BBI Mock Draft – DISCUSSION Thread

Matt G : 4/1/2018 10:46 pm
We will use this as a discussion thread to keep the SELECTIONS thread uncluttered. These threads will be used for the duration of the entire draft.

Once a team is on the clock, they will have two hours to make a selection. If a team goes on the clock after 4pm, their two hour window will roll over to the next day. For example, if you go on the clock at 4:30pm, you will have until 9:30 am to make a selection. Picks may be made between 6pm and 9am if GMs are online and following the draft thread. The time limit only applies during the 9am to 6pm timeframe. If the two hour time limit expires, I will make a pick using any list that the GM for the team has sent me in advance (send lists to the email address in my profile) or in the absence of a list, I will use the GBN Big Board with a little discretion so as not make an obvious dumb pick (i.e.: Philadelphia Eagles won’t be taking a QB in the 1st round this year). If a GM misses two consecutive picks without providing a prospect list or making some form of contact with me (email or posting on the draft thread) the spot will be reassigned to one of the BBIers who have expressed an interest to fill the vacancy.

Please utilize the BBI Mock Draft Spreadsheet . The spreadsheet contains the draft order (RD1-6) by team and GM with a fairly comprehensive list of both available and taken prospects based on the GBN Big Board (as well as several other prospects that did not make the GBN Big Board). I will try to keep the spreadsheet and thread updated as often as possible.

that's good in theory but taking franchise QBs in the NFL never really works out that way. For example...Winston is 24 years old, has all the talent and has shown flashes. They are going to see it through with him considering he was the #1 overall pick in the draft, unless they just don't think he's any good at all. If Tampa thinks that he is absolutely 100% not their QB of the future and are ready to move on, then sure, taking Allen would be smart. But a) they don't feel that way and b) Winston has shown more flashes in the NFL than lots of QBs, he's more of a sure thing than Allen is at this point. Taking Allen doesn't solve their problem.

I don't see it at all with Winston, and he's a guy I liked coming out of FSU. If I'm Tampa's GM by now I've made the choice of whether or not I'm interested in paying Winston that big second contract. I would not be, and thus I'd look to trade him and pick a replacement in this draft. At least I'm keeping the QB position at the rookie wage scale, and I'm probably not losing much from what I have now. Conversely, if Allen pans out it would be a huge upgrade...I'd be better at QB, have a better long term cap picture, and have whatever I got back for Winston in trade.

That Winston was a first rounder three years ago shouldn't matter. That's a sunk cost that, I would think, wouldn't inform future decision making.

I don't think so. Anything is possible. If we could trade, then things might appear more sane, but we can't so sometimes we make a move that appears unlikely. When the real draft happens, the teams often make crazy moves that we had no way of predicting. Like KC's trade up to take Mahonnes or Texans' trade to get Watson.

The Bucs have Jameis Winston, why would they waste a pick on Allen. They already have a young starting QB. Bad choice.

DE Marcus Davenport

Skins really need several positions, those two linebackers that went just ahead of us would have really helped, but Davenport has enormous talent, so we're glad to have him

Chubb has had a better college career and is a great prospect, but I really think Davenport has a better frame, and could end up the better pro.

Well, my pick is in
MadPlaid : 4/2/2018 11:22 pm : link
Thanks a bunch, SirYesSir. Totally snaked my guy. I was so set to take Davenport with my pick. Ready with everything. Even a sweet gif too. Well, not true, but I bet I could have found one.

I'm not sore. Because Jaire Alexander is a pretty nice consolation prize. And fits a need too, so I have that going for me. Which is nice. I realize picking Alexander is a big risk considering his injury history, but I feel he has top ten potential when healthy. If he meets that potential, the Cheeseheads are going to be very happy.

I'm 8 hours away from you guys. I wanted Vita Vea, the DT out of Washington. Is it too late?

I was awake until my time, then ?I just couldn't stay awake anymore.

