NFT: Yanks Doubleheader Sunday...

BC Eagles94 : 4/15/2018 11:19 am
Officially down to one, 1:00 game postponed. We'll see if the night game can be played. Looks doubtful though. Now we get to skip Cessa at least, with CC back Tuesday.
snowed last night during the KC game

something's gotta be done to the schedules moving forward
I'd like MLB to start making retractable roofs mandatory
NYerInMA : 4/15/2018 11:29 am : link
for new stadiums. That or start the season a month later. As the climate continues to get more extreme, you're going to see more and more games postponed or shortened due to this.

Because cold weather and snow has never happened before in April in the Northeast. I agree with moving the season start to mid-April because those two additional weeks make a huge difference.

Not that it's never happened before, but extreme conditions are slowly becoming more common. Again, this is a long-term issue that MLB will have to consider because baseball is more sensitive to weather conditions than football or the indoor sports.
More extreme conditions?

Ok, show be a pattern? I’m snowed on Matsui’s home opener, right?

Nah, let’s build retractable riffs everywhere!

Why not? It's not like the league and teams can't afford it, and it nips the weather problem in the bud.

Cold with rain and snow is not an extreme condition in late March and early April. It is the norm. MLB will never require teams to install a roof or build new stadiums when it can be 1/2 bill to do so. Just like playing the WS in November - it was stupid and greedy to extend the season into the slop on November.
Could they schedule more double headers
xman : 4/15/2018 12:16 pm : link
or split double headers. Taxing on the staff but it could solve weather issues and shave two weeks off season

Or shorten the season since they have considerably lengthened the year with all these extended playoff round series
Some teams
mitch300 : 4/15/2018 12:18 pm : link
Should require a dome. The Twins already have 4 games to make up this season. That's crazy.
MLB is certainly screwed up....
BC Eagles94 : 4/15/2018 12:52 pm : link
in that it is an outdoor sport but can't be played in any real rain. NFL plays through virtually anything. NBA and NHL are indoors. So only MLB has these issues. Then throw in the 6 month season starting in end of March, and it makes a bit of a mess of things.

I doubt it would today in Detroit for today's games. We've had freezing rain since early this morning and everything is covered in ice. This is the kind of storm that brings down power lines and which would certainly add a lot of weight to a dome roof. I'm guessing both games are called off today

All stat break
They already build
old man : 4/15/2018 1:07 pm : link
those short 2 game, 3 game series and extra days the opening week or 2 to accomodate weather, besides getting teams in the flow of the season slowly; then the weather doubles down.
More than 1/2 , about 2/3 the league is in inclement weather territory, including Seattle and rain and Colorado and blizzards. IK both side want more $$$$$ each year but I think 934 reported attendance at CWS, 1/2 attendance the first 2 games of Balt-,Boston, and a likely rain out there on Monday / Patriots day, and 4 games today already in postponed status, the make up dates when the schedule is already loaded up, really has to have both sides rethinking the schedule needs to be restructured.

Hard to play ball in the rain. Slippery bats, muddy field, ball gets heavy and can damage arm, etc.
MLB season is much too long
louinma : 4/15/2018 3:20 pm : link
Start the season mid April, the World Series is over by Nov 1
Some ideas
Ron from Ninerland : 4/15/2018 3:52 pm : link
I'm guessing that Minnesota, Detroit and Kansas City don't draw well in April. Why not have them play their March and early April home games in Charlotte, New Orleans and Nashville ? All have stadiums that can accommodate MLB. They'll get better attendance than they would have in their home stadiums.

Another idea: Extend the all star break by one day, but that last day would be used as a universal make up day for games missed on the first half. This would alleviate scheduling difficulties for rained out games and ease the travel problems.
Here's what you do ..
DennyInDenville : 4/15/2018 4:38 pm : link
Start the season 3 weeks later, in domes and warm cities.

Active rosters extended to 26 or 27 for Sunday's

Every Sunday during the season every team will play a day/night double header.

That's the solution.
Looks like game 2 postponed as well

We'll pick up the 2 wins on June 4th.

I'm with you, Dave. I actually think this break will be helpful. A lot of talent on this team but it hasn't quite come together yet. And yes, Boone is a rookie manager - I think a short break will help him too.

Off topic, but credit to the Mets for their great start. I had a feeling Callaway would get them going, and having Todd Frazier hasn't hurt them either. I know we all wanted Andujar or Torres at 3B but T. Frazier is a useful player himself and helped us last year. Not a regret, because Andujar/Torres are the future - but just giving T. Frazier his due.
