happen.
Is it a coffee or cigarette run?

And who's going?
0% chance he takes the Knicks job
elisha2014 : 4/12/2018 1:42 pm : link
guy is building a northeastern Duke - has two titles under his belt and can be the face of college hoops for the next 20+ years.

Why the fuck would he want to coach the Knicks?
Why would he do this?
BigBlue2112 : 4/12/2018 1:44 pm : link
I love the knicks but there's no way I'd leave Nova for to coach the blue and orange. He's very happy there. Leave the top of the NCAA to join the bottom of the NBA and deal with the pressure of NY? No thanks.

Yep. The Knicks are the Cleveland Browns of the NBA.

I doubt he leaves, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
It's worth the shot from the Knicks perspective.
Mike from SI : 4/12/2018 1:47 pm : link
Like others have said, I doubt he leaves. The only upside nobody has mentioned is that if you're the guy who finally wins here, you're a legend. But if I were him I'd stay put.
I can see him leaving for the NBA, but not the Knicks job.
bceagle05 : 4/12/2018 1:49 pm : link
I'd love to be proven wrong though. Billy Donovan won a couple of titles at Florida and went to the NBA. Brad Stevens could've coached anywhere in college basketball and been the next Coach K, but he left, too. Jay's 56 years old - it's possible he wants to take his chances at the next level.
Seriously doubt that would ever happen

Probably a lot of $$ that Nova would pay.
already a thread

where this is being discussed. And so far he's just one of several rumored names. They haven't even scheduled a single interview with anyone yet.
why leave Nova for the Knicks when he can probably
Victor in CT : 4/12/2018 2:01 pm : link
get an NBA job when he wants it?
Money and Prestige
TyreeHelmet : 4/12/2018 2:04 pm : link
He’s “only” getting about 2.5 mill currently. What if the Knicks offered 5 years 50 million? No chance Nova can match that and that’s a lot of cash to turn down. And if he turns around the Knicks? That’s a ton of prestige. Year 1 is also a freebie year with KPs injury.

I don’t think it’s as big of a long shot as people think.
How
DanMetroMan : 4/12/2018 2:05 pm : link
long before Pitino/Calipari float their names and then deny it?
Anything's possible.
bceagle05 : 4/12/2018 2:06 pm : link
The Knicks got big name coaches like Larry Brown and Mike D'Antoni when they had no young talent, no draft picks, no cap space, and James Dolan's grubby little hands in every aspect of the operation.

It's possible this job is viewed in a slightly better light than it has been. Dolan's distanced himself, Mills and Perry want to rebuild (i.e., good job security), the Knicks have some good young pieces and draft picks going forward, as well as cap space in 2019. I doubt it's enough to pry Wright out of Villanova, but I'm guessing some of these top candidates have legit interest.
Roll out the Dolan$$$

College coaches make a shit ton of sneaker money.
Heisenberg : 4/12/2018 2:14 pm : link
So, the 2.5 number is low on the estimate of what he brings home.

But Horny made 5M a year. Pop makes 11M. Maybe somewhere in between and we get Wright's attn?
I am not seeing...

the Knicks a an attractive destination for a guy like Wright...
As I said, I doubt Wright leaves his dynastic program to work for

Dolan. But as Phil showed, Dolan's pockets are pretty goddamn deep.
I doubt he takes the job.
GiantFilthy : 4/12/2018 2:24 pm : link
As fans though, you guys should at least find a tiny bit of joy that the organization is doing the right thing by going after him and not immediately flipping through the rolodex of retreads.
My memory is fuzzy but Jay Wright did say on a Podcast
LawrenceTaylor56 : 4/12/2018 2:28 pm : link
he would leave to go to the NBA to coach the Knicks
76ers
Pete44 : 4/12/2018 2:31 pm : link
I can see Jay Wright waiting for that job, only a matter of time before the Sixers move on from Brett Brown.

Why would the Sixers move on from Brett brown...

