My 2018 "fearless" Giants Draft ....

Manny in CA : 4/11/2018 2:15 pm

The Giants need a “tweek” of the defense and over-all the offense (especially the offensive line, which is a mess.). This year’s draft position is a Golden opportunity to solidify the functional base that will let them compete at the highest levels for the next decade.

With that in mind, consider this mock draft ….

Giants trade #2 over-all to the Browns for their #4 over-all, their 2nd Round pick (#33) and their #1 2019 pick. (Assuring the Browns get the very best two best players in this draft and the Giants securing two top tier players this year and one the next )

1st round (#4 0ver all), Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson; 6’5” , 329
Next to Barkley, best player on the entire board

2nd round (#33 over-all), UTEP guard Will Hernandez; 6’3”, 330
Powerful brute for RG; next Snee ?

2nd round (#34 over-all), Arkansas center Frank Ragnow; 6’5”, 319
Best center in college football

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9uMW2mLf4U

3rd round (#66 overall), Pittsburg wide receiver Jester Weah; 6’3”, 210
Ranked 2nd in nation in yards/cacth - 24.4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFKj5ljN9fY

3rd round (#69 overall), Texas corner “Hollywood” Holton Hill; 6’3”, 205
Big ball hawk. Three interceptions for TDs. Can handle the big receivers that the NFL features.

4th round (#104 overall), USC DE Rasheem Green: 6’5” 280
Battled through injuries in 2017 to post 43 tackles, 12.t tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Big guy, ideal for 3-4.

5th round (#130 overall) RB Sony Michel Georgia 5’11” 222
Big framed running back with speed

Love Michel in the fifth. Sounds likely.
Why are the Browns doing the trade?
The Dude : 4/11/2018 2:25 pm : link
They can stay at 4 and get barkley no?

Any other trade partners the giants trade with will definitely being taking a QB...and the Jets @ 3 are as well. So the Browns still get Barkley.

I can't see the Browns sinking their 2nd rounder AND a future first for the #2 / Barkley. They can sit at 4 keep both those picks and take the best defensive player in the draft (apparently in the last few years as well) Chubb (in the event that Barkleys taken @ 2)

Not downplaying OPs mock by the way..just thinking it in terms if i'm the Browns. I think you keep your next years 1st (browns will be better but not elite) and the 2nd rounder and possibly STILL get barkley @ 4...and if barkley goes #2, you kept those picks i mentioned and take Chubb.

If the giants are trading out of 2 i think it will be for a QB needy team and it will be quite a haul.

Despite what "everybody" is saying ...
Manny in CA : 4/11/2018 3:13 pm : link

I don't think the Browns go for a QB, if they trade with the Giants (they just got Pro Bowl QB Taylor).

They go for Bradley & Chubb.- the best offensive & defensive players in the draft. Bradley makes ANY QB 50% better. Chubb joins with Garrett - to create the very best young pass rushing DE combo in the NFL.

If they don't want to give us their #1 next year (equivalent to this year's #2), that's OK we'll take their 2019 #2.
...
BleedBlue : 4/11/2018 3:47 pm : link
there is so much embarrassment on this post.

for starters, browns wont make this deal and especially not for that ransom, they can get barkley at 4. secondly michel...zero chance he is there in the 5th round. zero chance we go OL with first three picks.
manny thinks bradley chubb is two people, im assuming he meant barkley and chubb.
browns are going QB at 1 and barkley at 4 if there, if not they go chubb
Sony Michel in Round 5, R. Green in round 4

Wow. Just wow. Gettleman is a genius. Able to draft players who were drafted 4 rounds earlier by other teams.

Don't know if your draft is "fearless"

but it's certainly senseless.
Saquon Barkley - RB ..
Manny in CA : 4/11/2018 5:11 pm : link

Bradley Chubb - the DE.

CBS has Michel, 5th best RB. I like Royce Freeman and even Bo Scarbrough; guys who can hit the line hard.

About the Browns ....

Why wouldn't you go for the best two players on the board, if you had a chance ? It wouldn't "cost the farm" (like the Giants did for Eli, and many other examples).

I'm not sure if there has been any other team in the history of the NFL that has ever had that opportunity.

(This possibility has been discussed by the media and here, nothing new).

Michel..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/11/2018 5:14 pm : link
might be listed as the 5th best back, not the 5th round back!!

Nothing better than a completely unrealistic pick and some rambling shit in a follow-up post.
This is completely nonsensical.
Mike from Ohio : 4/11/2018 5:34 pm : link
Unrealistic trade, followed by poor selections, followed by late round grabs of guys who will be off the board several round earlier.

How about this draft? The Giants acquire the Browns first and fourth overall picks for Ereck Flowers. Then they get the Jet's 3rd overall pick for Eli Apple.

With the first four picks in the draft, the Giants select 1) The re-animated, 25 year old Johnny Unitas; 2) A 25 year old Jim Brown; 3) 22 year old Lawrence Taylor; and at 4) Spiderman.

Taking the qb or any player at two and eschewing this theory that quantity is better than quality is fearless.

Taking Sony Michel 2-3 rounds later than he's projected to go would pretty much be the exact opposite of "fearless" - but sadly, I've seen much worse than this.
The Browns will never do that deal
Torrag : 4/11/2018 7:22 pm : link
Be somewhat reaistic in your trades.
Browns come away with the Darnold and Barkley
GFAN52 : 4/11/2018 7:29 pm : link
with no trade needed.
How valid is this mock ? ....
Manny in CA : 4/11/2018 9:23 pm : link

I used CBS Sports. Which has middle-of-the-road reliable over the last few years ...

