Big news from the Mets: Travis d'Arnaud has a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow. He could need Tommy John surgery. He's on the DL, and Tomas Nido is up.

#Mets promoted Nido to replace d'Arnaud (elbow). I wonder if that is about Nido being on 40-man roster because in spring I sensed NYM folks liked how Lobaton handled the pitchers, plus that his LH bat offered some diversification in a catching platoon.
This is a good opportunity to upgrade - TDA just never panned out Â
not saying they need to make a move, Plawecki may be that upgrade. Heck, Nido's defense is probably an upgrade maybe they get lucky and he unexpectedly hits a little the way Jesus Flores did a few years back for the Nats.
TDA is always on the DL. It was a risk going into camp with just him and Plawecki. Not the end of the world though. Plawecki and Nido will get a shot here and it won't be too hard to trade for a catcher later on if needed.
And was actually fairly healthy... he also was our best hitter in spring training overall. We’ll never see a fully healthy roster. Big blow. Plawecki better not fuck this up.
I am not seeing it as a huge setback for the team, however.
Let's not read too much into this as far as team health is concerned, though I do share the trepidation. The Mets can look pretty good when healthy and it is scary to think about a repeat of last season.
However, I do see a difference this year, especially at the manager position and the more creative approach to pitching and base running.
his arm was such a problem behind the plate. He might be the worst at throwing runners out and couple that with a sub par pitching staff in terms of holding runners on.
If Nido or Lobaton can throw I don't think its a big loss at all. If we had to lose something he is easiest to replace IMO.
sucks for him obviously but teams ran on us like nobody's business.
May be the only catcher WORSE than TDA. I’d rather TDA missing a ligament than Montero
You can get Realmuto for less than Gimenez, why give up Gimenez +?
If his back checks out and he costs LESS than Gimenez sign me the hell up. The guy is a top 3 catcher if healthy and under control next year too.
I don't see how he would be had for less than Gimenez. Realmuto is only 27 and one of the best catchers in baseball. He is also under team control until 2020 I believe.
I'm sure this was unintentional ----- but when you start a non football thread -- you need to select non-football thread at the top of the thread stating window -- otherwise it will appear on the football thread page - as this does. The football thread page is reserved for football threads only
I don't remember him ever being good at throwing runners out. He was always "Bat makes up for defensive/pitching weaknesses" except his bat never matched projections.

And lets not forget that he is good a "framing" pitches.
Travis just can't stay healthy. Ever. What can you do...
Plawecki just became much more important.
Surprised it took until April 11th.

Do something
He is on a 1yr/$6.5M deal, which is pretty cheap. Wonder what it would cost in the way of prospects.
He still can not throw anyone out, and Keith had pointed out several times that the long loopy swing was still not going away.
That said, they have to find a serviceable option to go along with Plaw.

This was my first thought too. I think you're right.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Except he has a bad back. So I would not give up a ton for him
Miguel Montero is sitting on the DFA market right now...
