Giants Officially Re-Sign (C) Brett Jones

Center Brett Jones has re-signed with the Giants on a one-year contract.

Jones, who turns 27 in July, signed the one-year, $2.914 million deal tendered by the team as a restricted free agent. So he will become an unrestricted free agent next spring if he doesn’t then ink a long-term deal to stay.

The Giants’ tender had attached a second-round pick as compensation if another NFL team had tried to sign Jones, which reflected how the Giants valued him after his breakout 2017 season.

Brett Jones is a nice story

Top oline in Canadan FL then gets signed by the Giants. Misses his first year with an injury but comes back strong to be a very good player for us.
'very good'?

I'm not sold on him as a starter, and $2.9M sounds like a lot to me, I hope I am wrong
He

may never be a pro bowler (I don't care about that. It's a popularity contest now) but as long as he remains steady at the pivot I'm ok with him. However I don't want the starting job handed to him like so many starting jobs were handed to guys with no competition. Draft a guy, sign a vet or both and may the best man win
He is perfectly fine for

now. He is descent stop gap while we continue to build a solid O-line.
If he can just

stay on the field, that is something......

Yes, he is a little pricey, and he is average at best, but beggars can't be choosers sometimes.....

We still have three more positions to fill......I think we will be forced to play Flowers in a new position, no matter how good/bad he is.....so we need two more starters......what we need is to pick up a few more OL, via draft or castoffs from other teams, and create some competition for those positions.......Solder is the only "lock" at a position....
I would rather have had
SHO'NUFF : 4/9/2018 1:27 pm : link
the 2nd round tender.
They had to give him a 2nd round tender
AcesUp : 4/9/2018 1:35 pm : link
If they gave him the lower level, another team is likely to offer and the Giants are then put in the awkward position of having to match on a guy they are probably on the fence about long term. If he starts a full season and provides adequate production, that tender amount is a bargain.
If we get a center in the draft
TMS : 4/9/2018 2:42 pm : link
that shows more potential we can always opt out. Think DG is working on draft help for the OL as a special priority. Should we trade down from #2 we could cet a few options in that regard.
Freak in a good way?

Like, what, 6'3" 320lbs and a helmet that could probably hold Lake Michigan.

A freak. Which is good.

Lord knows this offensive line needs some rebuilding. Got the LT spot locked down. Try to lock down another marquee starter in the first 3 rounds of the draft, and you build depth at the other spots. BJ gets one year to prove that he can be a full-time starter. The kid works hard and deserves a chance to take the bull by the horns.
Jones is fine

he'll be even better with talent around him.
He's a decent starter - very good to have as a backup.

Offensive linemen cost more than they used to.
Better and cheaper than Richburg.
FStubbs : 4/9/2018 4:52 pm : link
He's a good signing. Sure, there are better centers, but you can build a roster with guys like Jones on it.
Tough, gritty, hard working player that should never be considered
Brown Recluse : 4/9/2018 4:53 pm : link
a long term solution.

So you as GM would have signed him for less? Are the Giants being generous, or is he fleecing them? Maybe they just pay the going rate for a starter in the NFL.
Another in what is becoming a litany of smart Gettelman decisions

Jones beat out Richburg who when he recovered found he had lost his job...as he should have. Jones is the better player and is still on an uptick.

+1
Jones is a solid player to have on the roster
Jay on the Island : 4/9/2018 9:08 pm : link
He has started at both G and C. Is he a great player? No if he doesn't improve he is a slightly below average to average player. If he does improve then he could be a Shaun O'Hara type that gets the most out of his physical ability due to hard work and intelligence. Hopefully the Giants will add someone in the draft to challenge Jones for the starting job at C(Price, Daniels, Ragnow, Rankins, Corbett, . Ideally Jones will be the primary backup interior lineman.
Meh.
Klaatu : 4/10/2018 6:58 am : link
What else were they going to do, lose their only other Center?
Proven talent,
oldog : 4/10/2018 9:44 am : link
who has shown flexibility, adaptability, talent and character. But looking at the comments here, (from those who really know these things), we should regard him as a barely adequate, marginally acceptable, stopgap. Arrogance?
