Couldn't they pick Barkley at 1?
Then I assume we go Darnold and Jets take Rosen at 3? Leaving Josh Allen at #4 for the Brown's. I would sign up for this in a heartbeat.
Why risk any QB being at 4 when you can take him at 1 Â
Because you're trying to maximize value.
You don't just take the guy without regard to relative value. If you miss, you have alternatives. It's unlikely they only have eyes for one guy.
1. They take their pick of QB's
2. QB
3. QB
4. Barkley
I don;t think the Giants pass on Barkley but if you’re the Browns you take the QB of your choice first then at worst you get to select either Chubb, Fitzpatrick, Nelson or in a bit of a long shot Barkley.
but the Jets almost certainly are. There are rumors that the Jets like Allen, and if true, the Browns would have to take him 1st. They could do that and play chicken, hoping the Giants pick a QB or Chubb, leaving Barkley for CLE.
As I said yesterday, it wouldn't shock me if CLE wanted Chubb. Having Myles Garrett and Chubb as boookends may make Big Ben rethink his decision to come back next year!

Cleveland has Allen and Darnold ranked the same and also want Barkley? They may feel if they take the Giants qb at 1 that the Giants may take Barkley at 2.
So by picking Barkley with #1 they end up with both there qb and Barkley. In Cleveland's eyes the Giants may steal Barkley from them.
Why does everyone think Cleveland wants Barkley? Â
As there are 2 or 3 QBs that are ahead of him. If I am the Browns GM, knowing their recent history of QB misses, Darnold has to be my pick at #1. Allen warts make him a significantly higher risk than Darnold, Rosen, and maybe Mayfield

I thought the Jets like Rosen?
Man for me that would suck: if DG passes on Rosen and my conviction on him is right and he goes on to have a HOF type career....with the Jets.
RE: Why does everyone think Cleveland wants Barkley? Â
The Jets moving up to #3 IMO locked in the top 3 as QBs IMO:
- Everyone knows the Jets are taking a QB. It would be a UMBC vs UVA shock if they did not.
- Therefore, the only way Cleveland can get the QB of their choice and not have the Jets potentially swipe him is to take him at #1.
- Nobody else is going to move up to #1 and the Browns are at #4. The Browns have no incentive to move from #4 because at that pick they can then draft the best non-QB in the draft.
- This makes pick #2 critical. Anyone who wants to move ahead of the Jets to take a QB has to get here at all costs.
If the Browns want Barkley, Chubb, Nelso, Fitzpatrick, etc, they will do it at #4 and get the QB of their choice at #1.
The first 3 picks will almost assuredly be quarterbacks. Even at #2. It's just up in the air right now as to who will be doing the picking at #2.

IMO the Giants are not trading out and are not taking a QB unless theure offered a ridiculous trade. I base this on the appearance of us already turning down the Jets and the Bills

After Darnold's pro day I'd say he's a lock at 1.

Probably because he's the best player in the draft.
That said, I can see them taking Chubb at #4 (they're 100% going QB at #1), especially with Hyde at RB and Duke Johnson as a solid 3rd down back.

Doubtful they have them ranked the same.

I don't think so either. I think they want Chubb to pair on their D Line with Garrett and he's who they've been targeting all along.
