Definite upgrade on the bench at worst. Amazing what happens when a kid plays poorly when 1st brought up and the following year turns it around. Hope Wade keeps it going.
yep. and he's another versatile, athletic player. Â
He's the most suitable backup at SS defensively, and he's the emergency third catcher. But I don't think he'll play much, and it's nice to see that Wade made the team.
a bit worried that besides Sanchez and Wade most of the starters are a bit underwhelming? I suppose Didi is ok, but most are about at the Mendoza line. Poor ST pitching you can easily explain by them working on command of a new pitch or adding a new pitch, but hitting is hitting.

Would hate to see them start out cold in April.
Mindless concern?
I'd ask the same question around mid-May 1st. Until then, not a big concern.
Admirable how Wade came to camp and won a roster spot Â
The story of Pujols tutoring him in the offseason is pretty cool
Torreyes has had a good spring too...but agree his days are likely numbered.
I think if Boone goes with 13 position players on the roster, the bench to start is Romine, Wade/Walker (whoever doesn’t start), Austin, Torreyes.
Ellsbury probably bumps one of them when he’s ready and Frazier will push if he can get right after his concussion, but that bench still gives the Yanks good depth at most positions.
Plus, the Yanks rarely played an actual starting lineup this spring. I think things will look different to pitchers once they're facing Judge-Stanton-Sanchez in a row (or with Bird in there too). Plus, this is the best 7-8-9 we'll have had in a while. Hicks, Drury, Walker, Wade would bat higher than 7-8-9 in most lineups. Color me unworried, at least for now ...
... or something like that. I know Girardi would never bat Bird and Didi next to each other but I don't think Boone is going to care so much about that.

What's the old saying, Ignore March and ignore September call ups in meaningless games? I wouldn't be too concerned
I just think Sanchez is the best hitter on the team and batting him third makes sense. Like getting Judge extra ABs by batting him #2 because his OBP is so high.
I agree scetion. Sanchez is almost being ignored with all that Â

Thing is, it really looks like the Yanks MUST add 13 pitchers to start the season. They are having a really rough time stretching out their SP. They did get 5 out of Severino the other day- but that's about it.
While they COULD use the SWB shuttle for a few weeks to try and cover the extra innings, the math says that they will need that extra arm at least for the first 3 weeks until their starters start throwing 6-7 regularly.
IMO, Boone's biggest test in April is going to be avoiding burning out his bullpen through overuse.
I think that there are 24 clear spots on the roster- but the 25th is down to Torreyes or a reliever. My money is on the Yanks going with the reliever.

Good point - and there aren’t as many off days early on as it usually seems in April. They open with 5 in a row, and have 3 off days in April by my count.
They also end April with 8 straight at home, followed by a 7 day trip to Anaheim and Houston with no travel day. That’s a lot of games early and a lot of pressure on the rotation.

Heard somewhere that Adrian Beltre had one hit last spring training and hit over 300 in April.
Austin sent down today, along with Heller and McKinney Â
and Boone said Torreyes will be the emergency catcher...which sounds like they’re keeping him on the roster.
Yanks went with another possible opening day lineup version and beat the Orioles 9-4 tonight...not sure I like hitting Sanchez 5th but this looks pretty deadly:

getting sent down...that means that Ellsbury's roster spot, while on DL, will be going to a pitcher. Which makes sense as there would be no at-bats for Austin or McKinney. Walker will spot Bird. And Stanton will spot corners. Wade can play OF if needed too.
Final roster spot looks to be down to German or Holder. Depends if they want a long man or regular reliever. Cessa is still an option as a long man over German, but would have to think German has leg up there. I think they go Holder. I would think German and Cessa are better off down in AAA as starters in event we need them if a starter goes down, compared to pitching mop up innings sporadically in the bigs.
Would hate to see them start out cold in April.

Yup, I think El Gary will contend for the MVP this year barring injuries

Judge 2-3, 2 HR, 2 BB, 4 R, 4 RBI. I’d say he’s ready for the season.

No surprise on Torreyes.
That lineup makes some sense if Bird is hot; if not, go with Gary 3d.

Holder has looked good, but I prefer Heller.
