Giants don't have a great 1st round draft track record

giantsFC : 3/23/2018 2:30 pm
I just went looking up their draft Hx for another post. It's pretty depressing.

Based on modern round 1 success, they probably should draft a QB, pass rushing DE/LB or offensive lineman w their first pick.

Makes perfect sense to me...

Thankfully, Giants RARELY get a top-10 pick...
x meadowlander : 3/23/2018 3:49 pm : link
...almost NEVER get a top 5.

Manning was the last one. (Rivers)

Before that? Cedric Jones was a 5 pick.

Giant fans have been blessed with shitty draft position for the better part of the last 3 decades.

I'm actually happy with the general success of the first round in the modern era. Some lemons, like Cedric Jones, but then you get the incredible Beckham pick, the JPP pick... they've done OK.
Probably

this is their 3rd Top 10 pick in 4 years.

FatMan in Charlotte : 3/23/2018 4:09 pm : link
really sure how you came to the conclusion they have a poor record:

2001 - Will Allen (22nd pick)
2002 - Jeremy Shockey(14th)
2003 - William Joseph(25th)
2004 - Rivers/Eli(4th)
2005 - Corey Webster(43rd) - 2nd rounder
2006 - Kiwi (32nd)
2007 - Aaron Ross(20)
2008 - Kenny Phillips (31)
2009 - Hakeem Nicks (29)
2010 - JPP (15th)
2011 - Prince (19th)
2012 - Wilson (32nd)
2013 - Pugh (19th)
2014 - Beckham (12th)
2015 - Flowers (9th)
2016 - Apple (10th)
2017 - Engram (23rd)

Probably can't call anyone on that list a complete bust - especially with Flowers and Apple still having time to turn things around.

All Pro's in Shockey, Eli, JPP and Beckham

Solid starters in Nicks, Phillips, Ross, and Allen.

Calling it "depressing" is one of the more moronic things to say, and on BBI, especially in the offseason - that's fucking hard.

Don't be stupid. That'll never happen.
I went back to 1990 as my cutoff
giantsFC : 3/23/2018 4:15 pm : link
1990 24 Rodney Hampton Running back Georgia [66]
1991 27 Jarrod Bunch Fullback Michigan [67]
1992 14 Derek Brown Tight end Notre Dame [68]
1993 — — — — [69][n]
1994 24 Thomas Lewis Wide receiver Indiana [70]
1995 17 Tyrone Wheatley Running back Michigan [71]
1996 5 Cedric Jones Defensive end Oklahoma [72]
1997 7 Ike Hilliard Wide receiver Florida [73]
1998 24 Shaun Williams Defensive back California–Los Angeles [74]
1999 19 Luke Petitgout Tackle Notre Dame [75]
2000 11 Ron Dayne Running back Wisconsin [76]
2001 22 Will Allen Defensive back Syracuse [77][o]
2002 14 Jeremy Shockey Tight end Miami (Florida) [78][p]
2003 25 William Joseph Defensive tackle Miami (Florida) [79]
2004 4 Philip Rivers Quarterback North Carolina State [80][q]
2005 — — — — [81][q]
2006 32 Mathias Kiwanuka Defensive end Boston College [82][r]
2007 20 Aaron Ross Defensive back Texas [83]
2008 31 Kenny Phillips Defensive back Miami (Florida) [84]
2009 29 Hakeem Nicks Wide receiver North Carolina [85]
2010 15 Jason Pierre-Paul Defensive end South Florida [86]
2011 19 Prince Amukamara Defensive back Nebraska [87]
2012 32 David Wilson Running back Virginia Tech [88]
2013 19 Justin Pugh Tackle Syracuse [89]
2014 12 Odell Beckham Jr. Wide receiver Louisiana State [90]
2015 9 Ereck Flowers Tackle Miami (Florida) [91]
2016 10 Eli Apple Cornerback Ohio State [92]
2017 23 Evan Engram Tight end Mississippi

There were a lot of bad picks. More success with QB's Pass rushers and lineman...like I said.

I loved me some Rodney Hampton/Jarod Bunch era, but Their track record for RB's is atrocious. WR was hit and miss too. DB's have always finished below expectations.

Not a great record. Busting on a first round pick so often often sets the team back as a whole right?
DB's..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/23/2018 4:21 pm : link
finished below expectations??

Their DB's have been:
- Kenny Phillips
- Aaron Ross
- Prince
- Will Allen
- Shaun Williams
- Apple

All solid starters with the exception of Apple and it is too early to make a call on him.
Let me put it this way...

