The smart play is definitely to roll with Lobaton/Nido for a while. They are both defensive minded so thats good. In June/July asses and look at potential acquisitions. I think its way too early now. The situation definitely sucks.
Be it Lucroy or some of the other options discussed here. We can't wait have too long, we have to go get this done.
This will only lead to us overpaying big time. No reason to do this.
If Plawecki is only going to be out a few weeks, we'll survive.
Like I said before, we've been getting literally nothing offensively from either catcher and are 10-1. Not like either is a defensive whiz, either... especially not d'Arnaud.
We'll be fine. Roll with what we have for now or sign a vet and then when the deadline gets closer make a move for Realmuto or Lucroy if Plawecki isn't hitting much.

Here's some recent feedback I got on some Mets' AAA guys:
Oswalt: back-end starter
Guillorme: Defensive gem
Brentz: Power, low avg.
Smith: best hitter
Cecchini: can be a major leaguer
What are we looking at, mid-late June before he's back?
Given the track record of the Mets training staff...I would say that Plaw will be able to start his rehab sometime in December. Should be ready by next spring.
the Mets must have a Kodak disposable camera for x-rays

@Jacob_Resnick
Mets minor league catching depth after Jose Lobaton is (presumably) called up:
AAA-Colton Plaia (career .249 hitter), Jeff Glenn (literally all he does is catch bullpens)
AA-Patrick Mazeika (cant catch), Tyler Moore (career .211 hitter)
I'm not even the biggest Zack Wheeler believer but @Joelsherman1's Swihart suggestion is absurd. wRC+ of 47 last year in AAA. Hasn't shown any promise with the bat since 2015 #Mets
the Mets are 2nd worst in MLB with 1.03 SB's allowed per game and an absolutely ridiculously bad (though I admit it's early/small sample) 7.7% caught stealing percent.
and that's probably only so low (SB's per game) because the Mets pitching has been good, especially the bullpen, and hasn't allowed a lot of base runners.

Just wait it out IMO.
Besides that neither Plawecki nor TDA's bats had a lot to do with the fast start. So hopefully whomever ends up behind the plate they won't see much off a drop from the position.
just told "The Mets do not have a package that could land Realmuto, the price is extremely high, as it should be".
What type of package are they looking for? Its not like he is the second coming of Johnny Bench.
By fWAR he's been the 2nd best C in baseball the past 2 seasons (by a good margin), 2nd in wRC+. He's signed through 2020. Price should be enormous and apparently is.

Well he was worth over 7 wins the past two years and is under team control for a while, so you're getting his prime years at reasonable cost.
It looks like they've asked for an elite prospect over the summer for him (they supposedly asked Washington for Victor Roebles, who is a top 10 prospect in MLB). The Mets don't have a prospect that highly regarded. You'd probably have to make up in quantity with something like Giminez, Kay and maybe one of the reliever prospects.
Is it worth it? I'm not sure. If you can lock down a top 5 catcher for 4 years at low cost, our chances of winning a world series would go up, that's for sure. One thing to realize though is that most of his value comes from his defense. You're hoping to get an elite defensive catcher who is also a slightly above average hitter.

I'd trade that Mets package for Robles without thinking twice.
Sullivan projected Realmuto to make 27-30 million over 2018-2020
"In terms of surplus value, were talking tens of millions of dollars, which is what would allow the Marlins to turn him into an impressive prospect package. Its pretty obvious that, say, the Nationals, Rockies, and Diamondbacks would be interested in adding Realmuto, and I imagine hed also pique the interest of the As and the Brewers. Other teams could also jump in, if they knew Realmuto was out there. He wouldnt be just a short-term value. Hed also be extremely affordable."
Mid-season and Gimenez is a top 50 prospect and Kay has 10+ starts impressing scouts maybe but right now Gimenez wasn't even on a few top 100 lists at all (and 80+ on others) and Kay has thrown 4 innings and is 23 in low-A. Most teams in baseball will be in on Realmuto so the Marlins will get a huge return. This isn't a $ saving maneuver.

Haha, I think he meant that to be "water under the bridge"
In other words - we're fine.
I interpreted it as the calm before the tidal wave hits...
I think he was saying he might jump.
and if some team approaches you with a fair offer for an everyday catcher, pull the trigger (not Gimenez).

Mets are not expecting Plawecki to be sidelined that long. Several weeks is early estimation.
Link - ( New Window )
look up two posts, Mets think just several weeks, so if they're right mid-May is more realistic for a conservative estimate.
Given the track record of the Mets training staff...I would say that Plaw will be able to start his rehab sometime in December. Should be ready by next spring.
previously with the Mets a couple years ago, not sure if it's major or minor leagues.
I assume minors.

The Mets have not spoken with the Marlins about J.T. Realmuto this week, source says.
They touched base in the offseason, but there is no sign talks went anywhere.
Agreed, that's exactly what I thought Sandy might do:
