R.J. White: Bills/Giants/Niners proposal/rationale

DanMetroMan : 3/20/2018 12:32 pm
2. Buffalo Bills (NYG mock trade)
Sam Darnold, QB, USC. The Bills are almost certainly not done moving up, and with the familiarity between the Bills and Giants' front offices (both Carolina alums), this fit makes too much sense, particularly with the AFC East rival Jets now at No. 3. Thanks to that Jets-Colts trade, in which the Colts received excellent value for their pick, the Bills will likely have to overpay to get to No. 2. My mock trade has them giving up No. 12, 22, 56 and a 2019 first-round pick for No. 2 and a 2018 Day 3 pick.

9. New York Giants (SF mock trade)
Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma. If the 49ers have a shot at a guy like Chubb, Nelson or James, I think they keep this pick. But with all off the board, they move down with the Giants, who jump ahead of the Dolphins to get their QB of the future in Mayfield, a guy they've scouted heavily. In this mock trade, I have the Giants surrendering the second-rounder they got from Buffalo (No. 56), while also receiving San Francisco's original third-rounder (No. 74). That's a valuable move up for John Lynch, who then has three picks in the top 60.

22. New York Giants (BUF mock trade)
Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville. The Giants picked up this selection by moving down from No. 2 in a trade with the Bills, and after getting a quarterback earlier in this draft, they address their cornerback need with Alexander, who had a fantastic combine to boost his draft stock. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is gone and Eli Apple's future isn't on solid ground, so adding talent at the position makes a lot of sense.

34. New York Giants
Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon. Crosby gives the team competition for Ereck Flowers on the right side of the line

We're drafting at 34

"for competition for Flowers on the right side?"

Baker Mayfield. At 9.

And a corner.

All right then.
This I can see
yankeeslover : 3/20/2018 12:38 pm : link
Grab either Mayfield or Jackson. Still come away with multiple picks and a possible franchise QB. If he fails then it's a easier blow then failing with #2
If the Giants could trade back

Pick up picks and still get Mayfield, who I think is the guy I want anyways, that would be something. But I can’t imagine he gets by Denver.

proposal.
I also don't see Mayfield making it to 9

Could do a whole lot worse than that.
Brown Recluse : 3/20/2018 12:44 pm : link
They do need more cornerbacks and offensive linemen.

And I'm not a fan of Mayfield, but I can't deny the thought of him working with Shurmur is interesting. I think he's a cocky little shit, but who are we kidding? As fans, we're going to root for whoever puts on a Giants jersey.
Why would the 9ers do that
figgy2989 : 3/20/2018 12:48 pm : link
Move down three spots to get a second, but also have to give up a third?
Much better idea
Metnut : 3/20/2018 12:50 pm : link
that drafting an RB at number 2. We'd still have extra picks left over under this scenario. I think Mayfield is the best QB in this draft. Doubt he lasts to #9 though.
Well, that would get me to throw the remote..

Everybody is trying to get cute with their mocks.
Mayfield is not going to sit for 2 years

A shot at Darnold
JonC : 3/20/2018 12:52 pm : link
is precisely why I want to stay at #2. If he's gone, so be it then look to trade down if you must.
Don't love the picks.
idiotsavant : 3/20/2018 12:53 pm : link
In my view you want 'best player of a type' in every round. Or something close.

I agree. If we pass on Darnold I’ll be very annoyed.
Don't like it at all.....

don't want any part of Mayfield. And if the rest of it is the best we could do with a trade down, I don't like it one bit.
This is silly
Rudy5757 : 3/20/2018 1:07 pm : link
If the QB you want is Mayfield you take him at 2 and don't risk losing him. If you truly think he is the best QB why play games? Nobody will question the pick if he turns out to be a great QB.

The Giants could have picked Rothlesberger back in 2004 but they wanted Eli and gave up a lot to get him but it paid off. If there is a guy you want you take him otherwise you become the Browns thinking you can trade back and still get the best QB. It hasn't worked for them. GB didn't trade back for Rodgers, he fell into their laps. Sometimes you get lucky and they fall but it looks like there will be a run on QBs and the worst we can do this year is the 2nd best.
Glad to see a mock adhering to Occams Razor

Why get so complicated.

Trade our #2 pick to Denver for their #5 and their first round pick next year.We should wind up with Barkley or Nelson.
Also, if Webb doesn't pan out, we have 2 first round picks to get a quality QB next year.
Here's your trade down if the Giants love Barkley....
kinard : 3/20/2018 1:53 pm : link
... Bills are QB and desperate and have been trying to deal their way to the top of the draft. New Bills GM is one of Gettleman's best buddies - Brandon Beane. Get Bean to make a deal with the Browns (who may love Barkley but know Giants will pick him at #2)to get into the 4 spot and then give us a nice pick or two (their 2019 first or second) to move up two spots to #2.

Three QBs get picked in a row at the top of the draft, Bills get to pick their future QB instead of letting Jets pick their guy and Giants still get Barkley at #4 plus an extra pick or two.

THat's my dream scenario. But, I don't think buddies just give picks to each other. You need the Bills to fear the Jets.
You might be able to play the Bills and Jets
Bill L : 3/20/2018 1:56 pm : link
against each other.
I don't think that
allstarjim : 3/20/2018 1:58 pm : link
the Browns taking Barkley at 4 is a given. I think they could pass on him for Chubb, Nelson, or Minkah.

Therefore, my ideal scenario is to trade down with Denver and still get Barkley, plus picks this year and a 2019 first. That to me is the dream.
Down to 4 but now down to 5 is
idiotsavant : 3/20/2018 2:20 pm : link
More doable. Correct? Soap opera of this started to bore me.
Only if the Giants know for sure that Cleveland...
kinard : 3/20/2018 2:24 pm : link
.... isn't taking Barkley or won't trade that pick to some team who will take Barkley. Would hate to be sitting at 5 with three QBs and Barkley off the board.
I have no comment on the trade...

don't think Mayfield will last until #9. I'd be stunned if the Giants drafted him. He has character concerns, and doesn't meet their size requirements.

They got away with it, Big Ben is better and we wouldn't have had to give up all the picks.

2019 is a weak QB class, and simply having "2 first round picks" does not necessarily mean you can move up as high as #2 to get get the best QB in the class. We're picking #2, THIS YEAR, in a QB-heavy class. If our guy is there, we take him, End of Story. If we don't like any of the QBs more than Webb, draft Barkley or trade down to #5 or #6 and take Nelson/Chubb.
If your plan is to take a QB
ajr2456 : 3/20/2018 6:34 pm : link
Take the better one at 2.

There's also no guarantee Mayfield lasts til 9.
