Skip drafting Saquon Barkley because of Wayne Gallman?

NYG27 : 4/10/2018 9:06 am
That's the same type of nonsense BBIers are mentioning by stating the Giants should avoid to draft a potential Franchise QB because of Davis Webb.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Webb. I've liked everything I've read about the kid and his amazing work ethic. He might even turn out being a better QB than anyone in this draft. Although you don't avoid drafting a potential Franchise QB because of Davis Webb.....just as much as avoiding drafting a potential Franchise RB because we have Wayne Gallman on the roster.
Wayne Gallman
Chip : 4/10/2018 9:09 am : link
is a backup at best. Darkwa was our best RB last year. They would not run Gallman last year on 3rd and one. He is not the answer.
It's not an apples to apples comparison
Chris684 : 4/10/2018 9:11 am : link
There are exceptions but generally speaking RB is not a position you groom like QB.

You can say with much greater confidence that Wayne Gallman is not Saquon Barkley than you can that Davis Webb is not Darnold/Rosen/Mayfield/Allen.
I think....
OBJRoyal : 4/10/2018 9:11 am : link
most what most posters are saying is that they are fine with a true franchise QB at 2, is there one to be had?? If Cleveland takes the one that the Giants feel will be a true franchise QB, do you reach and take a QB, just to take a QB??
Im fine not taking Barkley (even though Id love him)
UConn4523 : 4/10/2018 9:11 am : link
but not taking him will have nothing to do with Wayne Gallman.

This is exactly what the OP is saying.. if the Giants think there is a franchise QB at 2nd pick, Webb shouldn't be part of the equation.. anyhow so far in his career Gallman has proven he is a better NFL player than Webb..
Gallman will have the same impact on the decision to take Barkley
Victor in CT : 4/10/2018 9:19 am : link
as Webb will on the decision to take a QB: NONE

is the motivation for this thread? Are there actually a lot of comments saying we shouldn't take Barkley because we have Gallman?

Seems like a strawman argument - I've not even seen this mentioned, let alone mentioned frequently.
one significant difference
giants#1 : 4/10/2018 9:25 am : link
is that Gallman actually saw playing time and so the Giants FO and coaching staff have a better idea of what his ceiling might be.

And if they felt he was a legit starting RB that could carry the ball 20-25 times, then they would not draft Barkley.
Its not really the same thing.

I'm guessing its the counter to those saying we shouldn't draft a QB because of Webb.
Ahh..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/10/2018 9:28 am : link
gotcha.

Not even sure there are a lot of people saying Webb is the reason not to draft a QB either.
I think people need to stop thinking of Barkley as just a RB
blueblood : 4/10/2018 9:32 am : link
and start thinking of him as I heard one draft guy say yesterday as a weapon.

Sure he is a RB.. He can also line up in the slot. You can split him out wide. He is a total mismatch for almost every LB in the NFL. He can do more than just wheel route and short routes. Apparently he is working on running the entire route tree that WR's should run.. He has natural hands to catch the ball.

I think thinking that the Giants arent going to draft Barkley because they have Wayne Gallman is silly. They might not draft him for numerous other reasons.. They draft a QB, OL or DL. They trade down and miss out on him.. but it will NOT be because of Wayne Gallman...
Its apples and oranges.
Brown Recluse : 4/10/2018 9:35 am : link
Two completely different positions. One in which there are every down players and utility players, and the other in which you either play or you don't.

