NFT: Golf Swing

lpdcan28 : 4/18/2018 8:03 am
Looking to get back in the game. Any recommendations for a simple/basic swing program? I have found too many that seem complicated or rough on the back (in terms of how much rotation they want). Someone told me of "natural golf" methods? Thanks for any help.
Single plane swing. Find the one that works for you.

There are many out there. Moe Norman, Jerry Heard, lots of others. They put a lot less stress on your back and other joints than a more classic, conventional swing.

More repeatable with a lot less practice because it doesn’t need as much muscle memory training. More like a baseball swing.

Moe Norman swing is probably the least “classic looking” and maybe most foreign to learn.

and study their swing. for me ben hogan and his book was really helpful. tiger's first book when he was still with titleist was also a really great fundamentals builder.

Love Shawn Clement. His Youtube channel is fantastic

With the single plane swing notion. Just try not to replicate Moe or what Bryson DeChambeau has done with it. A single plane swing should be simple, compact, and repeatable.

Whatever you decide upon.

Don't focus so much about how the swing 'looks' and that you're hitting all your positions.

I'm a proponent of Hank Haney's focus on the ball flight...where it starts and where it moves. Find a swing and swing thoughts that you can corrolate to your ball flight.

Funny you posted this today. I am seeing a PGA pro this afternoon who is both TPI certified and a Wright Balance fitter. I had back surgery about 10 years ago and I am gathering every scrap of information I can get to make sure I'm not working against what my body is capeable of. At age 53 that's less and less every year unless I work at it.

is a fantastic book. I try and read this before golf season each year as long as I can remember where I left it.

As far as your back goes, try and make sure you warm up & stretch properly before each round. Get one of those ball pickers that goes on your putter grip to reduce the bending over to pick up your ball.

So True.

I happen to have a pretty decent swing but I gave up a while ago looking for that perfect PGA swing. Those guys are legit athletes who work out all day and week long to get that flexibility and strength.

If you have 8 minutes to spare and want to watch a guy with a swing that looks like a guy who barely has played before break 80 click on the youtube link below. I came across it recently and it blew my mind.

Seriously, it's likely the advice you find on the internet and try to self teach yourself is going to do more harm than good

very good web site... for learning the fundamentals of the golf swing... the owner Clay Ballard is an exceptional teacher.. Check youtube to get an idea of some of his videos.. If you decide to join the website there is fee to but well worth the price (something like 7 dollars a month).

So funny that you posted this to my reply. My swing is nowhere as ugly as the guy in the video. I have been an athlete my whole life and played more than enough hockey too.

Well, my first round of golf was when I was 25 yrs old. Yes, I had been to the driving range quite a few times growing up but never a round of golf. I would say that I am a bit of a freak in the sense that I never (not even my first round) shot over 100. However, I never broke 80 either.

After one year and about 15 lifetime rounds of golf, I go play with my brother in law on his club course (so yeah he plays a lot). He at this point is also taking lessons from a pro to refine his game. I beat him by a few strokes even though we were out for a leisurely day of golf. Back at my sister's house he tells me that my swing really sucks but I "score well". WTF? I told him he can continue working on his picture perfect swing with his golf pro, and I will continue beating his ass with my not so pretty swing.

Now, I have not played a round of golf in three years and I feel confident that I can go out there tomorrow and beat him with his pro style swing.

The true test will be on the course. This Sunday to be exact. I've been playing for 12 years, took lessons fairly regularly to start out, went to golf school in '14 and have gone occasionally to a local PGA pro/club fitter for a look over now and then. Handicap is 15, btw.

None of them picked up on the fact that my trail hand grip was making me fight to keep the hand on the club, and nobody fixed my angles & weight distribution at address to take the load off my back with 100pct success. I should say that golf school had me doing some of this, but not the whole list of fixes. The measurements also showed that I really have to clear enough room for my arms to come through with proper extension based on my wingspan vs. height.

Between those changes, the 'proper' stance width according to Wright-B and a small slide towards the target before pulling the trigger, the instructor had me flushing 8i's without a lot of dispersion and my finish was way more balanced.

So I have pressure-free golf Sunday. Total leap of faith on the 'new stuff', and playing with the guy that got me started 12 years ago for the first time in awhile.

Will keep you posted.
