2017 Draft article on Davis Webb - Interesting Read

Pete from Woodstock : 4/10/2018 7:43 am
One exec said he's the best prospect in the draft..
I guess we'll see if he's right and the Giants believe in him by picking Barkley at #2
Webb - ( New Window )
So if they draft Barkely...

It's because of Webb? Hmmm...
Nassib was also rumored to be a first round pick

I am sorry.. Webb has yet to show anything that makes me think he is anything more than a backup quality QB.. if you can't replace a 37 year old QB who coaches wanted to bench and can't even beat out Geno Fucking smith as the backup QB.. there is nothing that we should expect from him.. if he turns out to be good then its great for us.. but its like a lottery.. don't use it to make your decision on second pick..
enough of this shit already. Reese/Ross had to be the source.
Victor in CT : 4/10/2018 8:36 am : link
Webb isn't driving the Giants draft. If they love a QB, they will take one, if not they won't. They aren't passing on a gut they think can be a high probablity, 15yr solution a la Eli for a fucking project. JFC!

Not necessarily, but if they don't believe in Webb, it greatly increases the odds of them drafting a QB.

At least one exec felt like Greg Hardy was a solid citizen. There's someone to like or love any prospect.

Didn't you hear, it's everyone else's fault but Webb's that he didn't get playing time. He was so clearly good against practice squad players, but Reese/Mcadoo had it out for him, despite the fact that these were the guys who actually selected him. Not like a sinking front office/coach tandem would hold back a guy they believed to be the next franchise qb to save both of their jobs. More likely, Reese/Ross/Mcadoo realized they made a mother mistake selecting this guy in the third round, and tried to hide him.
An interesting question
YANKEE28 : 4/10/2018 9:14 am : link
about Davis Webb that I wish some beat writer would investigate- especially since Marc Ross has been on radio and TV several times.

Davis Webb was taken with the 87th overall pick of last years draft.

With the prior pick (86th), a trade took place. The Chiefs traded their 104th, 132nd, and 245th pick to the Vikings, so that they could move to the pick in front of the Giants.

With the pick, the Chiefs selected RB Kareem Hunt. (WOW-talk about a brilliant move)

My question-what was going on in the Giants draft room as they planned their selection at #87? If the Chiefs did not move up to grab Kareem Hunt, would Hunt have been drafted by the Giants instead of Davis Webb? Its interesting because with their next pick in Round 4, the Giants did take another RB, Wayne Gallman. Clearly they wanted to come out of the draft with a running back.

We have heard that McAdoo pushed for Davis Webb in Round 2, but who knows how seriously that was considered.

Would Davis Webb have ever become a Giant if Kareem Hunt was still available at 87?

I'd like to think they would have taken Hunt. Clearly they were looking at RBs in that area of the draft.
Jump ahead trades
Spider56 : 4/10/2018 9:38 am : link
I for one did not remember that Hunt went right before The Giants took Webb. This wasn’t the first time teams jumped ahead of the Giants and took someone we were supposedly interested in ... JR was far too passive on draft day.
Reese is such shit
bronxgiant : 4/10/2018 10:34 am : link
to you guys is a sorry state. The man picked Engram and Tomlinson. If Hunt was the target and someone traded ahead of him one spot he is timid. The man didn't do a good job with OL or LB but the team have some nice pieces at other positions. The damn team needed a real coach not a novice!

If Reese was a good GM, he'd still be here. Thats really all there is to it. He had multiple opportunities to turn this team around and he couldn't do it. I didn't like him when he was here and I'm not going to pretend I feel any differently about his performance just because he's gone.

the mike : 4/10/2018 10:59 am : link

Fascinating point and can only hope that the trade occurred because Andy Reid somehow knew that Giants were about to take Hunt.. Amazing how something like this can change the entire trajectory of a franchise. We have actually seen several surprising draft day choices in recent years that have hurt the Giants - 1) the Redskins selecting guard Brandon Scherff in 2015 with the fifth pick forcing Reese to take Flowers... and 2) Tennessee jumping ahead of the Giants with a trade to select Jack Conklin in 2016 forcing Reese to take Apple...

Hopefully Gettleman is more prepared/aware of draft day maneuvering than we seemed to have been in the recent past... huge advantage if we do.
People keep laughing at the idea of Davis Webb being the guy.

Agreed... he has a slightly higher floor than Darnold and Rosen because of footwork and decision making, but with his arm, size and passion for the game, he may have a much higher ceiling...

That may be the case... and I won't argue too much against it as I've often said that I also felt it was time for him to go... BUT... that said...

1) I still wonder why so many seem to despise a guy who played a large part in the two SB championships in the past decade (but have no problem singing the praises of everyone else...except Ross of course... who played a role in them)...

But more importantly, 2) ok, he didn't do a good job his last few years as GM of the team... but no need to make shit up.

Take lax counsel's post above where he says:

Quote:
He was so clearly good against practice squad players, but Reese/Mcadoo had it out for him, despite the fact that these were the guys who actually selected him. Not like a sinking front office/coach tandem would hold back a guy they believed to be the next franchise qb to save both of their jobs. This is what you call 'reality'? "More likely" counts as 'reality' now? In what reality does the GM of the Giants make coaching decisions? If this was the Cowboys.... ok, maybe I could see it. But the Giants rarely have operated like that to my knowledge. But that doesn't stop some from putting it out there that it was Reese's call to NOT play Webb. And then he says it's "More likely, Reese/Ross/McAddo realized they made a mother mistake selecting this guy in the third round, and tried to hide him.".

Yeah, they realized they made a mistake halfway through a rookie QB (who they'd already had stated needed some coaching up and wasn't due to play all year) and chose to hide him (again, as if Reese and Ross involve themselves in those decisions... which has yet to be proven so). That's your reality?

Then let's take Spider56's post where he says:

Quote:
This wasn’t the first time teams jumped ahead of the Giants and took someone we were supposedly interested in ... JR was far too passive on draft day.

Wait... I thought the knock on him was that he wasn't aggressive enough to go after the guys he wanted? Now he's too passive? It's hard to keep up with your 'reality' dep.

Lastly, there's the mike's (who I actually like some of his posts) post, where he says:

Quote:
Fascinating point and can only hope (hope?) that the trade occurred because Andy Reid somehow knew that Giants were about to take Hunt...

It's automatically assumed that the Chiefs jumped ahead of the Giants because they somehow knew that the Giants were going to select Hunt because of....? Oh... because the Giants selected a RB a round later... it couldn't also be because perhaps they were afraid of the Raiders taking him with the pick after the Giants pick (since they'd just cut Lynch)... OR, maybe they figured the Texans may nab him (they actually did take a RB, D'Onta Foreman)... OR, maybe the Seahawks (who also needed a RB). So you had three teams in a row that had RB needs but not only is it assumed that Reese 'dropped the ball' in allowing the Chiefs to get ahead of them in order to draft Hunt... but also that they would've drafted Hunt over Webb in the first place!

And this is your reality? Sounds like a bunch of made up bullshit to me so that some can continue to piss on a guy who for some reason very few want to give even an ounce of credit to his role in 2 more Lombardi's being in the case. I could whine about this SOOO much more than I have over the past several months but I haven't because I get it... kind of...
