At least we don't have to worry about HBO's Hard Knocks 2018

Tony in Tampa : 4/11/2018 1:05 pm
To break up the draft speculation, I thought I'd remind those of you who do not want to have your team paraded through this circus. We are exempt from a mandatory appearance this year:

Teams that are eligible for Hard Knocks inclusion in 2018

» 49ers
» Broncos
» Browns
» Chargers
» Ravens
» Redskins

Yay, something I can NOT look forward to.

6 teams eligible for mandatory 'Hard Knocks' star turn - ( New Window )
the fact that its still mandatory is ridiculous

and if I was Mara i'd just take the fines if the Giants were ever "awarded" Hard Knocks.
I hope it's the Redskins

I think Dan Snyder would love to be in the spotlight.
I actually think the browns

Could be intriguing. Coming off a winless pathetic season drafting their franchise qb.
If the team was selected again ....

Do you think Pat would grease his hair back like Mac
if what team was selected again?

while it's not an option, I'd like to see a series with Chuckie back at the helm.
Niners the best story by far

You’d think they’ll be first choice if they don’t say no.
I don't get the playoff exclusion...
Dan in the Springs : 4/11/2018 2:16 pm : link
why would they want to exclude playoff teams, and why expand it to the past two years?

I mean at this point why not just call it a punishment and rebrand it to something like: "Your Team Sucks" by NFL films.
Why are so many folks against this?

Seems it would be cool to get an inside look at our beloved team.

I don't know if fans are against it - I'd be thrilled for the extra coverage. It's just that we must all know that nobody in the organization wants it, that it can be a distraction.

That's why it seems unfair to have the rules allow good teams to avoid it if they want to.

I think the distraction thing is over blown at this point. Sure some guys would play up to the camera some, but i don't think there would be anything to hurt team.

Has there ever been a case which a team suffered anything detrimental because of the show?
I'd like what little mystique is left in sports

to remain as such. The NFL is also oversaturated as it is - having the team I root for on the show would only make it worse.

Sorry for the grammar, I should really "preview" before posting....
Maybe I should say "might" be a distraction...
Dan in the Springs : 4/11/2018 5:21 pm : link
the central point remains, that the teams don't really want to do it. That's why you don't see any of the playoff teams "volunteering" for it.

The Giants could have certainly chosen to be on it for any number of years now. The fact that they haven't been should tell you all you need to know about the org's preferences.

What are the qualifications

Since any team can volunteer to be on any time, it's better to modify your question to "What are the qualifications to be forced on?"

The answer is in the article, but here's the summary:

The following criteria are used to determine if teams are eligible to be forced on the show:
1. Not a first year head coach.
2. Not made the playoffs the previous two years.
3. Not been on the show over the past 10 years.

The point is that any team who has had at least some success cannot be forced onto the show. If you miss the playoffs two years in a row and have the same coach, you can be forced on.

The Giants will be on the eligible list if they don't make the playoffs this year and they retain Shurmur.
