NFT: Thursday Yankees talk

Greg from LI : 4/12/2018 10:52 am
With Friday being the service time cutoff for this year, I have to think Torres will be up very soon for either Wade or Andujar. Those guys are a combined 6-60. SSS and all, but including last year Wade is now .141/.215/.212 in 85 MLB ABs.

Hicks might start tonight.

Clint Frazier should make his Scranton debut in the next few days. Be nice to get him back in the mix.
Definitely some concern starting to creep in
Kyle in NY : 4/12/2018 11:03 am : link
regarding Tyler Wade. Not really showing signs of making adjustments to MLB pitching.

I do worry about Andujar's pitch selection. He's always been a bit of a hacker with low walk rates, though he doesn't strike out all that much either. But he's looked jumpy at the plate in the early going. I still believe in his talent, but I wouldn't mind see him go back down to AAA and have Torres replace him. Going back down with some directions and a better idea of what adjustments to make could be good for him.
I know it is early

but Torres has had a strong start at AAA. Hitting .333 with a HR and a triple
Wade

had a nice spring too ,Very disappointing
I'm still a Wade believer.

Fun basebrawl last night.
Wade

will get going,
Yes...
BC Eagles94 : 4/12/2018 11:29 am : link
With an Austin suspension coming (no idea how many games)...Walker will be playing all 1B. As our other back-up options (McKinney and even Drury) are on DL. So bringing up Torres is starting to make more and more sense. As we may not want Andujar and Wade playing very day, with Torreyes mixed in. Andujar and Wade aren;t doing much at the plate. But the big question is when can Torres be brought up to delay is FA another year? Because if it is still a few days away...you gotta think Yanks wait until at least then to bring him up. We're still not desperate for another IF, but can certainly use one.
Just looked up my own question...
BC Eagles94 : 4/12/2018 11:34 am : link
And Torres can come up April 14th and delay his FA an extra year. So you have to think Yanks will at least make due without him for the next two games. Then April 14th (Saturday) he can be an option, particularly if Austin is still suspended.
In the meantime...
BC Eagles94 : 4/12/2018 11:36 am : link
for the next two games, if necessary as maybe Austin can appeal and delay suspension, the Yanks can always DFA Shayne Robinson...now that Aaron Hicks is returning from DL today. And add another IF to 40 man and bring him up.
I'm not burying Wade for good
Greg from LI : 4/12/2018 11:47 am : link
But it's looking quite a bit as if he isn't ready to contribute at the MLB level yet. You can't keep putting him in the lineup much longer.

He's an absolute stud. He was out almost a full year, so the ST results should be taken with a grain of salt. He needed to get back up and running.

He will be a perfect, and I mean perfect fit for this lineup. Even if he bats at the bottom of the order, his contact skills and ability to spray over the entire field will balance out the power and strikeouts. Also, is patient which will add another OBP bat to the lineup.

This team also needs a little spark. Maybe last night's brawl is it, we'll see. Wade isn't cutting it and Andujar looks like he still needs some seasoning.
cant wait for torres..
2cents : 4/12/2018 12:00 pm : link
and im not worried about wade and andujar, think theyre both super talented but just might be getting asked a little to much of at the moment.

i am more concerned with getting some of these guys healthy, Drury, McKinney and the china doll himself, Greg Bird.

Really just need 1 of these guys (between torres and the injuries) to relieve some pressure in the infield. From there they can start to pick their spots a bit more with Wade and Andujar to get them more comfortable and start progressing again.
Funny how it works- in the spring we were so loaded in the OF
Stu11 : 4/12/2018 12:02 pm : link
now less than 2 weeks into the season its like a MASH unit and we're starting guys like Jace Peterson and Shane Robinson
Well, you won't see Robinson now that Hicks is back
Greg from LI : 4/12/2018 12:06 pm : link
And, assuming no setbacks, Frazier would be the first man up if there's another injury.

Oh I know Greg its just crazy how we were worried about getting guys enough reps in the OF and less than 2 weeks into the season and even the AAA depth (McKinney) are on the DL.

Just FYI, the OP answered the service time question in his first sentence
Injuries always surprise, but some trends are disturbing. Hicks in
Victor in CT : 4/12/2018 12:53 pm : link
particular is going down an Ellsbury-an path. Always something. Gives us that tease where he is really impactful, then BAM, some fucking nag injury and he out. 10 days here, 15 there. Bird now in his 3rd straight year of long term DL.

I've never been overly enthusiastic on Wade. I think he's a utility guy at best. And his bat has been weaker than I thought.

I like Andujar, and he stung one last night, unfortunately became a DP. He's got a live bat. He may still come around, and they need him here now. He has a chance to "Wally Pipp" Drury. Speaking of whom, the lack of findings in his testing is a bit disturbing. I wonder what it could be? I also wish he (and Bird) would have said something when their respective issues first occured.

Need a big game from Gray tonight. It would be a nice fuck you to the Bosawx to come back and win this series after the shellacking they took in the opener.

had really high hopes for Wade. He had a great spring. However, he has not done anything this season. Is he a AAAA player? I'm not sure once Torres comes up and if/when Drury comes back will there be a spot for Wade on the MLB roster. It would benefit him to go down and get reps. BTW, Drury had some test I believe on Monday. Curious that we have not heard anything yet.

And quite frankly neither does Andujar. I think Andujar's defense has been better than advertised, also.

Wade's defense is worth keeping on the team. How about they give him a couple months. Half the team isn't hitting, so he is not the only one.
Wade is still only 23
Greg from LI : 4/12/2018 1:04 pm : link
He only played in 85 games in Scranton last year, which was his first time in AAA, and he's shown some promise as a hitter in the minors. It's way too soon to write him off for good. I do think he's overmatched in MLB right now, though.
Wade hasn't played himself out of a job
RasputinPrime : 4/12/2018 1:08 pm : link
but Andujar needs reps he may not get once we get healthy. Good problems to have.
Can someone explain

Yeah I saw him hit in AAA, he just rips doubles all day. I think he will be fine also, as well as Andujar.

...should be taken with a healthy dose of "let's wait and see". The weather has been more suited to the Inuit nation of the Arctic than to MLB players who had been basking in the Fla. sun for the previous 6+ weeks. We'll know a lot more once the northern half of the country gets some decent warmth.

Hey, it's the second week of April and the Yanks are 1.5 games out of the wild card! With only five months to go, they'll have to pick up .3 of a game per month on the rest of the pack just to make the playoffs! Has that ever been done in the history of baseball?

:-)
