We have seen some interesting moves this week, culminating in the trading of JPP.
I think Gettleman has done a very good job studying where the Giants had been, and where they need to go. I also think it goes beyond just the players. Much has changed, and I think we now have some clues as to how Gettleman is thinking.
We all know that Marc Ross was not replaced by another hire at this time, but rather was "replaced" for this draft with Gettleman himself, along with someone loyal to Gettleman, "consultant" Mark Koncz. Another mostly below the radar move was the promotion of scout Chris Pettit. Pettit has been with the Giants since 1998, and was certainly very well known to Gettleman when they worked together previously with the Giants. Gettleman worked with many of the current Giants scouts before, but it was Pettit that he moved to quickly promote. So in addition to Gettleman, we have a respected "insider" in Pettit and a respected "outsider" in Koncz heavily involved in this years draft. Pettit and Koncz will have different opinions on certain players, but more importantly, they will be 2 guys that Gettleman trusts and respects to rebuild the Giants.
Another change I am seeing is the involvement of all the coaches in roster changes and traveling visits to potential draft picks. Certainly there was some involvement with coaches on prior draft pick decisions, but I see that as largely changed from the Reese/Ross format. We are already seeing free agents signings of players previously coached, and coaches traveling and having dinner with potential draft picks.
I believe Gettleman is now very familiar with last years Giants locker room, and knows that the overall makeup and personality of the locker room needed to change, and dramatically. A large part of that change is going to be bringing in players in which the many new coaches have a strong desire to add. I expect that the Giants roster come Labor Day will have an incredible number of new faces. If you're a position coach, you are going to have an opportunity and stronger voice in picking your players. And these position coaches will live and die with their decisions.
I think that the new coaches are welcoming the opportunity to have a greater say in the roster make-up.
And that leads me to my thoughts on how this draft will unfold. In a nutshell, I don't think that Gettleman will allow the Giants to fall in love with one single player at the top of the draft. This team needs many new players, and what better way to get them then with a lot of draft picks. Think about it-new coaches working with new draft picks that they had a strong voice in selecting.
This is why, on draft night and following the Browns first selection, I see the Giants trading down. How far? I doubt it will be beyond the top ten, and probably not further down than 6, but I think Gettleman will be trading down.
Why 6? Because I see Gettleman making a 3 way trade of draft picks when the Giants are on the clock. I think the other 2 teams will be the Bills and the Colts. The Colts have already shown their interest in more picks, and clearly the Bills need a quarterback. The Bills currently have picks 12, 22, 53, 56, 65, and 96, as well as all their 2019 picks. That's more that enough to properly meet the trade demands of both the Giants and the Colts.
The Giants will end up with the 6th overall pick, plus more top picks-enough so that virtually every Giants position coach will have a very realistic shot to see the Giants draft a player they want for their unit long term-a foundational player to build around and likely a top 100 selection.
Who will the Giants take with the 6th overall pick? The highest player on their draft board that is still available. Could it be a quarterback and Eli's future replacement? Sure, but I think the only thing certain is that the Giants have many needs-and many can be addressed during this draft with additional valuable picks.
Clearly the Giants need new blood. And if I am reading Gettleman right, he plans on doing the rebuilding of the rosters foundation during draft weekend. Think of the 1986 draft and what it did for the Giants-six picks out of the top 73. No, the picks will not all be on defense this year as they were in '86, but what a difference a single draft made in creating those Giants Super Bowl teams. Even look at last season. The Saints improved dramatically with the 4 selections they made with their picks in the top 67.
Thanks for reading-though its just one fans opinion on what Gettleman will do on draft weekend.
+1
Good post.
Most folks here know I've always had a preference for picking up more picks so I hope what you say happens. I'm also on the record as saying I wouldn't trade down until we're on the clock (parameters can be worked out with various teams ahead of time but waiting usually bears fruit).
Go Giants!
I also think that DG is ready forcachaul of picks, I don't know if they will go down past pick 5 with Denver, but I see either Cleveland or Denver swapping places with NYG.
I can see QB's selected picks 1-4 leaving Barkley, Nelson and Chubb there for NYG.
How have you been doing personally?
as to the conclusion you draw, and not to divert from your thesis, but it depends on how the braintrust you point out view the QB position, both who they have and who might be available, at what spots, whether Round 1 or beyond
But I wouldn't disregard the possibility of their QB just being taken at 2 either.
Anything else warremts
I love the fact that the media has them doing something everyday.
Bruce- I am doing well. Thanks
ColHowPepper-never made the '86 connection. Great handle.
Another point worth making is the lack of consensus on who is the top quarterback in the draft. Talk to 4 "experts" and you get 4 different answers. I think that creates more value to our # 2 pick.
And I think Shurmur and Shula have the skill set to successfully coach a wide range of quarterbacks that will be available in this draft.
As always, well done.
Yup, and did you see this?

