Why isn't there more excitement about our 2nd round pick?

markky : 4/11/2018 9:08 am
Look who we've grabbed in the 2nd since 2003:

Osi Umenyiora
Chris Snee
Corey Webster
Steve Smith
Linval Joseph
Jonathan Hankins
Landon Collins
Sterling Shephard
Dalvin Tomlinson

Sure, there have been a couple of clunkers and a couple of meh's, but we've done pretty well. And every year some amazing talent slips out of the first into the second, and we're at the top of the second.

I'm confident we'll have our choice of a couple of great players at that position and identify the right one. Probably on the OL, but who knows.
Hopefully, the trend will continue

new regime is a big factor, obsessing over a rare #2 overall pick is a big factor.

I'm not so sure about OL at #34.
If I remember correctly, Strahan, Sehorn and Toomer

Because of whom they drafted

The last time they had the #2 pick.

It s a great opportunity picking there.

And Mark Collins, Erik Howard and Pepper Johnson, who were all taken in '86.

And Leonard Marshall and Joe Morris.

Didn't forget, they're under the ugh/miss category. Clint Sintim was also 2nd round I think. I stopped at 2003 for a reason!

Point is the same, we have a better than 50% chance of grabbing a great player - as good as half the folks that will be drafted in the first round.
It depends greatly...
Strip-Sack : 4/11/2018 9:14 am : link
IMO on where they go at #2 ...if it’s Barkley, I would think they grab an edge rusher if a good one drops...if it’s Chubb at #2, it most likely would be interior Oline as I think you can probably still get a good RB in rd 3....of course everything gets thrown out if they trade down and/or someone at a different position who grades out very high unexpectedly drops out of the first rd.
the track record is nice
UConn4523 : 4/11/2018 9:15 am : link
but its basically irrelevant now that Reese is gone.
And if you go back a little further....
Emlen'sGremlins : 4/11/2018 9:20 am : link
....we also picked Strahan, Toomer and Barber in the 2nd Round.

I'm always excited for Round 2!
Toomer was a 2nd
jvm52106 : 4/11/2018 9:32 am : link
pick and #34 actually....

Courtland Sutton in RD 2???
All the more reason to
Beer Man : 4/11/2018 9:33 am : link
trade back and pick up another 2nd rounder. ;>
I am very excited about the 2nd round pick
Jay on the Island : 4/11/2018 9:47 am : link
The Giants should have some very good options there between offensive linemen and edge rushers.
My memory..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/11/2018 9:48 am : link
could be going bad, but didn't we take Butch Woolfolk in the 1st the same year we picked Joe Morris??

For some reason, I remembered picking RB's back to back that year, but I don't even think I followed the draft back then.
I just think its being over shadowed by the excitement over the 1st
PatersonPlank : 4/11/2018 9:49 am : link
round pick. Its not often we get the #2 pick in the whole draft. I am excited about the 2nd round pick too.
Simply put
QB Snacks : 4/11/2018 9:59 am : link
it's an easier decision. The board will dictate the pick whereas the Giants hold the keys at #2 and will have multiple directions they can go in.
It's more than all that...
Bill L : 4/11/2018 10:00 am : link
where we are positioned, and because of all the (arguably) overvalued QB's, our 2nd round pick is really a 1st round pick.
I mean

Firstly, how do you gauge the excitement of this place? Number B, how dare you. And fourth, I am super excited about every pick.
Because

It'll be an unsexy pick...a Guard

Yes, we took both guys in the same draft.
Probably because all the focus is on what the Giants do with their...

There's so much
old man : 4/11/2018 10:11 am : link
Opinion, conjecture, possibilities with the #2 pick, all else takes a back seat.
Be here the 24 hrs of posting after we are on the clock, and when we are commented out on the 1st rd pick, there'll be a ton of excitement on the available @34.
Because we know everyone (except 1) will be there at 2nd overall
est1986 : 4/11/2018 10:16 am : link
& we have no idea who will be there at 34th overall..

That was an era where our second round picks tended to be better than our first round picks.
I am VERY amped about the 2nd round pick
gmen9892 : 4/11/2018 10:21 am : link
Which should net a 1st round talent. The problem with the excitement for that pick is that there is just so much unknown about who is going to be there. And that pick is also going to change depending on what we do with the #2 pick.

But count me as one who is just as excited about the Round 2 pick as I am about the Round 1 pick (slightly less, but you get the point).
what would be an acceptable way
GiantsLaw : 4/11/2018 10:22 am : link

I'm excited about it

When I come to this site I wonder why there isn't more discussion about the 2nd rd pick.. For the last few months I've seen the same arguments about the same players with the same people just about every day.. Lol To each his own, I'm not judging or anything here but I thought I'd see more discussion on the 2nd or even mid round picks by now.. maybe I've missed it.

For me the draft drags out way too long.
Giant John : 4/11/2018 10:58 am : link
Should be done first weekend of April. I’m sick of the drama and speculation. Way overdone.
I am actually very excited about the 3rd round picks also
Jay on the Island : 4/11/2018 11:04 am : link
There are likely to be several offensive linemen available there. Freank Ragnow, Brian O'Neill, Geron Christian, Skyler Phillips, Austin Corbett, Wyatt Teller, Jamarco Jones, Joseph Noteboom, Brandon Parker, and Alex Cappa.

I would be thrilled if the Giants came out of this draft with OT Brian O'Neill and Frank Ragnow. I just have a feeling that Ragnow is going to be an outstanding center for whichever team drafts him.
I'm very excited
Knee of Theismann : 4/11/2018 11:27 am : link
There is so much "late first round talent" at OL, especially interior OL, we are bound to get a see one slip and grab a 1st round talent guy to start day 1 and continue to solidify this o-line.
Its much more difficult to talk about the pick when we have no idea
Brown Recluse : 4/11/2018 11:31 am : link
who will be available. I'm sure there is plenty of excitment though.

Two first round picks,
oldog : 4/12/2018 12:56 pm : link
in effect, not much difference between, say, 23rd, and 34th.
Terrel Thomas was another good 2nd round pick

Got hurt, but was a very good player for a short time there before his injury.
