My thoughts of the Giants draft

George from PA : 4/17/2018 10:17 am
First, I want to say that I would be fine and understand all current options with the Giants 1st pick:

Draft a franchise QB. The Packer fans are thrill how they went from Favre to Rodger although a tad early. I get it. Eli is in his twilight. Hell, many here believe he is done. I feel he has PTS. He is a bit shell shocked due to years of bad OL play, which he must overcome. I feel DG is serious about fixing the OL and Eli must gain confidence in his OL and play that way. I think if he can overcome his yips, he still has a couple more years.

I also feel with Peyton being a better player, having a better career etc etc, and winning his 2nd Super Bowl has Eli extra motivated to win his 3rd. Pipedream...probably. I suspect in Shurmur interview, he must believe that he can win with Eli.

Draft BPA. This is the goal of every team that have been run correctly. But as we know, The Giants have not been.

Trade Down. As of last count, we have more holes then draft picks. We need:
A corner. Do you trust Eli Apple? DRC gone
A starting OG. They need more hogmollies
A FS. Who is playing opposite Collins?
A RB. Gallman is only I trust right now.
A #2 WR. Do we really trust Marshall?
An edge rusher. There are never enough
Tackles both offense and defense. Rail thin depth
A Punter
And of course, a future franchise QB.

Strategic Trade Down while still drafting BPA. Yesterday’s 3-team trade rumor has me intrigued because it is win for all 3 teams. Buffalo seems to be willing to trade away the farm to move up for a QB. The Giants seems to be open to a small trade down (not 12) and The Browns 2 biggest needs are QB and LT. They will get the QB with their 1st pick but their 2nd @ 4 is too early for McGlinchey, the best LT in the draft, so I understand why moving to 12 is not such a bad idea……and getting a ton of extra picks won’t suck. This could work real well.

Not to mention, sitting @4 with 3 QB going 1-2-3....will also draw a ton of interest for even more action as Baker is last premium QB. Denver?

If the Giants can somehow come away with Barkley and some extra premium picks……this options becomes my favorite.

I have been critical of Barkely, as a Penn St fan…..I know his short coming. Even with his size, he avoids contact, so he strength is not in-between the tackles. His running style reminds me of Barry Sanders always trying to get the home run instead of taking what the defense gives you. But it’s not like he can’t do it. He squats over 500lbs…the man is a beast. He must adjust to the NFL game. His receiving skills is superior. He a good pass protector. He is a special talent and he will force teams to deal with him, hopefully opening up the play action. I think he is a perfect fit for Shurmur offense and totally worthy of an early pick.

One thing is for sure, this draft can not come soon enough.

One thing I’d like to address:

I’m totally fine with a RB avoiding contact when prudent to do so
George I agree with your premise
Chris684 : 4/17/2018 10:28 am : link
The Giants have played their cards perfectly if:

They get Barkley/Chubb/Nelson in the 4-7 range and accumulated additional draft capital in the process.

They would have:

Improved the roster in the short term.
Allowed Shurmur more time to work with/evaluate Webb.
Set up next year's draft to take a stab at QB if needed.
Quantity does not necessarily guarantee quality
JonC : 4/17/2018 10:34 am : link
The trade down threads wreak of win now. NYG needs impact talent, quality talent, and in trading down you're often sacrificing those aspects for quantity.

I could see them moving down to 4 or 5, but not to 12.
I've been on the QB train for a while now, but
Tom from LI : 4/17/2018 10:38 am : link
I just got off at the last station. The more I re-watch the actual games these QB's play rather than highlights I have become less enamored with them.

Right now I am not on any train.

There are multiple factions here at BBI..

You have the:

1)QB at any cost faction
2)The anybody but a QB faction
3)The trade down faction
4)The Eli is absolutely done faction
5)The Davis Webb is a third rounder and will never amount to anything faction
6)The Josh Rosen will be the best QB to ever be drafted faction. He should have his name added to the ring of honor immediately after being drafted.
7)The Josh Allen can throw it 80 yards but still not be able to throw it in the ocean standing on a beach faction.
8)The Barkley will be a bust faction
9)The Baker Mayfield is too short to be a NY Giants QB faction.
10)The trust DG and PS faction and let it play out faction

I am sure there is more factions..

I am now in the 1% undecided of who I want the Giants to draft faction.

I echo this can't end soon enough. I am no longer enjoying this.

I agree 5 or 6 starters from one draft is asking alot and not likely

Barry Sanders did it his entire career. Unless you are Brandon Jacobs or Christian Okoye, all RBs should minimize head on collisions with DTs and MLBs...

and Okoye had a very short career because of it.. I agree RB's should avoid contact when necessary, if they have the ability to run around or past someone..
Trade down
Csonka : 4/17/2018 10:51 am : link
I believe Eli can still be good in the right situation. We're in too much of a hurry to move on. With a good line, a good RB, and a healthy Odell, he can still make all the throws. He's only 37. He can be good for a while longer.

I'd love to trade back a little but still get Nelson. Then add a good RB and a WR.

the trade down proposed by the 3 way trade rumor.

is simply Giants moving from 2 to 4 or 5.

and still drafting bpa.....just not a QB

while accumulating premium draft picks.....

And Earl Campbell didn't do it (prudently avoid contact) and is now a physical wreck.

Which is not surprising regarding Barry Sanders, should since Barkley has said he fashioned his running style on his idol.
Agreed George

One of the best scenarios/outcomes Ive seen to date.
I can agree with that

This was the best trade scenario I’ve seen to date all 3 teams satisfied