And Jay Wright called the Knicks a dream nba job, straight out of his mouth

Now do I think he leaves nova? No
I think the chances are slim
Jay on the Island : 4/12/2018 2:44 pm : link
but if Dolan offers Wright 9-10 million per season he might bite. He could always cash in and go back to college in a few years if things don't go well.

+1.
Worst that happens, he says NO.
He knows today's kids, how to deal with them, from the last 5 years of players forward. He and a GM with a game plan in sync to build and develop a team and their back. Look at Philly, Boston. Several years in the making, but it can be significantly shorted with a small amount of good fortune(long overdue).
He's a good coach
MetsAreBack : 4/12/2018 3:29 pm : link
but coaches dont win championships in the NBA. Talent does... and the Knicks dont have close to enough talent yet for it to be worth hiring a big name coach.

But Dolan knows this - hence this continues to be an offseason publicity stunt to get some headlines and sell season tickets.

So the Knicks shouldn’t try to find the best coach available? You’re actually giving them shit for this?

It is based on the fact that coaches shelf lives usually have an expiration date and Brown has been there a long time. Eventually, the Sixers are going to want a coach that gets them to the finals and beyond.
Would rather Wright continue to coach my college team
The_Boss : 4/12/2018 4:09 pm : link
than my dysfunctional pro team. He's proven already to be one of the best coaches in the country at the collegiate level, if not the best. It's hard to win in the NBA without players you've recruited. Just ask Nick Saban how different the NFL is without the #1 recruiting classes he's accustomed to at Tuscaloosa. Plus, I think he can make just as much (if not more) money at Villanova.

In addition, the positive culture at Villanova couldn't be any more opposite than dealing with all the toxic bullshit which has surrounded the Knicks for the last 17 years or so.

All I said is its a publicity stunt. Just like Phil Jackson was.

Teams are built through the draft. Then, when you have enough talent to compete - that is when you go after guys like Jay Wright.

Doing it now... with KP out most of next year... wreaks of desperation to generate headlines and sell more tickets.

But its not my money and i'm not a Knicks season ticket holder that ends up paying more money for tickets because of moves like this... so have at it.
I kind of view Wright in the same line as Stevens.
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/12/2018 5:57 pm : link
Stevens coached that team from nothing. They didn't bring him in as the missing piece.
I'm not normally big on college guys
Dave on the UWS : 4/12/2018 6:24 pm : link
but there will be so many young guys to develop it makes sense to go this route.
Right move to
TommyWiseau : 4/13/2018 1:09 am : link
go after Wright although I think there is a slim chance he bounces for New York. Dolan would have to offer 10+ mil a year. Either way, Wright will benefit just by meeting with the knicks. Villanova will either up his salary or the Knicks will get him for an insane amount of money.
The more
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 9:53 am : link
I read about stackhouse and listen to him talk about his philosophy the more I want him as head coach
I think..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/13/2018 9:56 am : link
Wright wants his legacy to stay in the NCAA and at Villanova.

Don't tarnish the Bucknell shine!!!
The worst
Jon in NYC : 4/13/2018 9:57 am : link
case for Wright is he goes the Saban route and goes back to school if he really flames out. But I suspect he'd adapt pretty well.
If Wright wants to get as
Metnut : 4/13/2018 10:01 am : link
rich as possible, his best option is to take a 5yr/$50M type of offer from the Knicks. If he gets fired from the Knicks, he'll still collect the balance owed and be able to get another monster offer from an NCAA school. If he does great with the Knicks, then even better.

That's a good point.. then again the Celtics had a fuckload of #1 picks in upcoming drafts where it made sense to bring in someone like Stevens (who signed for under $4 million/year by the way). The Knicks to my knowledge dont have any upcoming #1s aside from their own and will be picking 9th most likely this year.

But I agree, Celtics theoretically did have an initial year there where Stevens managed a really bad roster.

It seems like odd timing for this. He coached them through the Process and kept the youngsters engaged. Their first year with a team intact and he took them to 50 wins and the 3rd seed. I don't think they'll be looking to get rid of him any time soon...
