Eli Apple's clean slate takes on greater significance for NY Giants in 2018 - ( New Window )
The depth at CB is downright scary!

The guys DG brought in are nothing more then glorified STs. I believe Riley has a little experience, but non-the-less, we will probably have to draft another CB in the 3rd or 4th rounds. Apple, as Stapleton mentions, must mature and take on a more significant role this year. He’s got coverage skills, but needs to improve technique obviously. Let’s hope he comes to camp this year ready to dedicate himself and play better.
The Giants made a mistake in not pursuing

voiding the guarantees in Apple's contract. With the Conduct Detrimental to the Team distinction, the CBA allows for clubs to pursue repayment of the remaining pro-rated signing bonus and voiding guarantees in his contract. By not enforcing the forfeiture clause in Apple's contract, it makes his contract more of a burden for trade partners or just an outright release.

They still could have given Apple a clean slate, but by voiding the guarantees, Eli would not be entitled to any financial security and would have to "earn" his salary.

The biggest mistake you can make is to marry someone with the expectation that the person will change after marriage.

Eli Apple had a lot of stress in his family life last year. That has been documented.Still, the likelihood that he will be a different person this year is unlikely. It is also unlikely that he will be able to follow a ball in the air or be really willing to tackle players like Zeke.

I will be shocked if the giants do not sign another corner or draft one in the first three rounds.

For the same money I would much prefer DRC to Brandon Marshall.
I'm concerned too. But Gettleman did talk to Apple

and is aware of more detail in this soap opera than we are. Also, DRC is still out there. Maybe, he'll come home if he realizes that he's not getting what he wants from another team.
The Apple issues
bc4life : 3/24/2018 8:52 am : link
were not evident in college and did not manifest themselves in his first year. DG & Shurmur are smart to give hima clean slate. The fact that Meyer said he will be meeting with Apple during off-season is significant and has been stepped over during the discussion.

And all the secondary will look better witha solid pass rush.
Apple is a guy you have to take a chance on

The talent is there and if he can get his head on straight is a valuable member of the team.
DRC is

still a FA correct?
I don't mind them keeping Apple

The mistake is dumping DRC and not re-signing Cockrell when his deal was only for 3 million a year. The CB depth is extremely scary and it's only made worse knowing they could have made it much better with a few different choices. Then the Browns get EJ Gaines for 4 million. What are they doing?

Are you also advocating that they seek to enforce that nefarious clause on Landon Collins , as well? By publicly criticizing and ostracizing a teammate , Collins should have been suspended . What he did was outrageous . And from what pulpit of righteousness did he speak ? Did Eli take a knee? Collins had a terrible season that was camouflaged by a few big hits . He should concentrate on his game instead of worrying about others.

Apple has a world of talent . I suspect he has some personality issues that go beyond his mother , father and step father. Let’s see the Giants get proactive by getting the guy some support . That Urban has to speak to him is not a good sign .
We’re building for 2019 and beyond - no worries

I’m fine with us bringing in rookies to compete for 3rd and 4th CB. Can’t dedicate significant dollars there if we’re not in win-now mode.

As much as I like DRC, he needs to go to a win-now ream. Makes sense for all parties.
... And regarding Apple
TD : 3/24/2018 11:10 am : link
Better to see if he can turn it around this year in a rebuilding year than to lose him and watch him blossom elsewhere (potentially) while we have to invest assets to find a young, good starting CB.

I agree with you regarding Collins publicly calling out Apple. It was wrong. He certainly hasn't earned any clout to be airing the laundry out in public. Of course, the Giants can't enforce the Forfeiture clause with Collins as he wasn't suspended with the Conduct Detrimental to the Team designation. It isn't so much "nefarious" as every player has a Forfeiture clause in their contract. I don't think even a player such as Eli Manning has enough clout to negotiate the clause out of a contract. It is all part of the CBA.

I have mentioned recently on another thread that it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion that Collins receives a second contract. He had a down year from the year before. And his "leadership" might not be the style that DG wants to reward. He has a lot to prove this year, if he wants to remain a Giant.
I'm not a big fan of this writer

normally.

But he is spot on here. Corner is a huge concern

This is a passing league. Our pass rush is a question mark.

Our safeties are slow

And we have basically two corners who can cover when not injured or pissing off management or their teammates.

I am really leaning to trading down in this draft and garnering more picks. Much work needs to be done to address all the needs this team has. Should we be able to draft down and pick up somebody's 2019 #1 to enable us to grab a qb there, then rebuild the back seven and OL with this year's draft.
Becoming a teammate again is one thing...

getting back on track to developing into a good CB is another.

This moron better start listening to his coaches and stop with poor play with the ball in the air. He contributed to several of those early losses last season as much as anyone.

I'd be shocked if they don't sign
Strahan91 : 3/24/2018 2:57 pm : link
one or two of the cover corners left on the market. Not sure why they decided not to resign Cockrell at that price. Right now they have:

Jenkins
Apple
Deayon (who I like but still)
BW Webb
Brandon Dixon
Curtis Riley
Teddy Williams

Yikes...

The options left on the market aren't all that intriguing as your #2 corner either if we see more of the same from Apple. Byron Maxwell, Breaux, Verner, etc. Too bad DRC wouldn't take that pay cut
wish there was some way we could send him away

. Players like this guy, we do not need. Not a man, and not a tough player. Other words describe him.
