But the craziest baseball brawl is still the 1984 Padres-Braves game. Noted lunatic Pascual Perez nailed Alan Wiggins with the first pitch of the game. The Padres then try to hit Perez THREE separate times and....fail. Benches clear the first time but no fighting happens. The second time, Ed Whitson and Dick Williams are tossed. The third time, Greg Booker and Ozzie Virgil (who had taken over managing after Williams' ejection) are thrown out as benches clear again, with punches thrown this time. Incredibly, Joe Torre sends Perez up for a fourth at-bat, when Craig Lefferts finally hits him despite Perez barely even being in the batter's box at all. Another all-out brawl ensues. The funniest thing is that both Lefferts and Perez simply walk away as chaos ensues on the field. Perez goes to the dugout. The Padres' Champ Summers races over to get at Perez but is tackled in foul territory by Bob Horner, who wasn't even active as he was on the DL at the time. Braves fans start throwing beer at Summers, and a few fans even jump on the field to join in. In the ninth, ill-fated Donnie Moore drills Graig Nettles and it starts up one more time. After the field clears, the Padres start getting into it with Braves fans sitting behind the Padre dugout who are throwing stuff at them, with Kurt Bevacqua jumping on the dugout roof to get at the fans.

13 ejections and 5 fan arrests later, the game ends.

at the beginning of the article is pretty funny:

Once baseball's marquee rivalry, Yankees-Red Sox is known more for hogging the primetime schedule and glacial pace of play than the raucous baseball the two teams delivered for decades.

Yea that one was great. Another donnybrook was the Yanks-O's in '98. unlike most basebrawls this one took a long time to heat up. For awhile they just danced and talked then all hell broke loose. half the Yankee team chased Armando Benitez into the O's dugout and Darrel Strawberry caught him with some round houses. It calmed down and then went crazy like 3 times. Joe Girardi wanted to kill someone and Graeme Lloyd threw some haymakers. Here's the link-

yes that was a doozy. Also Mets -Reds in '86, Paul O'Neill a youngster with Cincy.
the Yanks-Os one didn't really get heated until the bullpen guys
Greg from LI : 4/13/2018 1:35 pm : link
specifically Lloyd, got there. Lloyd went berserk on Benitez.

My favorite part of that one was always something a lot of people forget - Benitez hit Tino right after Bernie hit a homer. After the brawl, with Benitez ejected, former Yankee prospect Bobby Munoz came in....and promptly served up a two-run homer to Tim Raines.

Yes. And Strawberry looking to do some damage leading Brosius to get brave only to find hinmself face to face with Benitez! Hysterical double take by Scotty.

Also, the spiky do on Girardi was comical!
Yeah, Brosius' "whoa whoa whoa" after he sees who he's facing

is hilarious.

Since I mentioned Champ Summers in the earlier post, he actually had a really interesting story - he didn't sign a professional contract until he was 25 years old. He played college baseball, then served in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart. After he got out of the army, he was just working an ordinary job when a scout happened to see him play in a softball league and was impressed. He signed Summers to a contract despite his age, and three years later he was a 28 year old rookie. Played ten years in MLB as a reserve outfielder and pinch hitter.
yes I remember that. Great story. I think Champ passed away

Died of cancer in 2012 at age 66. According to his obit he was one of just three MLB players to receive a Purple Heart for Vietnam service.

One of the biggest bitch moves in baseball history - not for nothing was Varitek known as the Vag on the old NoMaas boards. I miss those.

as a Boston catcher I can't fucking stand. Next time a Sawx pitcher drills a Yankee hitter (hopefully Judge or Stanton), forget about charging the mound - just turn around and put that clown on his ass.

Agreed the first rule of sports brawls is you worry about your own teammates when it comes to holding someone back. You don't tackle a guy on the other team from behind.

And you know what? Slade Heathcott did exactly that in the minors.

good form by Heathcott!

Isn't the catcher supposed to run out in front of the batter first to try to keep as much separation as possible, slow down the batter, then try to keep them separated with an wavelength bridge between the 2 before the umps come in to try to cool the matter. CV was timid about getting involved until Austin got close, then all he could do was try to grab the Jersey until forced to get himself between the players to protect Kelly.
Anyway, is Austin appealing? JK deserves the 6(&+) but Austin should get the 5 reduced to 4 or 3.
The series in NY should be friendly, heh?
