BBI would need extra hampsters if this mock game true!!
Browns grab Barkley at #1
Giants pass on Darnold and Grab Rosen. (YEAH)
Jets Go Mayfield (and pass on Darnold).
Browns get Darnold at #4
LOL
I would love to see this draft happen!!
Charles Davis mock draft 2.0: Darnold slips to Browns at No. 4 - (
New Window )
They know the Jets are taking a QB and there's a strong possibility that the Giants either take a QB or trade the pick so passing on a QB just means they likely miss on their top target (if not top 2 targets).
Conversely, ifwhen the Browns go QB at #1 and QBs are taken at 2 and 3, the Browns will still get the highest rated position player on their board at #4.

What if the Browns have similar grades on Allen, Rosen and Darnold. If they feel confident in all three, then I'd think they would not want to take the chance on losing out on Barkley. Browns can really turn this around especially on offense.

and then selecting a QB at #4 isn't worth the screen its printed on.

I doubt they have equal grades on all 3 and even if they are *close* why would you want to risk getting your lowest rated player at the most critical position?
It's a lock that the Jets are taking a QB and there's certainly at least a 50% chance the #2 pick is a QB either by the Giants or a trade partner. I'd rather risk getting "stuck" with Barkley/Chubb (whichever isn't taken #2) than hoping for either: a) 3+ franchise QBs from this draft and/or b) 2 other teams picking the wrong QBs. Both Chubb and Barkley would be outstanding fits for Cleveland (Chubb is arguably a better with due to positional importance and the addition of Hyde).

I agree. Can you imagine Jimmy Haslam if that happened?..."We haven't had a franchise QB since 1993...NINETEEN NINETY-THREE, AND YOU DRAFT A RUNNING BACK AT #1?"
It's just not happening. There is no way the Browns are going to pick from what's left at #4 when they have their pick of the litter at #1 at QB. They aren't trading down from #1, they aren't trading up from #4, either (though they could trade down from 4).
I think they would drive some Browns fans off the edge if they don't go QB at 1.
1993 guys. Last year of Kosar in a Browns' uni. That's the last time they had a franchise QB. And he only started 6 games for them that year. They are taking a QB, probably Darnold, at #1.
Seems like a tremendous waste of FA capital. For this reason I don't buy it.

I think they knew right away that they were going QB at #1 no matter what.
And I think they assumed Barkley wasn't going to be there at 4, and even if he was, you can't count on that happening. If Barkley were to be there at 4, I think they will value another player as more important to their turnaround and long-term stability than Barkley, because they have no committed some good money to Hyde. But the Hyde signing doesn't mean they wouldn't take Barkley at 4 absolutely. I do think it's a clue, however, to their thinking.
Browns are locked onto Darnold at 1, beyond that and the Jets taking a QB at 3 it's anyones guess.

Is it the Browns are so in love with Barkley at number 1 why did they sign Hyde when they knew they were going to pick Barkley number one overall.

Right to me the Hyde signing is really just a sign that they are not going to be taking the Barkley at number 1 overall.

The only ones that think they're going Barkley at #1 are fans or analysts trying to be different. I'm fairly confident that the other 31 GMs expect them to take a QB at #1. Which QB is up for debate. But they are 100% taking one with the 1st pick in the draft.
Which could certainly explain why Schefter mentioned the Giants trading up to 1. If they don't want Darnold then they can get a pretty penny to still get there guy.
Which is unfortunate because I'd love to see the Giants trade down to #5 (and add Barkley or Chubb), but if the Giants prefer Chubb, then DG's "don't get cute" thinking might result in them staying pat and selecting him at #2.

And if Browns go Darnold #1, I think the Giants will go Barkley unless they trade down.
A Giants trade down is the only way Barkley will be there for them at #4, and even then they could still pass for Nelson, Chubb, Fitzpatrick, or even Derwin James, Ward or Josh Jackson (whoever their top CB is on the board in the case of Ward vs Jackson).
If Giants trade out of 3, then Barkley could still be there at #5, which is why I would like the Giants to really make a trade with Denver. If they don't trade with Denver, but still trade down lower than 5, Denver could still go with Mayfield assuming he's the last of the big 4 still available.
Then, you have the Colts at #6, and I really think they would value Nelson there.
But there is no way that Barkley would get past Tampa at #7. I think in the worst case scenario for Barkley, he doesn't fall past 7.

and the Jets Central passes on him for Mayfield, it would be perfectly clear the Jets are the most clueless team in the NFL.

I think you are right on Darnold. And I think DG may be smart enough to realize that this #2 is too high to waste a pick on a RB.
So it's likely down to a QB or Chubb for Jints Central. If the Jints go QB, I could then see the Browns going Chubb at #4 - because they signed Hyde - to bookend with Garrett. And then Barkley is the unexpected player who falls - to where it gets very interesting...
#2 Giants - Chubb
#3 Jets - Rosen
#4 Browns - Barkley
#2 Giants - Chubb
#3 Jets - Rosen
#4 Browns - Barkley
Jets would take Mayfield over Rosen and Darnold over both. Darnold won't be there. They are worried about Rosen's slight build and 2 concussions already. It would be Mayfield at 3.
#2 Giants - Chubb
#3 Jets - Rosen
#4 Browns - Barkley
This.
