What should the Giants do for their Outside WR?

dep026 : 3/20/2018 11:09 am
Keep Marshall?
Trade for a WR?
Let Lewis win the job?
Draft a guy in the 2nd-3rd round?

We do have a big hole on the outside and with Marshall playing as poorly as he did and being into his 30s. Lewis being inconsistent, and the WR FA market attracted top dollars. I was curious to see if anyone had a name or intrigued by a possible player?
I
AcidTest : 3/20/2018 11:13 am : link
think we're just going to bring a whole bunch of WRs to camp, and let them battle for positions behind OBJ and SS. That would be Latimer, Lewis, King, Sharp, Powe, Rudolph, maybe a late draft pick, and UDFAs. We have a lot of other needs. I'm not sure what we can do at WR this year, unless somebody unexpected falls in the draft and is therefore too good a value to pass up.

I still think Marshall and Harris will be cut.
I would've gone after a sold veteran

We just signed Lattimer
AcesUp : 3/20/2018 11:16 am : link
I think we're okay there, with or without Marshall. I see us playing much more 2 TE sets, with Engram moving out to split end on occasion, I don't see the big need that others do there. At best, that player is the 4th option in the passing game, 5th if we bring in a player like Barkley. At this point, it's much more important to bring in a burner that could take the top off the defense to round out that unit.
I think you let Marshall go
allstarjim : 3/20/2018 11:17 am : link
But at this point I thought it would've happened already. Is there something to his contract that makes a post-June 1st cut more likely?

In any case, I think if the value for a receiver is there in the 4th round, go for it. Otherwise, don't need to force it. The Giants can use Engram outside a lot as well, because he has WR-like skills. I'm even ok with what we have in competition with Latimer, Lewis, Rudolph, Amba Etta-Tawo. Even before the draft, we're talking about the 4th receiving option after OBJ, Engram, and Shepard, so you don't need to go crazy here, but you do want a guy that will have the respect of the defense on the boundary across OBJ. Both Lewis and Latimer will have the ability to hurt guys if you don't, it's just consistency.
If we get extra 2nd round picks,
Ira : 3/20/2018 11:18 am : link
D J Chark is someone that interests me. He's 6'3", ran a 4.34 40 in the combine, has good hands and handles himself well as a person.
Engram to the slot
VinegarPeppers : 3/20/2018 11:18 am : link
Move Shep outside and use Engram as a slot receiver and start Ellison at TE. Especially if we draft Barkley. Imagine the flexibility in that base formation and player package.

It gives us help for the RT with Ellison in some situations. It gives us two TEs on the field for the run. It puts a big fast receiver on a nickel corner. It lets you easily shift into two TEs with OBJ, Shep and Saquan as threats all over the field.

I’m salivating.
Jordan Matthews is still available.
Brown Recluse : 3/20/2018 11:20 am : link
Terrelle Pryor (yes I know. just throwing out names)
Markus Wheaton (what happened to him)
Dontrelle Inman

They've all been productive at some point. Maybe some other names will shake loose later.

Otherwise, they could draft one if the value is there.

I'd be really surprised if Marshall was back, but who knows. Its still very early.

The WR corps is definitely somewhat bare right now. And most of them are gone after the season.
Matthews is a big slot
AcesUp : 3/20/2018 11:21 am : link
At least that's how he was used in Philly, I don't know if that's what we're looking for.

Marshall

has to go. His cap hit is too much and he is done. He looked old and slow last year and I can't imagine after leg surgery that he suddenly is going to get that old quickness and speed back. Plus, he looked pretty indifferent out on the field last year.

Lattimer's a 4th year vet with a career high of 19 catches for 287 yards. I wouldn't write him into any lineup.

I'm not, he's depth or sub package guy. With Engram in the fold, I just don't see the need for a true #2 or X receiver. That's why we drafted him, to move him all over the field. We're also paying a capable player in Ellison starter money, so why not get him on the field more than we have in the past? We're more than okay with a base package of OBJ, Sheppard, Engram, Ellison and RB. Given all the other needs, I'm okay addressing the position with Latimer.
Engram
BillT : 3/20/2018 11:34 am : link
A 6'3" 235 lb receiver with legit WR speed (4.42). As big a matchup nightmare for CBs as LBs. And it gets him away from TE blocking responsibilities that he's not good at and will only get him injured.
Agree with the "Marshall has to go" crowd
FranknWeezer : 3/20/2018 11:34 am : link
Another 2017 attitude adjustment that this team needs in order to move on from that horrible season.

Find a mid-tier FA like Mike Wallace or let the young guys battle it out. King, Lewis, etc.

I like Shepard at slot. I like the TEs, obviously Odell is fine, but we already saw that this group minus Odell wasn't good enough last season. They could certainly stand to get more talented and deeper at WR. You have to be able to manage in the face of injuries. I don't want to bet on a few additions at OL and better playcalling making up all the difference.

This is what not to do. You take away what Shepard does best by moving him outside. Shepard is a slot receiver, he would not be as effective on the boundary.
No real interest in Matthews

see who shakes loose but I think it will be a camp battle that Lattimer should seize.
What was wrong with Marshalls attitude?????
Keith : 3/20/2018 12:15 pm : link
The problem is his cap number, but I'm confused seeing people complain about him personally. All he did was come in and work hard. I prefer to keep him on the squad at a much lower salary. Hoping they rework his deal to a 1-2M cap hit. He's a good compliment to OBJ.

I just checked OVERTHE CAP site and Marshalls dead money before or after June 1st does not change. It is still $1m dead money. He is schedule with bonus to receive 6.1 and some change this year. The 6th highest paid player in league right behind Odell. Thats sad. However if we cut him before or after we save $5.1m and some change.

Probably Draft a WR
Samiam : 3/20/2018 12:20 pm : link
I’m thinking they draft someone round 3 or 4. I agree with Aces that there’s no need to spend big on the outside WR given who Eli can throw to now, The fly in the ointment is Beckham’s future contract. They need a good young guy as Insurance in case the unthinkable happens.
I've read on here from a few people that Marshall hasn't been

Cam Meredith's injury was gruesome. If he's expected to make a full recovery, I'd like that idea. That was nasty, though.

recently, but not having a guy to take the top off the D severely hampers OBJ's ability to do his best work. They really need to consider that when planning for this year. Lewis struggled getting separation. Powe might end up being a red zone option, but we need additional speed and separation ability at the other spot.

If we were to trade back ,WR I might target with an additional 2nd round pick might include:

Plus Minus
James Washington-deep ball skills route running,
speed

Micheal Gallup hands, size, route running speed?

Cain, Deon size ok, route running, speed hands

Chark, DJ height, speed press coverage

Kirk, Christian quick, hands more slot

Miller, Anthony quick, RR, deep ball quick>fast, drops

Moore, DJ Productive,"stefan Diggs"hands +/-, quick>fast

Pettis, Dante hands,route speed, ?strength

Ridley, Calvin speed, routes size, drops

St Brown, Equanimeous tall, subtle speed hands,
unpolished?

Sutton, Courtland size, possession skills speed, RR

admittedly, I have seen none on tape, and have no real opinion. kinda like description of Pettis, and fits our need some- and should be a day 2-3 pick.

and bloodline?

Dad is Gary Pettis.

Cedrick Wilson, Boise State.
Tre'Quan Smith, UCF

Wilson has good size (6'2"), big hands, pretty athletic, decent speed (4.55 40).

Tre'Quan Smith also with good size at 6'2", really good deep speed (4.49 40 but I think he plays faster than he times), good vertical and broad at 37.5 and 10'10". I really like him in the 4th round if he's there. He's my preference over Wilson.
