NFT: Knicks Talk 4/13

Jon in NYC : 4/13/2018 10:13 am
Steve Clifford was just fired by the Hornets. I always thought he was a good coach. Is this just a case of new ownership wanting their guy?

Current list of potential candidates:

Stackhouse
Wright
JVG
Jackson
Fizdale
Blatt

Anyone I'm missing?
I would scratch off jackson

Mills said he talked to the warriors owners on advice about their coaching search, dont think they have a ringing endorsement

Thank god.

He was the one guy that I really would have been against.

After revitalizing a moribund franchise with two playoff appearances in his first three seasons as coach, Charlotte missed the playoffs the past two seasons under Clifford. His NBA coaching peers view him as a strong tactical coach with an innate ability to build strong relationships with his players.

Charlotte's All-Star guard Kemba Walker recently said of Clifford, "He's been great from day one. He's been a great coach for me, very motivational. He got me to another level. I just love him as a coach, as a person. He's been special or me in my career."

The more I read and listen to stackhouse the more I want him..

Reading between the lines
bceagle05 : 4/13/2018 10:25 am : link
the Knicks seem to be on the analytics bandwagon, so they probably want the coach to be more of a front office puppet. I'd bet their leaning toward Stackhouse, unless Jay Wright can be swayed.
I want Fiz or Stack
Heisenberg : 4/13/2018 10:26 am : link

NYG16 - I am intrigued but probably know < than you on Stack. Can you summarize/share what you've read on him?
I know who I definitely do not want
Greg from LI : 4/13/2018 10:30 am : link
And that's Jackson or Van Quitter.

Fizdale? Eh.

I'd be optimistic with Stackhouse, Blatt, or Wright.
It's
Jon in NYC : 4/13/2018 10:31 am : link
a massive jump for Stackhouse going from G League coach to NBA head coach in the biggest media market in the world. I wonder if he'd sign on as an associate head coach role.
Yeah
BTNasty : 4/13/2018 10:32 am : link
Stackhouse intrigues me too but I don't know too much about him either. I just know I don't want one of these old retreads that has already failed in multiple spots. Sounds like Mills and Perry don't want that either but we will see.
From what I have read
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 10:36 am : link
Defenaive philosophy. Hard nosed, tough cosch..like to work with young playera..

Help build and develop the bench job for toronto...

When he was with new Jersey avery Johnson used to let him draw up plays and be almost player-coach...

He wants to keep learning and willing to learn.

He is young could be your coach for the next 10 to 15 years..
meh
Stu11 : 4/13/2018 10:36 am : link
we've had 11 coaches since Van Gundy quit in '02. Rinse wash repeat...hopefully Frank Develops, Porzi comes back close to himself and we land a quality player in this draft. Honestly we've chewed up and spit out coaches with regularity.
Stack also played in Detroit while Perry was there
bceagle05 : 4/13/2018 10:38 am : link
and supposedly interviewed for the Knicks HC gig two years ago (I don't remember that) - I'm sure Mills asked most of the questions while Phil was sleeping.

The problem is the executives..

After van gundy, they went with Chaney rather than thibs..

The hiring of larry brown was colossal failure because he wanted more power...

Dantoni wanted a point guard instead the built a front line..

Woodson was successful then they hired phil..

Phil couldn't get Kerr so he went with puppets instead of good coaches

I am only interested in those 3 as well as far as the names that have been linked. Blatt scares me even though he didn't get a fair shake in Cleveland. Perry seemed to emphasize communication and being able to relate to today's players and I'm not sure if Blatt has the personality to deal with these NBA guys like he did overseas.

what's funny is that I don't really have any regrets about letting go of any of them. Most of them sucked. And the ones that didn't (e.g. Dantoni) wouldn't necessarily be good fits for a rebuild.
Stack
Pete44 : 4/13/2018 10:42 am : link
Stack is a candidate for Charlotte and Orlando as well.
I won't hold Cleveland against Blatt
Greg from LI : 4/13/2018 10:42 am : link
He was hired to be a teacher for a young team and was blindsided by Hurricane Lebron.
Blatt was ousted because he didn't kiss lebrons ass
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 10:44 am : link
Lebron also wanted spielstra fired and riley told him to kick rocks
I'll keep saying this.
LawrenceTaylor56 : 4/13/2018 10:45 am : link
Give me Nick Nurse from Toronto. He's the guy I want. Not Stack.

