Here are some quotes from an article I just found.
"Well, I have a lot of confidence in Eli as a player, as a quarterback. But at this point, it’s my responsibility for the organization to make sure we take a look at Geno and, at some point, take a look at Davis and give them the opportunity to show what they can do heading into next year,” coach Ben McAdoo said."
“At some point in time, Davis will be thrown in the mix. Yes,” McAdoo said.
Also it wasn't Reese that wanted Davis Webb , it was McAdoo. Notice this paragraph. McAdoo would have drafted him possibly in the 2nd rd...
**McAdoo’s ace in the hole with his job seemingly on the line is Webb. That’s his guy. McAdoo pushed hard for him in just about every round of the draft before finally getting his way back in April.**
**So far, Webb has done nothing to disappoint. He’s known as a hard worker, a future coach and a coach’s son who has worked diligently at his craft ever since he arrived in East Rutherford. The coaching staff raves about his potential.**
**This all sounds like the Giants wanting to get Webb on the field so they can get a more accurate evaluation of what he will be at the NFL level. Pushing Manning aside now provides them the opportunity.**
**It may not have been perfect -- or gone well at all from a public relations standpoint -- but when Webb is on the field in the next few weeks, it will have achieved its intended consequences. The Giants will receive an extended look at their 22-year-old quarterback while their aging quarterback looks on.**
Bottom line , the Giants plan which Mara signed off on was to eventually start Webb. McAdoo made that very clear. McAdoo also wasn't expecting to get fired. He believed Webb was his future , and could groom him.
However the backlash from the fanbase/media for benching Eli , was so bad , Mara panicked.
Instead of letting McAdoo execute the plan , He fired McAdoo and Reese before the season ended , and now we are unsure.
If he just stuck to his original plan , we all would have seen what Webb could have done. And would have given us all a better feel , or a better picture for what we should do with the #2 pick in the draft...

Then I heard how they handled it and that Geno was starting and it all made absolutely no sense.
I don’t care what McAdoo said his plan was. What practice reps did he give Davis? Scout team, that’s what. Excuse me if I don’t believe him.
Just a shame they ruined the rest of the team around Eli as well.
That is my thought which I'm not confident in. What I am confident in is that we are better off with Shurmur/Gettleman and McAdoo/Reese. Much better. In the grand scheme of things, removing McAdoo/Reese will be of much greater benefit than seeing Webb in meaningless games.
I can believe that McAdoo pushed for Webb because he was a Rodgers-like QB. And if the plan was for Webb to sit and watch the Giants roll into the playoffs, that was okay too. Once the season was lost, Geno should have gotten a little playing time and Webb too.
Just a bad situation overall. A GM in denial, and a HC who didn’t handle adversity well.
Play Webb and tank. Plain and simple.
I was okay if Geno was mixed in so he could showcase where he was with other teams. Plus, if Webb hit a really bad patch in a game, Geno could be the bullpen...
But this thing got all cockeyed because of two incompetent fools: Mara and McAdoo. Mara should have managed this quietly in house with McAdoo, and recalibrated after the botched first plan. Stay out of the media and get the plan right.
But it got worse because McAdoo went in front of the media and sounded dumber than ever. Then Mara had a central nervous system meltdown when the fan revolt started. So all broke hell broke loose and the Mara Massacre was underway...
Just another stupid decision from a simple-minded foolish coach.
moving along...

Good summary...I never had a gripe with a decision to get Geno and preferably Webb some PT...it was the handling of it that was a debacle.
McAdoo walks into the QB meeting to tell Eli in front of the other guys? Mara isn’t even in the building that day? That was all horseshit. Mara and Reese should have sat down with Eli privately first, then giving McAdoo clear marching orders about how to handle it. He, of course, saw it as a Hail Mary chance to save his job by playing a mobile QB in Geno

eli benched himself,was very selfish.
i think that you’ve got a schtick and it hurts you as a poster and likely as a person.
your love and must protect eli at all costs is some kind of sickness that requires professional help.
All McAdoo had to do is wait for Eli to be ineffective - which Eli was many times during the year and pull him during the game for Geno .
Then it isn't about benching Eli and ruining the streak - it is about Eli's play and trying to light fire under the team ... showing everyone that no one's job is safe.
McAdoo tried to be classy and fair and it blew up in his face
Please, Macdouche just go away!!
Please, Macdouche just go away!!
I would like to add, I’m a big fan of Eli’s, but I still wanted to see Webb in there!
Leads me to believe that he thought Webb wasn't good enough to save his job at that point.

Nobody. He doesn't allow mommy in HIS basement.
Seriously, Eli said that if they're pulling him at halftime regardless of the 1st half, then whoever they plan on putting in at that point should be getting the start and receiving the appropriate practice reps instead of the ridiculous plan of him splitting 1st team reps and getting benched in the 2nd half no matter what.
Eli was taking scout team reps that week, and was going over the playbook with Webb while eating breakfast the day after these shenanigans occurred. How is any of that selfish? At all?
