Trading down from No. 2 makes most sense NOW

JoeyBigBlue : 3/22/2018 11:27 am
Especially if we get the haul that rumored to be offered by the Bills. With the trading of JPP, this team is now razor thin across the D-Line. We don't have a legitimate pass rusher outside of Vernon. By trading down and acquiring the Bills second 1st round pick and 2 additional second round picks we can shore add guys across both the D-Line and O-Line.

On the O-line we need quality starters at both guard spots, and someone to challenge Jones for the center position. Knowing Gettleman, he builds his teams around the lines, and this trade would give us the best opportunity to build these lines NOW.
They better really, really believe in Davis Webb

need more pass rushers, but if they are going to a more traditional 3-4, then you may be looking at this wrong. (Problem is WE don't really know what the Giants have in mind yet on defense).

But in a 3-4, your pass rush comes from the linebackers. The assumption here was OV and JPP would be the pass rushers. But then the Giants signed Kareem Martin to starter's money... we should have put two and two together right then and there.

Its more imperative than ever to get a low cost QB....half the league is searching for theirs and we are drafting 2nd overall..........
Yeah, no.
Keith : 3/22/2018 11:33 am : link
If you acknowledge that we are rebuilding and you know we have a 37 year old QB that's had 2 bad seasons in a row, why wouldn't you draft the QB that you desperately need? Cmon people.
The big thing this changes with the draft
Beer Man : 3/22/2018 11:34 am : link
Is that the Giants now have 4 options that there are strong arguments for:

1. QB
2. Barkley
3. Chubb
4. Trade back

Its still any ones guess which way the team will go, and the picture just got a bit fuzzier.
Really Depends on What DG Priortizes: QB or BPA?
TheVette : 3/22/2018 11:36 am : link
You have 4 QBs that are being talked about - rank them as you wish, as I know everyone has their favorites, but I do not see any of those 4 showing up as a BPA ahead of Barkley, Nelson, or Chubb.

I'm glad that DG isn't tipping his hand - had enough of teams jumping the Giants for Conklin and Floyd, and instead ending up with Apple because Reese was a leaker.
True.
old man : 3/22/2018 11:36 am : link
In another thread I mentioned the #5 goes 3 QBs, Barkley, we go Chubb? as JPP replacement.
Maybe Nelson? Or Barkley if Browns go X.
The Bills #12 or 22 gives us Vea..a better 3-4 DE.
They have
bigfrank612 : 3/22/2018 11:37 am : link
4 picks in the top 70 already. Trading with Jets (mentioned by PFT), with Denver, or even Bills gives us the opportunity to really control the draft. Something we haven’t been in position to do ever under Reese. I want a QB of the future, I also want Barkley, and I’d love Nelson or Chubb to shore up our Lines. But we can’t have it all lol. DG has to make the move that he thinks is best, and that is deciding if we can win now OR if we have to rebuild completely. I think the trade we make, or Don’t, will give us the answers to where he thinks we are as a franchise.
Gettlemen may not be done making trades with players for picks
wgenesis123 : 3/22/2018 11:37 am : link
or vice versa at this point. We are now back up to six picks and need QB, o-line, cornerback, a pass rusher, another cornerback and have a little more money to spend. Running back could be deemed a need too! If they pass on a QB and trade down they may be able to address all the other needs and net multiple new starters in the draft.
Do we know if Denver or Cleveland are even interested in coming up?
Giantimistic : 3/22/2018 11:38 am : link
We know Buffalo would want our pick, but has there been any indication that Denver or Cleveland would move up--those are the two trades that make the most sense for the Giants to still get a game changing player if not a QB at 2.

I have tried reading Browns and Denver Boards for their asshats but I cannot last very long with their board formats. The show all function on BBI kills all the other forums. I cannot do the read 5 posts and click next for 50 pages.

Eric, do you believe Kareem Martin to be a starter a OLB? I think we can get a nice pass rusher at 12 or 22, plus shore up the O-Line with the additional second round picks.
Just for kicks, if we traded with the Bills
bigbluescot : 3/22/2018 11:39 am : link
I'm not wedded to the idea of picks for picks sake, although I think this draft is pretty deep certainly in positions we need (RB, CB, LB, Interior OL) but lets say we take a 'fair' deal with Bills (this is on the good side of value but probably not as far as we could push it i.e future picks or picking up their other 2nd rounder), we'd end up with something along the lines of

#12
#22
#34
#53
#65
#66
#69

I can't help but think outside of a new franchise QB given our limited depth that's the best potential to really reset the team for the next 4 years. Even if a quarter of those picks didn't pan out you'd be getting 5 good players.

This is how I feel. I really want a young cost effective QB of the future. But being able to trade back and fulfill multiple spots with quality players and making one last run with Eli is also intriguing. God I love the offseason. So many possibilities.
Maybe

If they do that, it makes more sense to take Edmunds than Chubb.
I could see him achieving an even better result

if the Broncos were willing to trade up.

5th overall offers an IMPACT player plus an additional 2nd or 3rd along with their 1st next year.

I've been thinking all along the Browns would go QB at 1 and want Chubb at 4. All the talk of them wanting Barkley is a smokescreen. I see them wanting to pair up Garrett and Chubb and have their D Line core set for years.

