NFT: Knicks: Horny a likely goner?

DanMetroMan : 3/21/2018 12:10 pm
Jeff Hornacek has one year left on his contract, but good luck finding league observers who believe he will survive to see it out.

The former Knicks guard Mark Jackson keeps coming up as a hot name to succeed Hornacek, amid a growing belief the Knicks' new front-office chief - Scott Perry - will want to install his own hand-picked choice heading into next season.

It's difficult to fault Hornacek for much of the chaos that has engulfed the Knicks during his two seasons in charge. But there's no avoiding the fact he was a Phil Jackson selection, which could well doom him now that the organization seems intent on cutting every non-Porzingian tie to the Phil era as possible.

Another name to file away here: The former Cleveland coach David Blatt has a longstanding relationship with the Knicks' president Steve Mills dating to their days as Princeton teammates. You wonder if that'll finally earn Blatt his first meaningful look from an N.B.A. franchise since the Cavaliers fired him in January 2016 while sporting a record of 30-11.

I agree

I don't see what MJax provides and hate it when guys get hired for front office or coaching spots because (in part) they have a playing history w the team
Mark Jackson and Dolan?
arniefez : 3/21/2018 12:23 pm : link
Now that would be entertaining.
If the Knicks could
Earl the goat : 3/21/2018 12:40 pm : link
Trade Lee and Thomas. If Kanter opts out then they can clear enough cap room for Julius Randle for a max contract
I think he would be the perfect front court mate next to KP
Drafting Mikal Bridges and then the Knicks have a nice young front court to grow together

Horny definitely gone. Id be a fan of Blatt if hes picked
Blatt

is a very good coach. Also, wasn't Doc Rivers rumored to be interested?
Blatt would be fine by me

Frank hattaway bridges Randle kp? Not bad
Agreed about Jackson. I want no part of him.
bceagle05 : 3/21/2018 12:59 pm : link
There are plenty of reasons he hasn't sniffed a job since leaving Golden State off a 50-win season.

I hope this purging of the Phil era doesn't include dealing Frank - he has a big role here, especially if we add a Sexton or SGA in the draft.
I think they need to look

outside the box and not hire another NBA retread coach. I'd like an up and coming assistant or college coach. Kevin Willard of Seton Hall comes to mind.
I can't point

to a single thing that I can say Hornacek did well here. Best thing I can say is that he had them playing league average defense for much of the season until the wheels came off. Woo-hoo! Yet another great move by Phil....

Bucks will match Parker. They love him
Thats coming from the owner Marc Lasry
If they hire Mark Jackson then this FO isnt as smart
PhiPsi125 : 3/21/2018 2:26 pm : link
as we all hoped that they are. Theres too much noise around Jackson to look at him as a serious candidate for a rebuilding team.

how the Phil Jackson legacy continues to grow.......

It's truly amazing how it all unfolded. Phil went from the godly NBA figure that was going to bring the Knicks back relevance only to turn into an absolute joke. Only on the Knicks can one of the most prominent figures in the NBA with 11 rings be turned into a laughing stock.

eh, Phil's lack of success as an exec was first guessed by many. He had zero direct experience building a roster, running a draft, executing trades, negotiating contracts, or managing the cap. And then he compounded that by agreeing to retain Mills, an empty suit who's even more unqualified than him, in a prominent role.
Other than KP the one thing Phil did that was good
steve in ky : 3/21/2018 3:57 pm : link
It took his personality and level of respect to get Dolan to remove himself from getting to involved in many of the basketball decisions. It appears that for the most part leaves it to the basketball people to run things. If he did nothing else that may end being his best legacy in helping the organization.

you're right Enzo. Me included. He had Jerry West and Jerry Krause doing all that. He only had to coach stacked rosters. It's a different skill set that very few make the transition to from coach to successful executive.
Enes Kanter at $18M
TheVette : 3/21/2018 5:04 pm : link
...pass. He's proven to be just good enough to lose with. Team needs to continue to draft in in the top 10, and figure out a way to lure a few stars to jump start this franchise. Spending $18M/yr on Enes Kanter is not gonna cut it. Just like $18M on Noah and $18M on THJ (see a pattern here?)

Go out and hire a coach who can actually lure REAL talent, else this team will continue to go no where fast

Think Rick Pitino should be the coach
One of the best coaches in history of college basketball
Aside from the past scandal I think it would be a home run for the Knicks

Other than one season early on with the Knicks he never was very successful coaching at the NBA level. Not sure he would be a great option for this team at this time.

Here's a fun Ben Simmons stat:

If he played for:

IND
TOR
NYK
LAC
MEM
ATL
MIA
CHA
UTA
ORL

...he would already be the franchise leader in triple-doubles.

But didnt give Noah that deal Id be fine with his tenure. His unprofessional rants on Twitter were bad but didnt really harm the franchise long term and I cant kill him for missing on a few trades or second round picks. KP draft was a boon. I just wish we could take back that Noah deal. Oh well... just pray the new regime doesnt do anything stupid and they need to hit some doubles in the next two drafts if they dont hit hrs. Then they need to sign the lucky fa or two in 2019.
Agree that the Noah deal overwhelms everything.
bceagle05 : 3/21/2018 7:58 pm : link
Lance was bad too, but not crippling in any way. Lee was fine, O'Quinn was fine, Rose trade was an OK gamble, and obviously KP was great. We'll see about Frank. Everything else is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

2 years let alone 4 years and certainly not at 18 million a year. The NY Dolan's replaced that guy with a guy who gave Hardaway Jr 71 million. If it was fiction no one would believe it.
Hornacek said the other day
bceagle05 : 3/21/2018 9:05 pm : link
that Timmy, Kanter and Lance are the three guys who show a "winning mentality" on a nightly basis. Timmy and Kanter don't play a bit of defense. What a ridiculous comment.
Down 99-77 at the end of the third.
bceagle05 : 3/21/2018 9:14 pm : link
Frank has played seven fucking minutes. Fuck Hornacek.
Timmy plays some defense
djm : 3/21/2018 9:15 pm : link
As long as hes playing I can live with him. The injury not only sucked for those games he missed but it took him a while to regain consistency. He is not a bad player when going well.
I love when people RIP hardaway
nygiants16 : 3/21/2018 9:22 pm : link
He is averaging 18 4 and 3, he was playing very well and so was the team and then he got hurt, he was playing very well as the 2nd guy to porzingis...

I don't think it is coincidence that Porzingis started to struggle when hardaway went out...
I do not mind
TommyWiseau : 3/21/2018 9:42 pm : link
Hardaway at all, he is a pretty decent 2. Not great but not bad by any stretch. As for Kanter, I love the guy but not at 18 per. Maybe at 12 per which he will never go for

He won't see $12 per. More like sub $10. Don't want him on a multi year deal. Doesn't make sense in NY.
I don't realy follow the NBA that closely anymore, especially since

New York ceased having an NBA franchise, so my question is: what did Mark Jackson do that he is considered a problem by so many people? His record seems to be pretty good on the surface.
Whether you like Hardaway or you don't
arniefez : 3/22/2018 10:29 am : link
Whether he's playing defense or he isn't is not the point. The point is once again the NY Dolan's gave a player a contract at a price no other team in the NBA would EVER consider. It's what Dolan does and it's why there's no hope and there will never be any hope as long as he's alive.

Considering the deals older vet SGs have gotten (Bazemore, Eric Gordon, Fournier), THJR's deal isn't that bad. If anything, Lee's deal is becoming a burden as he has no long term future and teams aren't desparate to trade for average vets with a hot buyout market each year.
Tim Hardaway is the 16th highest paid SG in the NBA.
