NFT: Amazing Video of Yankee Red Sox Game (April, 1931)...

M.S. : 3/24/2018 12:08 pm
...at Yankee Stadium that will take you back in time with actual sound.

A couple things to look for:

(1) Check out the crazy left field jag at the Stadium before it was straightened;

(2) Mayor Jimmy Walker (Beau James) looking dapper as ever;

(3) Lots of Babe Ruth.

This is a "You are there," type video. Really quite evocative.

The sound off Babe’s bat is really awesome
Pretty awesome

Some things never change. Love the comment about the fans in the bleachers are farthest from the field and are the most knowledgeable. Also, notice how higher the catcher is in his stance. The high pitch was called a strike.
Amazing

was trying to figure out why the Sox caps had an "L" on them before finally realizing it was a sock - red no doubt.

Wow very cool. Two of the best franchises in sports

Not just baseball. I dont really consider it a rivalry anymore but it sure is fun to have them both in the same division. And for once the Red Sox lead in payroll so that’s a non argument lol.

You answered my question. I thought it was an L also.
That is a fantastic video

Fun to see the greats and the crowd. It is comical as nobody knows what to say on early video unlike today's packaged questions and cliche answers. Good stuff.

I forgot how dressed up everyone got going to anything back then. I remember dressing up to fly when I was a kid and my mother being aghast at people who weren't dressed nicely. How the world has changed.
No team names on the uniforms looks very strange.

Players picking up gloves where they left them the previous inning, marching bands with the teams in the parade. Amazed at how big the outfield was - death valley was appropriately named. Didn't know that Babe Ruth was taller than Lou Gherig.

Great find
I think for Old Timers Day the Yankees should have the fans

dress up like the old time ones. Suits for the men and dresses for the women. It would add a little extra flare to the day.

Loved how everyone was dressed to the nines. Suits, fedoras, dresses and furs.

Funny, yes about the OF and the bleachers that far back with the flag pool in centerfield. Flag at half staff? I've seen pictures from the early 20's with cars in the OF before the bleachers were built.

Great find.

Stan in LA... I had started a thread based on an opinion piece by Colin at GBN. Bill L. posted a story about a rabid raccoon, and then I (just being silly) posted the words to the Beatles song:

We were talking at yesterday...there’s a mini-scandal up here in Albany where there was a obviously rabid raccoon running around a shopping area. It’s a little town and apparently the police were ill-equipped to deal with it and, figuring they didn’t want to go around shooting in a populated place, ran the raccoon over and killled it. Apparently, they weren’t initially successful, so they ran it over a few times. Of course, they were caught on tape. And, people became understandable empathetic because it looked gruesome.

So, my friend heads the Rabies testing lab here and they got the remains of the raccoon. Yeah, it had rabies. But they’re getting all sorts of phone calls and complaints from random people saying that the poor raccoon couldn’t possibly have rabies, that the test was wrong, that they are covering for the police, etc., etc., etc.

Point being, that the raccoon, who was potentially lethal while alive, became a victim through the nature of his death. And because of that victimization, people refused to believe results of objective testing analysis. Their own worldview caused them to ignore everything but what they wanted to believe and then to either deny or morph everything, supportive or contrary to their view, into something that validated their view.

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
Rocky had come equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival

His rival it seems had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy
Her name was Magil and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy

Now she and her man who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoe down
Rocky burst in and grinning a grin
He said Danny boy this is a showdown
But Daniel was hot, he drew first and shot
And Rocky collapsed in the corner, ah

Thought the guy doing the play by play was Red Barber but he didn't do his first play by play until 1934.

I believe so... I had to do a double-take, but I believe you're right... the flag pole is indeed in left center!

6 to 3 and Ruth homered. Notice that the Yankees dugout was on the 3rd base side back then.

The flag pole is in the field of play there. I don't remember ever seeing that, but I do remember when the monuments in deep center were in the field of play. If the ball got back in there, it was an inside the park HR.
