The funny thing..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/17/2018 9:09 am : link
about reading this thread the next day is that if you didn't know the score, you'd think the Yanks had lost and that Boone made one mistake after another in how he managed.

I was going to say that, but we all know who the culprits are and they are no one worth acknowledging.
Anyway, some promising trends
Greg from LI : 4/17/2018 9:17 am : link
In the last week:

Sanchez: 5 games, 8-22, 3 2B, 2 HR, .364/.391/.773
Andujar: 4 games, 4-16, 3 2B, 1 3B, .250/.294/.563 - baby steps
Gardner: 4 games, 6-16, 1 2B, .375/.500/.438

on the flip side
Greg from LI : 4/17/2018 9:18 am : link
Wade is 0-12 in the past week. I like the kid but it's not his time yet. He needs to go back to Scranton and figure things out.

Walker is ice cold too, 2-17, two singles, no walks: .118/.118/.118

Aside from some disagreement with Boone pulling Severino after 6 and Warren and Shreve unable to find the strike zone (not Boone's fault), just what was so negative?

Yeah, but unless Torres actually pulled something last night, one of these guys (probably Wade) will be gone by May 1 latest.

Ellsbury has a THIRD injury now, plantar fasciatis, the SECOND incurred while rehabbing the original oblique injury.

"At this rate, Jacoby Ellsbury is going to wind up with more injuries than hits this season." - Dan Martin, NY Post.

Unreal. His body is breaking down fast. Only good news is that once Frazier gets well, he will be the 4th/5th OF.

Have to feel bad for Ellsbury.
not really

Never wanted him in the first place, suspected this is how his Yankee career would play out.

Yes, to a point. He's goy $68 mill coming in to help him feel better. :-)
From our selfish fan standpoint, that f'ing contract is an albatross and he takes up a valuable spot on the 40 man roster.

Ranks up there with the Pujols contract as worst ever. For somebody rehabbing, he seems to be getting more weird injuries than what would be believable. Wonder if he is pulling Cashman's chain?
section125, this contract is the one blight on Cashman's record over
Victor in CT : 4/17/2018 10:13 am : link
past 5-7 years. It violates so many obvious principals. Length of the deal for a player reliant on his legs AND with significant injury history, only played 150+ games twice in 6 years, not a great run producer, AND A not trade clause to boot.

UGH!
Honestly, I wonder how much of that was Cashman
Greg from LI : 4/17/2018 10:16 am : link
and how much of it was Hal Steinbrenner panicking after Cano went to Seattle.

Whenever the Yankees make an obviously awful decision I just assume Levine is at the bottom of it.
That was a strange offseason.

Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran in rapid fire succession (I forget what order). I really didn't like any of those moves.

That's a good point. But at least Hal seems to be a guy who is reasonable and willing to listen and learn. Can you imagine if Hank-en-Stein was still in charge? We'd have the Ellsbury AND the Pujols contracts :-) And God knows what else.
If there’s any silver lining to the fact the Yanks are paying Ellsbury
mfsd : 4/17/2018 10:20 am : link
for 3 more seasons after this - it seems Cashman (and Steinbrenner and company) finally learned their lesson after this one
I didn't really have much problem with the latter two
Greg from LI : 4/17/2018 10:22 am : link
Ellsbury was a terrible mistake. They paid him as if they expected him to repeat his 2011 season instead of seeing it as the massive fluke that it was. They also paid top dollar for a guy who was frequently injured as he headed into his age 30 season, as if he would get more durable with age for some reason.
Hah.....it's funny now to look back at the brief reign of Hank
Greg from LI : 4/17/2018 10:24 am : link
What a buffoon.

Ellsbury as a Yankee: .264/.330/.386, many DL visits. All for the low low price of $150 million!

McCann and Beltran were at least reasonably productive and they were able to turn them into three good pitching prospects in Abreu, Guzman and Tate. Beltran's leadership clearly left a positive impression as well, considering he got a managerial interview right after retiring.

There is not a single positive from this Ellsbury contract. It's immovable, he's an average player at best when he does manage to get in. And the frustrating part is most knew this at the time. It was not hard to envision things playing out this way. I wish we could get the real story and why it happened. Because it runs contrary to everything Cashman has done recently.

THIS!!!!!!! McAnn and Beltran were short term fixes with short, tradeable contracts. Ellsbury was just ridiculous. 7 years for an injury case with 1 gerat year out of 7.

has said on numerous occasions, when you let a player go to someone in your division, that is a red flag. The Red Sox didn't even offer him a contract.

Proof that a stopped watch is right twice a day. :-)
Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran
arniefez : 4/17/2018 10:35 am : link
were Cano's money and a panicked over reaction to Cano leaving probably heavily influenced by Levine and Trost convincing Hal that he'd lose ticket sales and ratings unless he made big free agent signings. More than teaching Cashman a lesson about more long term contracts it probably cost Levine and Trost a lot juice with Hal on baseball decisions. They both seem quite neutered lately which is a great thing.

Stupid thing was they had the exact same player on the team already in Gardner. And while Ells may have had a touch more power and was a better base stealer, Gardner was better in every other way, especially defense. Yep, definitely a panic move over Cano signing in Seattle (which I had no problem with for that much money.) I know I'm biased, but Gardner was always the better player because of reliability and defense.

Gardy’s also always been a popular clubhouse/team leader guy. Ellsbury, while never being a bad guy, has always seemed to be quiet and kinda weird.
