CB and OBJ

Painless62 : 3/21/2018 9:18 am
Assume we take QB at 2. Even with cuts that can be made to free up cap room, how do we sign OBJ long term , improve the OL, get a RB and have enough CBs. We would have no cap room to sign one of the few competent CBs left. With signing OBJ and only 4 draft picks, what is the solution? Get torched for 400 yards weekly? I don’t think DG is planning on not trying to win this year. This is why both signing OBJ long term AND taking a QB seem like they both can’t happen. I should say taking a QB at pick 2. How would everyone feel if they took a QB at 2, but traded OBJ for 2 picks and signed a corner like Gaines and a veteran WR?

I never questioned OBJ talent. I just don't think
he is as important as a QB. And if I had a choice
I'd take Plaxico over him. Just remind Plaxico,

OBJ is under contract

let it play out and then franchise him... like the Steelers with LeVeon Bell
Eli, who makes a ton,

can come off the books as early as next year. We have some other big contracts that are coming off or can come off in the next few seasons. It's easy to manipulate OBJ's cap hit to accelerate when other money is coming off.
I am not opposed to trading any player
Pep22 : 3/21/2018 9:31 am : link
but I'd need quite a haul for OBJ.

Example: In the case CLE drafted Darnold at 1, trade them OBJ for the 4, 33 and 35 and Corey Coleman. Walk out of the draft with:

2 QB Josh Rosen
4 RB Saquon Barkley
33 WR DJ Moore
34 OG/C Billy Price
35 CB Carlton Davis
66 OG Braden Smith
102 S Terrell Edmunds
139 WR Daeshon Hamilton

OBJ contract is currently doable

Even with the signings, there is ample Cap space in each of the next few years, plus Eli's big salary will most likely be coming off the books within the next couple of years

Keith what's the CAP hit if we let him go in 2018.

Brown Hornet made a good point on this thread, we've
paid 5 million roster bonus to Eli.
But, if the DG regime wants to go QB, would they have
signed Eli iregardless.

I like that trade except I don’t think Browns give up Coleman. I’d rather have Peppers to join him up
With Collins

Browns Wr Corp. 4 set. OBJ. Coleman Landry and Gordon would give opposing DCs a nightmare

Pete, I'd rather have LeVeon Bell than OBJ.
OB is an annoying immature personality at times
JonC : 3/21/2018 10:00 am : link
but Giants fans who want to trade him massively underrate his value on the field as an impact football player. It's mind-boggling. The likelihood you get remotely near equal value in trade is really low, even if you plug a few roster holes afterwards it's all just on paper.

NYG is clearly looking value route at CB, at this point in time.

It really is stupid, people want to trade Beckham for picks and hope one of those picks become Beckham and then will want to trade that player when his contract is up...

You don't trade one of the best players in the league
I think fans are spoiled by what he does on the field
JonC : 3/21/2018 10:17 am : link
which painfully few other WRs can duplicate at this level.

He's heading to the HoF if he stays healthy and productive, he's that good.
Not Playing

If OBJ doesn't get a new contract he will sit. What is the rule for him getting credit for the year? Report by game 10? What we don't need is him sitting, not helping on the field and being a huge distraction. Again, any long term deal with a signing bonus will be more than we can bear this year. Reshaping our offense with multiple cost controlled pieces instead of OBJ, a talented but problematic and sometimes inconsistent receiver, might be the way to go.I am in the camp that the offense can't be consistent if your primary target is a wide receiver.
I would never
Doomster : 3/21/2018 10:57 am : link
sign OBj to long term qb money.....you franchise him.....and then you do it again if he plays up to the franchise tag.....if he doesn't then you trade him...I'd rather take a one year hit, than a multiyear one...

The only concern is, players don't like one year contracts....they want their "guarantee" money......this could exacerbate OBj's thought processes.....

I used the big word in honor of Klaatu's return....
Isn't the premise of this post fatally flawed?

A quarterback drafted 2nd overall doesn't get paid more than a guard drafted second and hasn't since the new CBA.
Not my Point
Painless62 : 3/21/2018 12:28 pm : link
I was trying to lay out options. If we don’t trade down, somehow sign OBJ, all we are left with is the draft and the post June 1 cuts. I don’t see how we fill out a roster with no money and only 4 other draft picks. If DG is all in on Eli, how does that work? Only option is to trade down and get extra picks ASAP. I am really of the belief draft the QB, unless Shurmur says he TRULY believes Webb has a good future and he doesn’t see much difference between him and the draft QBs. This is a case of trusting the pros. They want to win now AND build for the future, same as us fans. In today’s NFL, with good coaching and drafting, it is possible.
I seriously believe that if LT was playing today
GiantFilthy : 3/21/2018 12:31 pm : link
there would be fans willing to trade him for picks to avoid the contract and/or headache.
I don't think OBJ gets a deal this off-season
ZogZerg : 3/21/2018 12:32 pm : link
Bur, Drafting a QB would seem to help pay OBJ in the future.