Unfortunately with the number of picks made subsequently and the real possibility that at least one would have taken Ward I believe it is

Sorry, yesterday was tough for me to send out email reminders... As we have done in the past, you can always send me your board if you are worried about you pick coming up while you're asleep...
Taking longer for me than usual

I have 5 players with comparable grades at the top of my board
Ravens pick is in
Mike in NY : 4/3/2018 9:37 am : link
As I said earlier, this was a tough selection for me because I had 5 players in the top row of my draft board. Had one of the DB's (Ward, James) fallen to me at 16 that would have been a no brainer, but both were selected. Ultimately the deciding factor for me was that there are very few pass rushers in this draft that strike me as more than situational players and those that were there I probably would have had to overdraft in Round 2 because they likely would not be there for my Round 3 pick whereas Harold Landry is not a reach at this point in my opinion. I think the defensive scheme of the Ravens will allow him to revert back to his 2016 form. You can never have too many pass rushers.
It's never a reach

Take Vea, shoring up the interior of the DL. Best player on the board at a position of need.

Didn't want to reach for an offensive tackle.
Vita Vea
allstarjim : 4/3/2018 10:32 am : link
is a great selection. I can see him going much higher, even in the top 10, very easily.

I know Vea would have been Miami's selection had he not been auto-selected due to missing 2 hour window. He was one of the five on my list from which I chose Landry. Considering Arizona went for Payne, Vea was probably on DC's list as well.
Cowboys would have selected Vea at 19

skins were debating
SirYesSir : 4/3/2018 10:48 am : link
between davenport, vea, and payne. and that's the order I ended up with. vea was very hard not to take, looks so disruptive, but skins taking a bigger d-lineman with their first pick last year convinced me to address the outside rush
and actually one more d lineman
SirYesSir : 4/3/2018 11:03 am : link

Sorry for the delay. Morning meeting. I've picked a lineman high for Seattle every year since doing this. It seems they've needed one since their AFC days. Wilson won't be able to avoid the rush forever and the defense can't bail them out as they used to. They have to establish themselves up front.

SEA beat you to it! Not surprised to see Connor Williams go at this point as, after Nelson, there are a number of OL who carry late Round 1 grades. The exact order they go in real life will depend on how they fit individual schemes IMHO
Cowboys pick Calvin Ridley
Rick in Dallas : 4/3/2018 11:57 am : link
A lot of buzz in Dallas that Dez will be cut this offseason.
If not you put Ridley on opposite side of Dez replacing Williams. More weapons on offense.
Defense will be addressed in next several rounds.

Ridley was #2 on my list (Vea was #3). Baltimore has a lot of ties to Alabama and definitely has a need at WR even after FA signings, but I guess I let Sy talk me out of it by showing that there was enough depth at the position that I could try to fill a different need where there was less depth first

I agree... McGlinchey is getting over shadowed by Nelson, but he is a really good LT. I think he is definitely the best in this draft and think he will be solid for years.

Personally not a fan of McGlinchey. Too many times against better opponents he reminded me of Ereck Flowers. As I posted earlier, we are seeing the run of OL that I anticipated in the latter part of Round 1

You can have doubts about McGlinchy, but he should not in anyway remind you of Ereck Flowers. Completely different player.

McGlinchey is a great pick.
I think McGlinchey
allstarjim : 4/3/2018 2:12 pm : link
is the best LT prospect in the last two drafts, and I particularly loved Garrett Bolles last year, and he was taken at #20 overall and the top OT chosen in the 2017 draft.
McGlinchey was on my short list
YAJ2112 : 4/3/2018 2:20 pm : link
as were a couple of DLs. Went with Wynn and his versatility on the inside.
McGlinchey
ryanmkeane : 4/3/2018 2:31 pm : link
could be a trade up target for us where we use one of our 3rd rounders if he's somehow still there around the 25 range.

could be a headache for McVay but a bigger headache for opposing OL. Probably a reach but Rams seem like a team that will gamble on top 10 talent.
Just curious
Knee of Theismann : 4/3/2018 5:07 pm : link
Did Nelson and Mcglinchey play on the same side? My question is could playing next to Nelson have helped Mcglinchey at all? It seems funny that the "Best LT prospect in two years" just so happened to be on the same line as the best OG prospect in like 10 years.