Jarod Bunch: injury bust
Derek Brown: super bust
Thomas Lewis: bust
Ty Wheatley: bust
Cedric Jones: bust
Ike Hillard: complimentary piece, = 1st round bust
Shaun Williams: injury bust
Ron Dayne: bust
William Joseph: bust
Mathias Kiwinuka: complimentary piece = 1st round bust
Aaron Ross: complimentary piece = 1st round bust
Kenny Phillips: injury bust
Hakeem Nicks: injury bust
Prince Amukamura: maybe a complimentary piece but mostly bust & injury bust
David Wilson bust & injury bust for sure
Erek Flowers: maybe complimentary piece but mostly bust
Eli Apple: bust (TBA maybe he finds jesus this year but he looked lost even before the drama)

You actually called our 1st round draft rate as depressing, despite the fact the giants have hit on more first rounders than most teams. Not by my metrics, but by most analysts.

I only know of grades for players since 2000 (not 1990), but the Giants were ranked 7th for the 1st rounders. They actually were graded 29th for rounds 3-7 butr that wasn't your point.

That's depressing.

injuries
Thegratefulhead : 3/23/2018 5:00 pm : link
Can't really count them as a bust unless there was injury history we ignored. I am not FMIC biggest fan but he is spot on here. We actually have done well in first rounds.
This isn’t really my argument
Bill L : 3/23/2018 5:02 pm : link
But I don’t think many (normal) people would call a person with an injury a bust. I mean I wouldn’t. I consider a bust to be someone who didn’t perform either per their draft pick or even as an nfl player. It, that’s based on performance. If a guy gets injured and his career derailed, I wouldn’t say that’s a bust. It’s unfortunate, yeah but bust isn’t right.

And, if you’re using injury as a debate point to prove that the team cannot draft well, then I think that’s pretty asinine.
I'm not using injury as the debate
giantsFC : 3/23/2018 5:06 pm : link
because being drafted 1st round and not reaching expectations for ANY reason is bust to majority of people.

I wouldn't have posted the thread if I didn't go and look at all the fails.

no i agree about that. trust me when i know about injuries and it's not anyone's fault but luck and genetics.

but it's still a bust for a 1st round pick. they didn't reach the level of franchise worth that that pick is valued at.

you can then also argue that many guys weren't busts because they dealt with mental illness and substance abuse issues.

... the necessary points.

...although I am wondering how Justin Pugh (who I always liked) escaped being labeled a "complimentary piece = 1st round injury bust" (such a great phrase)

Why does Ike get an upgraded "complimentary piece = 1st round injury bust" designation but Nicks and Phillips only get tagged as "injury busts"? On behalf of two of our Super Bowl heroes can't you re-consider? Can't we demand a re-count?

Good thing you didn't reach back to the 70's. Phil Simms definitely had a "complimentary piece = 1st round injury bust" coming his way.

What would we say about Troy Archer? "Dead = bust"?

I got lazy. Pugh is still playing for now. I think i just labeled Hillard as complimentary. didn't mean to put injury. He played well, but not a game changer like Amani Toomer...who was drafted lower.

Phil Simms would easily classify to me that....as for injuries he managed to come back after the injuries and have a career...then get hurt again...and then back. Longevity I guess is key for that.

If Nicks, for example, returned a year or two later and played some good seasons he would not be in this discussion IMO.

So a cutoff rule maybe 5 years of top league-level performance as a 1st round pick?

I would say Nicks still sits on the limit of that. Kenny Phillips and others do not.

Can we please adopt the term, “complementary piece”?

Outside of a handful of teams I’d say our first round picks have been at worst average. When you land a franchise QB and probably the most talented WR since Randy Moss, you can’t say that it’s depressing.

Nicks and Wilson getting injured was depressing. Many of the rest of the picks were starters and contributed to one of our two Super Bowls.

I guess i’m not good enough at darts to host a BBI big tymer pro dart league post on this site.

I’m dying 😂

Do you know how pathetic do you all sound?

Start a thread that has a fucking point next time.

Or play the victim role.

Darts. You know a shite activity to be the best at that nobody gives 2 fucks about. Like thinking you are an expert poster while others’ posts are to be ridiculed.

FatMan in Charlotte : 3/24/2018 11:06 am : link
I'm an expert poster.

I think I'm smart enough not to start shitty threads. That isn't being an expert - it is just self-awareness.

You can learn to start threads that have a fucking point, or you can expect to take shit. Your call.