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospect-rankings/

I used it as an overall guide, also factoring in need and just a bit of wishful thinking, but not much. The first number is our over-all draft position, (with trade) the 2nd the CBS ranking of all players, regardless of position ranking . The third column is the difference (valid factor)

Nelson, #4, #6, (-2)
Hernandez #33, #24 (+10)
Ragnow . #34, #33 (+1)
Weah . #66, #131 (-65)
Hill #69 . #69, #42 . (+42)
Green . #104, #103 (+1)
Michel . #103, #53 (+50)

So, just looking at the comparison numbers of draft position vs. quality, I'd say that only Michel & Weah and Hill are is real "reaches". But, as we all know, the draft is full of surprises and individual team needs (for each team) is a crucial factor.

Lol.

Let me help you out, Manny...and I can't address all the completely unrealistic stuff in one post, but...

If CBS has Michel at #53 overall, that means they project him as a 2nd rounder. There are others that believe Michel will go in the first round. I believe that's a low ranking for Michel. He will be a top 50 pick. In any case, unless he takes a fireworks safety course from JPP between now and the draft, there is zero chance, and I mean ZILCH, ZIPPO chance, that he makes it past the first 75 picks. He'll more than likely be gone in the top 50 picks, which would be by Dallas' pick in the 2nd round.

Will Hernandez is likely a first rounder, IMO.

You probably took Holton Hill too early. Rasheem Green also won't make it past the third round.

That's called wishful thinking

Correction - my point differential for Hill is +27.

About Hernandez, I really like him. He might be worth trading up a bit, even if his value is only 10 points, by this ranking.

To Fatman: No disrespect to you, honest - tell me your working definition of a "reach"

Thank you, gentlemen ...
Manny in CA : 4/12/2018 12:49 am : link

I appreciate every bit of kindness and forbearance that I get around here. Having said that, recall the old saying - "out of the mouths of babes and fools" ....

And no, I haven't applied for the GM job, but maybe you've just inspired me to go for it. (I certainly can't do worse than the Vikings missing their draft pick turn in 2003)

Peace !

A reach means you drafted him before he should have been drafted. A steal is when you get some lower than when he was expected. So since Michel is projected as a second rounder and you are projecting to us in the 5th round he would be the exact opposite of a reach. He would be a huge steal in the 5th round.

1-- Because the Browns can already get the number 1 QB in the draft THIS year along with more-than-likely getting the best player in the draft THIS year. The Giants are taking a QB or trading it for another team to take a QB.

2-- If they make the trade you suggest while not taking a QB- then they've just taken a risk that for all the good players they have they won't have a competent QB moving toward the future. It's the most important position on the field.

3-- Hate to break it to you but the QB's are getting drafted 1-2-3. In THIS draft the Browns will solidify the future of their QB situation ALONG WITH getting what they feel is the best player in the draft ALONG WITH keeping their other extremely PRIME draft picks.

Honestly..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/12/2018 8:02 am : link
if this has to be explained to you, there's not a reason in Hell you should be doing mock drafts:

Quote:
To Fatman: No disrespect to you, honest - tell me your working definition of a "reach"

I'm not sure the difference between a working definition and a regular one, but a reach would be taking a player much higher than he's expecting to go. EJ Manuel was a reach since many experts had him as a 3rd round QB and he was selected in the first round.

Sony Michel is widely speculated in almost every mock draft to be selected in rounds 1 or 2. You somehow think he's a 5th rounder, and then are calling him a reach.

The fact this has to be explained to an adult football fan is mind-boggling to me.
How
NJGiantFan84 : 4/12/2018 11:01 am : link
is this mock draft "fearless?" It actually seems more safe than anything. A fearless draft, to me, means taking gambles and not being fearful of failure. Trading down, taking a safe bet to be an NFL player doesn't seem that fearless to me. Taking a QB at two or taking Barkley at 2 would be more fearless than anything else, IMHO.
Thanks Amptoft ...
Manny in CA : 4/12/2018 12:18 pm : link

I don't ever mind being corrected. I bring up the Browns trade scenario because it's been speculated about before, but if "it's not in the cards", OK.

As far as the Giants (only team I care about), I advocate building a strong foundation first - the O-line.

As far as QBs, I don't see any of this draft class standing head-and-shoulders over Webb (except maybe Rudolf who is not as highly rated as the others)

GuzzaBlue : 4/12/2018 1:30 pm : link
I like first three players taken and in part, like the theory itself, but I think this would have been best suited before the Giants signed Soldier and Omameh. Not to say we are good on the line now, but I would rather spend at least one other of those first three picks on another position. You would still get similar similar results in terms of fixing the line and adding then also adding a premier talent, say...Barkely/Chubb

In this draft scenario, the Giants would be going all-in for Eli's last few years. If that's the case, Barkely is the pick at 2 or 4 and then followed by Hernandez, Ragnow/Price. Something along those lines I would probably sign up for now even if we don't get a QB. Big fan of Hernandez and Price and who doesn't like Barkely even if you feel the value isn't there.

I believe in building the O-line too. Actually just building from the line out in general (including the DL). Although, we now have a GM that has a knack for finding OL either later in the draft or UDFA. We should use that as our advantage and see if he can find a guy or two without utilizing our top resources.