No thanks to JVG or Mark Jackson. God no.
See link
BTNasty : 4/13/2018 10:52 am : link
Found a decent article with some snippets about some possible candidates. It's from a Magic beat writer so the names all have ties to them but I'm sure these guys are all on the Knicks radar as well.

Meant to say I think Clifford is going to make a strong case if they bring him in for an interview which I'm sure they will. Sounds like he checks most of the boxes for what the front office is looking for but who the hell knows honestly with this team
Will say this
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 10:58 am : link
If Knicks want stack they better move quick because I am sure jordan has his eyes on being a north Carolina guy to coach his team
Clifford would be a good hire.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/13/2018 10:59 am : link
NYK connections too.
My list (in no particular order):
Anakim : 4/13/2018 11:05 am : link
Wright
JVG
Clifford
Fizdale
Blatt
Clifford
Pete44 : 4/13/2018 11:09 am : link
Clifford has some health issues, he might want to take some time off. He was suffering from sleep depravation or something that caused terrible headaches.
JVG
Pete44 : 4/13/2018 11:11 am : link
Personally, I think it is time to bring JVG back.

Stephen A Smith is a windbag, but he makes a point that the Knicks need a coach that changes the culture. The issue is that he has the wrong guy in Mark Jackson.

JVG will bring back some respectability and credibility.

Also, he has been coaching a G League select team and has changed some of his offensive philosophies to the modern game.
Anak
LawrenceTaylor56 : 4/13/2018 11:11 am : link
why do you have JVG on your list? Guy hasn't coached in the NBA in over a decade. He quit on the Knicks. I would hate this hire.

It's a typical name recognition only type move only the Knicks make.
I have nothing against van gundy
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/13/2018 11:16 am : link
I'd love it a lot more than Jackson, but why try to force a guy back into the game when he's been very happy in unofficial retirement? It doesn't seem like he's got an actual desire to do the job again. The same reasons he quit decades ago are still in play.

For me I want a young guy
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 11:17 am : link
That learns and builds as this young team learns and builds..

You hire van gundy, what is stopping him from quitting again in 5 years?
And he would most likely bring jackson with him
nygiants16 : 4/13/2018 11:18 am : link
And jackson would most likely take over when van gundy is done

he recently coached a bunch of scrubs in the FIBA world cup (whatever that is). That may indicate an interest on his part to get back in the game. That said, I'd prefer someone who is both younger and has more direct experience in today's game.
Yeah
BTNasty : 4/13/2018 11:23 am : link
Van Gundy would be awful. He's a vet coach, not a guy you bring in to develop young players. I have a feeling they are gonna move fast on someone (Stackhouse?) which is why they wasted no time in canning Hornacek.

Here's some good points on Stack from another board:

Some notes from the Podcast

- Stackhouse had to play a lot of 4 in college, so even though he was a star/very good level player, he had to bust his ass to adjust to playing 3/SG in the NBA to a degree, so he's got a grinder mentality that other greats might not always have. Also, though he had a really solid peak and good/great for 9 years, he played another 9 years at varying levels of being a "role player". So I think that informs his mindset and coaching ability as well.

- Stack is a legitimately tough guy who doesn't back down and I can see that translating as a coach.

- He said I'd run the team as a "benevolent dictator". He'd be there for players, do anything for them, but when he asks you to do something, he's the coach.

