and he's play has been as pedestrian as it has (juxtaposed against expectations for a first rounder), since he's having to learn a new position, with a new set of coaches (and a new scheme), since he continues to play with poor form and leverage, not to mention he supposedly quit on the team and didn't want to play in Week 17, plus how he was tied at the hip to Bobby Hart and beat writers said they isolated themselves from the rest of the team...I say draft somebody to compete with Wheeler and cut the guy loose after the draft.

I think more of us would be surprised if the light went on for him and he turned it all around this year, than if he continued to disappoint in all the above areas. I'm not looking forward to riding the wave with this guy again this year.

Are These Voluntary or Mandatory?

If mandatory, did he give a reason for not attending?

If not mandatory, don't players from "The U" all get together and do their own thing?

but, even odell, who is seeking a new contract and may or may not play in pre-season without one, was there, as was everyone else on the roster, except for flowers

not a great sign...has been offered an opportunity to compete for starting right tackle,(or guard), and should take it and run..plenty of time to find out if he makes it or not

has a lot of money still at stake, not the right way to go about things, imo

Voluntary - but I think for a guy like Flowers who has struggled on the field as he has and a guy who has made some negative waves in the locker room, it's kind of a bad look that he is the only guy not there. You have a new coach and staff here - this is your chance to get off on the right foot. Apparently it isn't that important to him.

Yeah - this is my thinking as well. I said on Monday that I'd wait to see if there was a good reason for his absence first. It happens - so, if there was a legitimate reason, I wasn't going to go nuts over him not being there.

But if there was a reason, I think the team would have let that out by now.

Seems like it's just a personal choice, which, to me, is a bad move for him.

He's not playing LT again any time soon. That's Solder's spot now.

AnnapolisMike : 4/11/2018 12:48 pm : link
But the guy has been a starter since day one of his rookie year. While he is probably never going to be an all-star, he is going to be a serviceable starter/backup in the NFL for years to come.

Ideally he would be at the team workouts. But his absence is not a big deal. My guess is he ends up having a decent contract year and gets a nice deal from someone next year.

Thought it was obvious but ill clarify, a

After 4 years as a successful RT you could assume they would try him again at LT and he would excel further.

Not true. He's not under contract for the next 8 years, so it's a huge stretch to say we'd be okay if he gets it. All it would mean is that the Giants would be in good position to try to negotiate his next contact, but what indications are there that he would want to sign with us, especially when he is the only player under contract not attending the minicamps?

I get what you're saying, I don't like to turn on a player who wears the Giants jersey, but the reality is that he's very rapidly approaching free agency, so it's do or die time for him as far as I'm concerned.

He thinks he's a starting LT and the Giants don't need one of those until his contact with us will have long expired.

For a guy that has struggled mightily, and is switching positions, you don't think this shows us something about where his head is at?

To me it says that he isn't serious about taking this final opportunity the reigns.

For the record I've been something of a Flowers apologist at times given that he has all the physical tools and he was young, but enough is enough. His ass should be there.

Not being here sure is funny since most donít want him here anyway. This guy has been the blame for almost everything wrong with the OL would you want to go play with a 3-13 teammate who all see you as a failure. This is his contract year these events are not mandatory would you not be more concerned about your future and not this teams.

If his not being here is the biggest problem we have going forward everyone should be jumping for joy. Iíve said it before Flowers and Apple are in no win situations everything they do will become major news mostly bad news. Maybe this is his way of possibly getting out of here or he just has decided Iíve given my all for three years but itís not enough fu-k them. Shit I donít know but until itís mandatory and he does not show up itís his call his life and right to choose. As far as I know he has always showed up in good shape letís see what happens once things become important.

True - I can understand how he might feel about it and it's definitely voluntary and his right to choose.

Having said that - he was clearly told he was going to have to compete for a starting spot - that he wasn't being handed one. In fact, his spot last year has already been taken from him.

Seems to me that sore feelings and all the best bet for this young man would be to realize he's playing for a contract year. Every single little thing he can do to get practice snaps and playing time will potentially pay him back in millions come free agency.

Why wouldn't he want to come in and do all he can do to compete?

This is absolutely not true. The coaches also have meetings - define their team's objectives, build relationships, introduce the playbook. There's a reason the NFL grants extra days for new coaches - and it isn't so there can be more time to work out. The meetings are important.

Lots of good opportunities to impress your boss if you want to.

Clearly he has a right to stay away, but it's not going to help him get off to a great start with his new coaches.

Guys are human to all he has heard is a very near bust top ten pick, lost his job to a vet who has been doing just about what he has been doing. He has played hurt we all know that he may never be a HOF but he is not as bad as many make him out to be. I still think in the best interest of both parties he be moved get a new start he just does not fit on this team. His not showing up could be his way of forcing something to happen or who knows.

Letís be honest he could also be saying Iím not good enough at LT for this team but that does not mean I need to become a RT. LT gets paid more than a RT he is going to get paid for this season if he plays RT, LT, OG or sits on the bench I can live with that. No LT is perfect but he is in most cases king of the bad LTís in the league. He has taken a stand only he knows why but he in truth has done nothing wrong.

"is completely right. It could be a family illness who knows. It is voluntary." but in this day and age of social media, the immediacy of communications, had Flowers wanted to endear himself to the new regime, all he had to do was send a text, IM, or whatever to the HC or, at the very least, his position coach, explaining that he had a family issue...but the silence only leads to conclusions that do not put him in a favorable light, especially given his attitude at the end of last season.

But the team gains nothing from cutting him now (or really even this year), but if they cut him in camp, they can point to a lot of things on why he's gone. Attitude being one - especially given some of the incidents from last season.

which is more than a lot of other bums on the roster the past few years (including the LT, willbeatty, that he was forced to replace day 1, and the blowhard geoffschwartz)

imo it'd be smart to try to continue to develop him and hope that he reaches his potential or at least becomes serviceable.

he is still very young and has had a revolving door of coaches

I even wonder what Solder would be like today if he was drafted by this team instead of being coached by the evil genius in NE

there could be a legit reason or not
micky : 4/12/2018 9:22 am : link
we dont know

Also, to my understanding there's phases to these "voluntary" workouts with first one focused on strength and conditioning as well as rehab work.

if he doesn't show in at least the 2nd phase, and not a legit reason for, then I'd say there's a problem especially with new system and position for him this season to learn. Normally in voluntary workouts there's no problem if there's already a system and coaching staff that had been in place for player not shows up..this year is different.

I'm no defender of Flowers, but it is curious
Diver_Down : 4/12/2018 9:24 am : link
that the Giants haven't mentioned a reason. Like Eli Apple is to Pat Leonard, Flowers is to Jordan Raanan. With him being the only player that hadn't shown up, I would have expected Jordan to dig. One can theorize that Flowers might have been told to stay away in the short term as he could be shopped during the draft. Any potential trade would fall through if Flowers can't pass a physical. If no trade partner is found, then he'll be welcomed back when the activities are mandatory. Just another theory.
The optics of this is very bad
PatersonPlank : 4/12/2018 9:27 am : link
Its not really the point of being there. Its the point of having a new coach and a new position, and still not coming. Regardless of anything else, if a player was committed to working hard to solidify his position in a new regime he would be here. If he doesn't care he won't. We've all had jobs where we were committed and where we weren't, so we have all been here.
Optics is a plural noun.
oldog : 4/12/2018 11:02 am : link
Hence it is better to say that the optics ARE bad. Otherwise it are bad optics to use poor grammar because it make it look like the opinion expressed were also not so insiteful.