Thanks,
Agree. Cannot believe how many posters are just poo pooing the QB position. Get the QB. Don’t get cute.

don't know if you saw any interviews of Pettit during the Combine. I heard on it least 3 occasions him discussing the importance of a potential draft pick "showing their intelligence" during the interview process. I think the position coaches will have more say, but it will only be for a player that Gettleman, Koncz, and Pettit have given their blessings.

From the comments in the article
"ust listened to the podcast,,he said nelson is the best gaurd hes seen in 20 years and hes the best and safest play in the draft"
Did Gettleman really say that? Interesting if so
Depth is a big problem for this team. I like that we are bringing in players that the coaches have worked with in the past as it seems like some of these low level signings could fill in as depth or maybe get some quality playing time.
The one thing I really hope is that DG really sees what we have at QB. Eli is on the decline imo and a new QB is needed for 2019. That may be Webb but if they are not sure about him then QB needs to be addressed this season. I think the roster is improved and the coaching is improved so we will not be picking at the top of the draft next year. The top QB will not be in striking distance without a costing a lot of picks. I personally dont know if these QBs are any good this year but I would like to see us do something at the position even if we draft another later round pick. Can't go into next season with the same problem.

"If you can't make plays from the pocket, you will not survive in this league."
To me that means Rosen or Darnold in that order, if they go QB.
Great job and excellent detailed way to present it. And - I hope it happens like this!!
They have ZERO depth and a lot of overpriced, underperforming vets backed up by aging JAGS. The most recent moves Gettelman made took some balls - something prior to the trade of JPP I didn't believe was coming - I thought he was just another conservative Giants GM in the mold of Reece.
Loading up the roster with guys that we can rebuild the OL and DL and build around the young positional players(Odell, Shepard, EE) can be a path to success...if their scouts can get it right...something that Reece couldn't do
1 Cleveland Browns: Had a traveling group that included the team's G.M., head coach and owner travel to LA where they held a private workout with Josh Rosen; then took him to dinner; also went to dinner with Sam Darnold and attended his pro day and held a private workout with him. Held a private workout at Oklahoma with Baker Mayfield and today will attend the pro day of Josh Allen at Wyoming and will hold a private workout with him.
Emerging consensus on what the Browns will do with the #1 pick: Its now pretty much conceded that Cleveland will be taking a QB with the pick, most likely Darnold (the fact that the owner spent the better part of his pro day sitting with his parents may be the most telling tell!) The Browns could then grab one of the top non-QB prospects with the #4 pick and while Saquon Barkley appears to be the fan favorite, we keep hearing that the Browns might actually be leaning toward Bradley Chubb.
2 NY Jets: After moving up to the 3rd pick from the 6th the Jets had both their GM and head coach on the road where they had a private workout with Rosen, attended Darnold's pro day and will be at Allen's today.
Emerging consensus on what the Jets will do with the #3: After making the deal to move up to #3, maybe the biggest lock in the draft is that the Jets will take a QB, their top choice of whoever is left of Darnold, Rosen and Allen. In fact, there are unconfirmed reports that they are still angling to try and move up into the top 2.
3 NY Giants: The Giants actually may have had the biggest contingent on the QB-tour this week including head coach Pat Shumer, QB-coach Mike Shula, asst GM Kevin Abrams, director of college scouting Chris Mara (who may also double as an ownership rep) plus a handful of other scouts. Pretty much like the Browns the Giants held a private workout with Josh Rosen and then took him to dinner; they also went to dinner with Sam Darnold and attended his pro day and held a private workout with him. Held a private workout at Oklahoma with Baker Mayfield and today will attend the pro day of Josh Allen at Wyoming and will hold a private workout with him.
Emerging consensus on what the Giants will do with the 3rd pick: Haven't a clue; wily old Dave Gettleman ain't tipping his hand; but it looks more and more like its going to be Barkley; or it could be Chubb; or Nelson; if they're not waiting for the mother-of-all-trade downs! Makes sense to me.
Have a great weekend everybody. Hope spring is sprunging in your area.
Snow already gone in Norwalk thankfully.
Always appreciate your thoughtful comments.