- Final point. Stackhouse has a chip on his shoulder about guys who got to an AS game and he didn't and I believe that just missing an NBA championship a couple of times (Detroit, Mavs) gets to him, though it didn't come up in the podcast.

- Stack will coach with an attitude and push himself and the team

- "Stackhouse is a coach that you can call 12 am at night and practice on shooting.

Norm Powell had a rough time getting back into the lineup. He called up Stackhouse to help him out. There is a scene in Open Gym where Norm is shooting with Stackhouse.

There was only 1 gleague player back from last year. This year Stackhouse had a totally different roster. He managed to develop his players back to the G league finals again"

Yes, I recall him talking about that on a podcast with Zach Lowe. The hours these guys put in is crazy.
Loved JVG
Jim in Fairfax : 4/13/2018 11:57 am : link
But heís been out of the game too long, and itís changed a lot. Maybe he can change his system/style for the modern game, but do we really want to gamble that he can coach effectively in todayís NBA? Or that he he even knows he need to change?
Stackhouse is the guy I want too
djm : 4/13/2018 12:27 pm : link
Rivers...maybe...but a Rivers Dolan marriage seems likely to end badly but that's just a gut feeling.
Definitely don't want Doc Rivers either
Greg from LI : 4/13/2018 12:29 pm : link
Bad coach who lucked his way into a title with Ainge's trades to bring in Allen and Garnett, plus Thibodeau's defensive acumen. He'd also probably insist on bringing in his charity case son, too.
Luckily LAC said it's keeping Doc.
bceagle05 : 4/13/2018 12:55 pm : link
Austin may be your charity case, but he's Phil Jackson's ideal triangle guard.
Supposedly

Doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet. I could easily see the Knicks trading for Doc.
If you listened to their presser last year
Phil in LA : 4/13/2018 1:36 pm : link
they talked about the wanting a coach who understood today's players. That is not Jeff Van Gundy.
Mark Jackson
GMEN46 : 4/13/2018 1:44 pm : link
Would be a monumental mistake. They have to pass. Would love Stackhouse or Jay Wright. After that I guess Fizdale. No interest in Doc he is a terrible coach.
Stackhouse and Wright
bceagle05 : 4/13/2018 1:48 pm : link
fit the bill of relating to young players and knowing how to develop them. I bet Stack is the early favorite, but they'll throw a Hail Mary toward Wright.
JVG is not a candidate
Vanzetti : 4/13/2018 3:09 pm : link
A guy who quit midseason because he realized the team had slipped? and who was probably the most offensively challenged coach in recent Knicks history?

If they had a good coach back in the 90s, Knicks would have won a championship. Unfortunately, they had Van Gundy--the Terry Collins of basketball coaches.

I agree JVG is the best choice. But I give him a pass on his quitting. His life long best friend died in 9-11 and even though he never has used that as an excuse for quitting it sounded like that had a dramatic effect on him emotionally and large part of the driving force of his eventual resigning as Knicks HC.
Why do you think van Gundy is the best candidate?

Just a hunch, but the guy that makes sense here to me is Stackhouse.
Optimus-NY : 4/14/2018 12:43 am : link
I'm not a fan of former players coming and coaching, but his profile is unique and he has a chip on his shoulder, which I like. Smart and tough guy with leadership and a heart but he's not afraid of setting mofos straight if they get in the way of the program. Sounds like the guy I'd want running my team. Let him learn and grow with this team.

By the time, they're good, he'll have more experience. I hope we get Bridges in the draft and develop the guys we've got, especially Frank (love his defensive skill-set). Hopefully KP comes back at 100% and we add a quality FA. With any luck, by 2020 we'll have an actually NBA team that's relevant again (which may be hoping for too much).
Itís not a good job right now
Vanzetti : 4/14/2018 12:35 pm : link
With KP out, next years team is a tank job, and even though everybody knows that, the coach still gets blamed

I think it is a tough situation for any new coach.
