defensive line questions/ 3-4 scheme questions

Andy in Boston : 3/22/2018 10:55 am
I'll admit, I'm not as knowledgeable on 3-4 schemes.

I don't see a huge difference in size or scheme adaptability with Chubb and JPP. Is Chubb an Outside LB in a 3-4 scheme?

Aren't 3-4 DE's (5 techniques) big power DE's? Like 6'6 300 lb types?

In any case, I'm thinking the Giants draft at least 2 defensive lineman.

Thoughts?
The idea of the 3-4 has changed a bit from the last time it was played

here. There are different variations of it, and different types of 3-4 DEs. There is no one single 3-4 defense with easily defined position 'prototypes'.

One flavor of the 3-4 wants big space-eating ends. Others, like for example the one Wade Phillips coaches, relies on more athletic ends because his scheme calls for more pass rush expectations from the ends as well as the LBs.
I would be more concerned who plays in the middle, is there another

Vince Wollfork out there?

Bettcher runs a 1 gap attacking defense. Those are typically your more disruptive players. Snacks and Tomlinson can make the fit. Martin played down and stood up with Arizona. There were times Bettcher ran a DL that had only 2 down and Martin was the 5. He would stunt and blitz behind it while blitzing Chandler Jones (and sometimes the Honey Badger with him) on the opposite side.

The problem with Chubb as OLB is he's stiff in his hips, his 3 cone also showed some of his limitations. He's better as a base 43 end. Power rusher type. If OV is playing the Joker/Elephant I don't know if Chubb is an ideal fit on the other side.

Kinda the problem we had with JPP and why a lot of us were confused to what his role would be.

Snacks played NT with the jets.

A good two-gap 320+ NT is even rarer than a 3 down 4-3 RE, nowadays most teams mitigate this by playing more one gap and hybrids.
Just looked at Cardinals 2018 depth chart
EddieNYG : 3/22/2018 1:58 pm : link
There linebackers are as follows:

SAM - Chandler Jones 6'5 265
SILB - Deone Buchanan 6'1 211
MILB - Karlos Dansby 6'3 250 (2018 UFA)
WLB - Haason Reddick 6'1 237

That could give us a good idea of the kind of players the Giants are looking for at LBer, if the scheme is going to be the same as the Cardinals scheme.

SAM - Olivier Vernon 6'2 261
SILB - Alec Ogletree 6'3 232
MILB - BJ Goodson 6'1 243
WLB - Unknown at this point

Am I right, or wrong with where I slotted them?

Maybe the Giants are looking for a Haason Reddick type LBer to be the OLBer opposite of Vernon?

Kareem Martin will be SAM

Not Olivier Vernon. SAM in Arizona's defense is a 2-gap position that must hold the edge. So the LB must be very stout. Kareem Martin is huge for a LB. Olivier Vernon will be the other OLB that is typically the pass-rush specialist.
ok should be correct

This is a very good explanation of the situation.

Bechers two Front?

Snacks and Vita Vea.

2 varied "OLB/DE types" (OV, Mauro/Wynn, add a draft pick)

1 LB (Ogletree or Collins)

3 safeties (Collins, Thompson, Adams and / or draft pick)

3 corners
Check that
idiotsavant : 3/22/2018 2:55 pm : link
Mauro 6'6" 282lbs
Martin 6'6" 272lbs

So I guess Mauro is a pass downs front 3 unit player and Martin an OLB that can run blitz and go to line etc? Attack.