And as far as the whole Webb Vs Rookie thing...look, I think most people have no clue what Webb can or cannot do, but understand that the Giants are much more informed than anyone here and if they do pass on a QB because they think Webb is their guy - then there is probably some plausible reason why - and they'll see how it plays out before "throwing their remote" or whatever other childish reaction people say they'll have because their favorite sports team didn't do what they wanted them to.
Take the best player available irrespective of current roster..
the mike : 4/10/2018 9:59 am : link
LT was the greatest draft pick in Giants history and was selected by George Young when the only real strength the Giants had had in the '70s was the defense led by their linebacking corps... The Giants truthfully had no need for a linebacker in 1981 with starters Brad Van Pelt, Harry Carson and Brian Kelly being three of the best in the NFL. If they had instead drafted for "need", they might have taken offensive players selected just behind them like running backs Freeman McNeil or Randy McMillan; or wide receivers David Verser or Mark Nichols (yes I know - who????)...

LT transformed the Giants into one of the top five NFL franchises in the super bowl era. If Young had not made this selection based on best player available, I am convinced that we would still be the Cleveland Browns today... We want transformative players with character, courage and leadership - not untested bodies to fill roster holes...

Take Barkley or trade the pick!
what's better than one running back
Giantsfan79 : 4/10/2018 10:04 am : link
two running backs ha ha ha. I don't care how good Barkley is he's not playing every snap. You're going to need a second running back from time to time and Gallman certainly flashed a lot of potential this year.

There's room on the team for both. Let's not trash Gallman because Barkley may be better.
It's not about Barkley vs. Gallman.
Klaatu : 4/10/2018 10:07 am : link
It's about not drafting Barkley at #2 (for whatever reason), and then drafting another RB somewhere in the middle rounds, presumably, when we have a ton of other needs.

We're drafting a 230 lb faster Jerry Rice.

This
Taking Barkley is not taking him just because
DonnieD89 : 4/10/2018 10:43 am : link
he's a RB. If OBJ is signed and you have the opportunity to change the opponent's whole defensive game plan, because of the "weapons" that the Giants have is a transcendent move. LT made the offense change there game plan and look what happened. This is an opportunity for the Giants to do the same thing, except on the other side of the ball. I'm not saying Barkley is going to be the equivalent to LT, but the opportunity of of both Beckham and Barkley in the offense is a game changer in itself.

The concept of identifying a roster hole
JonC : 4/10/2018 11:05 am : link
and merely plugging it with a draft pick isn't a tactic often deployed, same with the reverse of not drafting a prospect because a player of promise is already there. That's where fans trying to identify draft picks get stuck, got to look bigger picture and the draft at hand is not always about the season at hand.

us a weapon like TIKI was at the top of his game. Except he may be a much better blocker. That would be huge if ELI still has enough left.

Maybe I've missed it - I don't think I've seen anyone here suggest that the Giants should pass on Barkley because they have Gallman.

Gallman can be a really solid rotational back. I like him a lot. But he doesn't have the same ceiling Barkley has. Not even close, really.

Tiki was one of the best blocking backs in the league. He was literally great at everything on the field.

I wonder how much it eats at him that we left the game early. He could have potentially won a Super Bowl the very next year, and had he played a couple more seasons - been in the top 10 rushers in NFL history and secured his spot in the Hall of Fame.

this a clever but inaccurate analogy
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 4/10/2018 11:40 am : link
Webb was a developmental QB from the start. Gallman wasn't the same thing. I like Gallman a lot, but he doesn't have the upside of Barkley. With Webb we just don't know.

Cleveland takes Barkley.......of course that means Eli is gone next season.....Does Mara have the _____ to do it?
So you draft another developmental QB
bronxgiant : 4/10/2018 12:56 pm : link
and hope to get game breaking players around him. Or you stick with a game manager and add to the game breaking players around him? Barkley and OBJ in space creates trouble for any defense. Think our defense will like the time they might finally get to sit on the bench and recover. Last year the 3 and outs killed them early and they never recovered. Barkley helps this team on so many levels. A QB sits on the bench for 2 years of watching Barkley light up the NFL. Webb like the Philly QB doesn't have to be a super star. Just manage the damn game. The coach almost got to the SB with a QB who was a pick up.

Unless injured, Eli will the starting QB for the 2018 Giants, doesn't matter who they draft.