I can definitely see them getting antsy now with the JPP trade in thinking the Giants are targeting Chubb, and come calling with some picks to move up to 2.

Razor Thin??
Pep22 : 3/22/2018 11:49 am : link
DE:

OV - above average player
Kareem Martin - starter's $ and clearly, Bettcher likes him (jury is out I suppose)
Josh Mauro - typical rotational, run defending 3/4 DE
Avery Moss - very good size/athlete (intriguing)

Maybe a 4th rounder on somebody like: Duke Ejiofor from Wake?

DT:

Snacks - borderline pro bowler
Tomlinson - very good rookie year
Thomas - solid backup NT type
Giants could trade down in Round 2
GiantJake : 3/22/2018 12:03 pm : link
When the first round ends and teams re-stack their boards, there are always a couple of shocking guys that everyone thought would go on Day 1. If the Giants stay at #2 and take Chubb or Barkley or a QB, they could still pickup an extra pick by dealing back a few spots in the 2nd round. Adding the extra 3rd rounder for JPP will help, but the Giants have holes to fill and adding another pick would help.

Might not be as hard to replace him, as you might think....may not happen this year, could be next year, with a fill in for now....
Other than QB
Beer Man : 3/22/2018 12:12 pm : link
IMO there are 3-guys that could be perennial all-pros - Barkley, Chubb, and Nelson. I think Nelson is the least attractive from where the Giants will be picking, but a QB/Barkley/Chubb are all in play, and I'd be happy with any of them.

Exactly. I think fans are getting caught up too much in the name. He is not nearly effective as he used to be. I don't think he makes a great 34 end or 34 OLB either. His size/skill is best fit for 43 end.
A lot of good pass rushers in this draft including:
AdamBrag : 3/22/2018 12:43 pm : link
Harold Landry, BC
Marcus Davenport, UTSA
Josh Sweat, FSU
Lorenzo Carter, Georgia

and 34 DEs who can get after the passer like:

Taven Bryan, Florida
Rasheem Green, USC
Nathan Shepard, Fort Hayes St.
Andrew Brown, Virginia
I would consider trading down with Denver
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/22/2018 12:48 pm : link

Sure it makes sense..

For me that wouldn't be the case. I stay at 2 and take Rosen. Then I would get aggressive and move back into the 1st with 34 and 69. Targeting an EDGE like Landry or an OT like McGlinchey.
I don’t think jpp trade
djm : 3/22/2018 12:57 pm : link
Impacts their draft day (1) thinking as much as some might think. They likely aren’t trading jpp if he’s that important. Think about it. They trade a guy for a 3rd round pick and then change their outlook for the SECOND overall pick?? Ain’t buying it... sorry.

That Webb got no time last year--for which I blame the coaches and the cowardly owners who made a decision to sit Eli and then backed off in the face of an uproar. So now the new regime has no game tape--at the NFL level--of Webb and a major decision that will impact the future of the franchise coming up in a month.
I'm still not interested in moving that far back.
Torrag : 3/22/2018 12:58 pm : link
I can't envision a realistic scenario where we'd drop back past #5 at this point. Th Bills would have to gut the heart of two Drafts for me to seriously consider such a move.

We're talking both their 2018 1st Rounders/2018 2nd/2019 1st/2019 2nd...and maybe even more. I just don't believe they'll actually offer that much and DG won't settle for less. Nor should he.

Agree 100%. Or Rosen and Guice.
Why Chubb
PaulN : 3/22/2018 3:19 pm : link
He is a 4-3 DE, he is not a 3-4 linebacker. I am not so sure he is a fit for us at all.
Buffalo throws in their 2019 #1
Gothamist : 3/22/2018 3:31 pm : link
Some analysts say this draft is not deep and after Chubb a huge drop off on pass rushers.
How many two way DEs are out there?
I like to offer Hankins a one year $6M deal and add a body to the rotation.
Beats having Bromley in the rotation?
So glad to get rid of JPP’s contract!
Reese’s all in on Dee in 2016, not pursuing Whitworth last year really killed off re-signing Pugh...
I am liking this more and more

I'm not sure you can say we are rebuilding. To me this looks more like a Reload. Of course the Giants aren't going to tip their hand for us.. I'm leaving it up to them. They are the professionals, they know more, not only about the game itself but about the players they have on their roster right now.

Not a lot of solid players, not JAQB especially if there’s no supporting cast. I would rather drop a rookie QB into a great team rather than let him be the island in dross. Unless he’s David Carr, of course.

I've found Mile High Report posts/comments to be informative on the Broncos' situation. No one really knows what Elway will do but you can get a sense of the landscape from the linked post.

As far as fan sentiment, much less obsession with getting a QB than Bills' fans. Recent site poll had two out of three Denver fans not wanting to take a QB at all in the first round. Of the one third that do, many want to stay at #5 and see what shakes out, or only trade up to #4. Small (and vocal) minority do want to trade up to #2, usually for Rosen.

Rosen and Allen are seen as the possible Elway trade up targets; Mayfield someone he might wait for at #5 (or, at most, trade to #4).

Pick 34 is a pass rush hot spot in this draft. Key, Landry, Hubbard, Sweat. 2-3 of those guys could be available there.
