (although losing Terrell and Matthews won't help).
do you think Shaka is happy at Texas? The reason I ask, as a casual college hoops fan, he seemed more on the map at VCU then he does now at Texas. Why he left for Texas, I dont understand. VCU was a good spot for him.
"the ability to get players that can win a championship" like Mo Bamba.
That said, Mo Bamba came into VCU's gym this year and we went toe to toe with them, so I didn't come away all that impressed.
I personally think the right move would have been to stay. We supposedly offered to match Texas's money, but he still left.
Our recruitment level was going up every year that Shaka stayed.
IMO, he had a better chance of building a Championship caliber team here (big fish in a little pond) rather than Texas (little fish in a big pond).
He had a legit chance to make VCU an East Coast version of a Gonzaga level program. I firmly believe that.
But it's an age old story, isn't it? Guys have success at mid major, jump ship for greener pastures and money, looking for job back in the mid majors 4 years (or less) later.
It is a myth that Geno has always recruited well.Rutgers signed more McDonalds All-Americans than UConn for many years.Vivian Stringer said this on her radio show. The games were not close, UConn would destroy Rutgers.

Pitt has offered Dan Hurley a multi-year deal in excess of $3 million dollars annually to be its next head basketball coach, per multiple sources. UConn and URI still in play.
Sounds like RI tried hard to keep him, including offering to build a new practice facility (something Shaka got from VCU, a 25 million dollar basketball only training facility) and competitive money...
Guess we'll see, but like all the others, good chance he's back in the mid majors in 4 years or so.
from the "experts" who said Hurley has his sights set higher than Uconn and would never settle for a shitty job like that and how URI was a better job.
not because I care about Hurley, but I like to see arrogance humbled.
money talks, as usual (my guess is Uconn offered the most)

Everyone thinks they know everything, its funny. UConn is still a great job, don't really care what the mouth breathers say. Not everyone is waiting for Duke and UNC to open up.
Hurley is a NE guy which I suspected mattered a ton for either staying at URI or taking the UConn job. Pitt is solid, but its essentially the midwest distance-wise.
I was very worried the haggling over the severance with Ollie would effect a big time candidates decision. Glad it hasn't. I wonder if Tom Moore's influence nudged Hurley this way as well.

URIs offer, per sources, was $2 million per year for 7 years beginning in July of 2019. Also commitment to build a basketball-only practice facility (to be completed within next 2 years), staff salary increases and ability to charter for all away games. Big-time offer by URI.
He'll take some kids with him, both the roster and recruits de-committing and, unless URI signs a name coach with good recruiting assistants, will set the program back another 4-4 years.

Not everyone is waiting for Roy Williams and Coach K to retire.
Would you? Is this a serious statement?
Ugh, but AAC, really?
That said, a buddy of mine went to UConn and I spent a weekend in Storrs. Yikes. Talk about nothing to do.

What exactly does "moving the program forward" mean?
Losing Hurley could set the program back a lot more than 4 years. We hadn't made it to the tournament for about 20 years before a couple years ago.
