NFT: New York Mets vs. Walgreens Nationals - Game 2 - Redemption

arcarsenal : 4/17/2018 11:37 am
Can we just burn that other fucking thread? I don't want to look at it anymore.

New day, fresh start.

Wheeler vs. Gio.

Cespedes has had success against Gio so he'll almost certainly be back in the lineup today.

Time to see what this team is made of and how they handle a little adversity. Everything's easy when you're winning. Now we've got to bounce back from a horrific loss.

I have no idea what Frazier was looking for during that AB. He had some of the worst swings I've ever seen.

It's a game of momentum - long season, you ride in waves. We had all of it yesterday and let it all get away.

I fully expect to be swept and let Washington right back into the race when we had a golden opportunity to put them in a massive early season hole.

Such is Mets baseball. Never easy, never as planned, and usually disappointing when all is said and done.
Hate to say it

The most frustrating part of this is that it's one of those games that just felt like a loss from the very first batter. When Turner led off the game with a double, you could just feel the carryover from last night.
.
arcarsenal : 4/17/2018 10:01 pm : link
Rosario has to stop doing that. He make it look like he's waiting for the ump to ring him up on a close pitch w two strikes. The good vets learn to sell those.
We are still in a great position. Let’s weather this storm
PhiPsi125 : 4/17/2018 10:03 pm : link
and get on another roll. The Nationals have done nothing to overly impress me this series as much as the Mets have disappointed with their play. This game they’ve walked too many, letting the Nats run at will and been dinked and dunked to death. They played right into the Nats hand tonight.

Hang tight boys!
They need a day off, and to get out of this shit 40 degree weather.

Reyes and Frazier both strike out with runners on third and one out. Mats manufacture two runs with stolen bases

Mets need to get s catcher who can throw. I know they are runnng on the pitchers but you need a guy who can Gun somebody down occasionally.Opposition is running with impunity. Mickey has to work with the pitchers at holding runners. It’s ridiculous now
.
arcarsenal : 4/17/2018 10:22 pm : link
I don't care if the guy we put behind the plate bats .200. If he can actually throw runners out, get him here immediately.

This can't continue.

Also, turning point of the game last night was Reyes AB in the 6th.

Reyes is literally the last guy on the roster I would want up in that spot. He has no value to this team. It's over.
I've been blacked out
Metnut : 4/18/2018 9:26 am : link
these past two games and havn't had time to set up my VPN yet.

Looks like Wheeler at least hung in there even if things wern't as smooth this time. Even losing two in a row to Washington isn't the end of the world. Gio somehow always shuts this team down. Really need the salvage game today.

Random.... but Philly is going to be tough to deal with going forward. That lineup is deep and full of threats and they still have a shitload of payroll to add the next few offseasons.
This is just a bump in the road - but a revealing thing
Eric on Li : 4/18/2018 9:36 am : link
is that once again when they face a team that puts the ball in play and doesn't strike out much, defensive weaknesses get exposed. They've gotten way better up the middle, but the catcher problem needs to be fixed (even if it's a good backup). And that's not something they can really blame on injuries because the other guys aren't that much better controlling the running game. Weak singles through the infiled can happen against anyone, but they really hurt when you combine them with walks and stolen bases.

The bats going quiet is gonna happen from time to time. Having the catchers go up as automatic outs certainly doesn't help, and they've been resting players the last couple days. This team has some growing to do - but that's ok and should be expected.

Biggest takeaway from yesterday's game is Wheeler having a quality start without his best stuff.
At this point
Metnut : 4/18/2018 9:40 am : link
do we think that Cecchini would offer more than Reyes?

Really wish we had TJ Rivera. He's a nice guy to have on your bench. He's still 6-8 weeks away right?

Yup. This is the one team I didn't want this to happen against because they're going to be the biggest obstacle if we want any shot at re-claiming the NLE.

If we had played like a bunch of turds against MIL but picked it back up here, I'd feel a lot better.

I hope we can salvage one tonight - but I think we're getting swept. Oy.

The problem is Reyes has had like 16 atbats in 3+ weeks. Making Cecchini the 25th man would destroy any development he might still need. Almost anybody is going to go cold with that little playing time. I get it... Reyes is cold... again... but he’s played the equivalent of about 4 games or so. It’s really not a big sample and who cares about his development? If he can pinch run once in a while or whatever it’s still good enough. It honestly doesn’t bother me.
Reyes was abhorrent through June last season.
PhiPsi125 : 4/18/2018 10:49 am : link
Them had a good second half of the season (although with 21 less games played in the second half).

Honestly, I'm done with him. Not waiting for the light to turn on again. His third strike swing last night was pathetic.

Now that we've hit that bump in the road, can we please forget about "making a change in the clubhouse" and cut the dead weight that is Reyes? He's not particularly good in the field, can't hit, not even fast anymore. Let's move on please.
That’s actually not true...
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2018 10:55 am : link
I can show you splits for different weeks over the first half last year where Reyes was on fire including the last week of April. I really don't feel like arguing about it though or taking the time to break it all down. He sucks. Whatever. The guy literally has zero impact on wins and losses. For some reason the starters will take 47 bad atbats in a game and everyone will single out Reyes one pinch hit and blame everything on him (not even referring to posters here) . It’s kind of ridiculous.

Let’s go get back Miguel Cairo or Chris Woodward for that spot I guess.

Honestly, I don't care about a two week stretch where he got some hits. That just means he was that much worse the rest of the month. For half the year he was horrible (for the most part). And he played a lot last season. He was essentially a starter.

We don't have to argue. We can agree to disagree. Reyes brings very very little to this team. And the fact that he was pinch hitting in that situation with Nimmo and Conforto on the bench was a crime.

I really hope he's not starting today but it wouldn't surprise me.

Not disagreeing but who backs up SS if Rosario goes down. BTW he's not exactly lighting it up at SS either

That's a completely valid question. Honestly, I would roll with Rosario and let him learn. We have options on the team that could back up SS (Cabrera, Flores) if necessary. No, not the best options but Reyes is such a net-negative. Both Cabrera/Flores would be serviceable in the back up role.

Admittedly, not as up on the minor league options so I'm not sure if anyone can be brought up to replace Reyes. Otherwise, take a look at what the market brings.

If Reyes is going to play as little as he has been, then I guess you can roll with him. But, for the love of god, do not bat him in critical situations.
If Rosario goes down...we are screwed.
PhiPsi125 : 4/18/2018 11:23 am : link
No options at the major level, no good options at the minor level (that I know of). And my thought is that Sandy would just go with Jose again. So let's hope Rosario doesn't go down lol.

Trade for Peraza and Mesoraco, Reds4lyfe
If Rosario goes down Guillorme should get a look at SS if he's hitting
Eric on Li : 4/18/2018 2:21 pm : link
in AAA. He's probably the 2nd best defender (to Rosario) in the entire system and he looked decent in ST. He's only played 10 games so far obviously but he's got 4 doubles and he's walked 7 times, so there may something to work with offensively. I expect Reyes will have at least until Rivera is ready to return before he's DFA'd.

If it isn't a long time they may move Cabrera to SS and then bring up Cecchini from Las Vegas and he and Flores will platoon at 2B
