Just talked to JPP, who said Dave Gettleman called to tell him he’d been traded to Bucs. JPP said DG told him it was “an offer they couldn’t refuse.” JPP said he is happy he’ll be closer to his son, who lives in S Florida. #NYG

JPP also told me: “Thank you to the Giants for the 8 years I spent there. They’re making changes; I understand that. Thank you to fans that supported me, and thanks for the great Super Bowl run that we had.” NYG

More JPP to me: He said he was surprised not to hear from #NYG until after trade was done. “At the end of the day, it’s a business. I know that.” He added before we hung up: “Tell everyone at the Giants that I wish them the best.”

When I asked JPP about playing for Tampa Bay, he mentioned going back to where he played college ball (South Florida) and emphasized significance of being closer to his son, little JPP. #NYG

A 3rd round pick for a veteran on a big contract who hasn't been productive is a strong return. Not sure what more you could ask for.

the 3rd is a fair trade the 4th flip-flop was some icing ... but it leads me to believe the upcoming contracts talks are in a better place than we might think and this just get them wrapped up and done with .... Collins & OBJ

Also we need a try #2 WR and another starting CB ....
Would have liked...

he was never consistent and outside of 2011, his sack numbers were lousy and seemed to only come against weak opponents or when we were out of the race.

After the fireworks incident, well, he was still a good run defender but that's all. Plus, he was an injury waiting to happen.

Thanks for 2011 but not much since really. Certainly, the contract he was given was ridiculous.

All I can say is DG is totally reshaping this team. I don't think he's done doing that.

He was much better than "solid" in 2011. He was a DPOY caliber player. He never really touched that peak again, though.

Lets see

2010- Bench player, so pass
2011- all star year
2012- meh
2013 - awful
2014 - got a lot of sacks in junk time, didn't make much of a difference
2015 - Pretty bad lineman he was next to...not hard to top Kerry Wynn (even with one hand)
2016 - Ok year along side a healthy Snacks and Vernon
2017 - did he even play?

So out of all that id say mediocre is way too nice

Its really not that far off. He was very disruptive early in his career but he just doesn't have it anymore. Whether its a physical thing (conditioning, fingers, etc) or desire...or a combination of both...JPP has not been a great defensive end in a long time.

you're right. He was disruptive when offenses had to account for Tuck, who at his best forced double teams and still made plays. And they had Canty and LJ. JPP never became the disruptive force a la Tuck that they/we were hoping for. He never developed the technique to go along with his athelticism. The hand just made it more difficult for him physically.

Of course we do. It's what we do when it comes to certain players and upper management guys who contributed to Super Bowl seasons... as opposed to other guys who if you dare speak a bad word about them you get attacked like you just talked about their momma.

That's the point people seem to be brushing past. It was a shit comment to make to dance on the grave of a guy who was a key contributor to a super bowl win. But there are some people here who live for that.

3rd round may be good in this situation but it's hardly an offer you can't refuse and it's definitely not going to sound like an offer you can't refuse to the player. Hey thanks for everything but we couldn't pass up a shot at the 69th best player in the draft. Sounds like Dave hasn't really polished up the people part of the job.

Where was anyone “demanding” class? He’s free to react any way he wants. I for one admire him for showing class, bc we all know he’s taken plenty of grief from fans and the media. I would have understood if he was a little salty about how he was treated too.

Personally, I always respected the hell out of him for the way he worked to come back from the injury (and recall arguing in his defense about it here), but also criticized him for being a no show on the field for extended stretches this season. Which he was....admittedly I don’t know if he was playing hurt a lot, always willing to concede there’s likely more to the story most of us fans don’t know.

The player of course is never going to agree with the idea, but players are usually the last ones to admit when they're not what they used to be.

If there's a question where he fits in what they want to do defensively, and his contract hampers you in future years with critical contracts coming up, and someone offers you a quality asset for that much cap relief, it makes sense every time.

I like JPP a lot and I have a helmet autographed by him on my wall. But if his contract is any kind of speed bump in your plan for the team, it sure is 'can't refuse'. Contracts like this are not easily moved historically.I'm shocked they were able to not just do so, but get something of value.
