Anyone else have this dilemma about the Giants draft?

M.S. : 4/18/2018 8:25 am
On the one hand, you fall squarely in the camp of "let's get a QB at #2" and hope we have found Eli's replacement.

Yet, on the other hand, you know in your heart of hearts it would be a hell of a lot more entertaining if the Giants trade down and collect several premium picks!

This is where I've been for the past 3 months.
I think it would be more fun to get Barkley at 2.

Yes, though I wouldn't exactly call it a 'dilemma'.

Move like "mixed feelings". It might be a dilemma for Dave Gettleman, since he has to make the decision.

For me, it just adds interest to draft season.
No, for me it is

about wanting to get either Barkley (which I am 50/50 on) or trading down. A QB at #2 is not what I want to do.
I want to watch Barkley

entertain us for years to come. Along with OBJ.
Actually trading down
joeinpa : 4/18/2018 8:46 am : link
Is my least favorite option. It s a rare opportunity to pick at #2 and get the type of player you can find there.

I want one of these guys to be the quarterback that can succeed Eli. There s no guarantee but to me it s so much fun to have a young quarterback to get behind knowing he can be the guy for the next 10 to 15 years.

However if they take Barkley that would be fun as well, and we can hope Webb is the guy.
Me too

A) we get our next QB for the next 15 years
B) we get the best player in the draft (Barkley/Chubb/Nelson)
C) we trade out of #2 and get multiple picks to build the team for at least the next 4 years.

Which ever way they go it is a Win Win situation
Yes
EB222 : 4/18/2018 8:49 am : link

I favor Rosen or Chubb, but I also want an additional second and
third round pick to "play" with. Would love for the Giants to pull
that off, but the potential to screw it all up is high.

That said, if the Giants have conviction on an available QB, you
make the pick.

I don't believe in any of the QB's though I am curious about Mayfield. I hope the Giants prove me wrong about one of the QB's. On the other hand if I am right, I want those extra picks with something next year to help go after a QB
No. This is a dream come true.
BillT : 4/18/2018 9:08 am : link
We’re at or very near the end of the line with the greatest QB in Giants history and we have a chance to draft his replacement. You couldn’t make this up. Teams go decades, stuck in mediocrity, without a good QB and we have a chance to go from one to the next without missing a beat Doesn’t seem like a dilemma. Seems like an ideal situation.

Don t know how old you are.

But if you saw Tittle, Tarkington or Simms play, not sure you would make that statement as an absolute. In the conversation for sure, but those guys were pretty good
Another vote to not trade down

+1. I want to see the Giants draft a superstar, whatever position that is.
If it were me selecting #2
JPinstripes : 4/18/2018 9:21 am : link
in this years draft I would take Chubb, a high impact top talent outside edge rusher that can also play the run.

A Day 1 starter and potential perennial pro bowl type player at a high value position.

With that said, I think the Giants will go Barkley or Darnold.
If you love the qb you take the qb
djm : 4/18/2018 9:37 am : link
And count your blessings. It’s as simple as that.

If you don’t love the qb u explore trading down but not at the expense of losing a shot at Barkley, Nelson, Chubb, fitz or one of the blue chips. Period. That’s it.
To me
Gman11 : 4/18/2018 9:40 am : link
it doesn't matter what they do. If they go for the RB then they're are looking to get back in the playoffs this year by improving what was a pathetic offense. If they go for the QB then they are looking to avoid the Dave Brown/Danny Kanel sort of QB hell.

Either way, it makes sense to me.
It's a win win situation...

It's a great position for the Giants to be in ...
Beezer : 4/18/2018 9:56 am : link
... which, of course, leads me to not have a clue what I'd prefer they do. Such a tossup. Is getting a QB the right thing? I hear the arguments, and I get it. But Webb could be good. Just don't know. Barkley is a very shiny thing, and we'd probably guess a help. I get the trade-down-but-not-too-far chatter.

Jerry K... you are right! And I aced the English SATs many decades ago. Embarrassing. Should have said "competing sentiments" or something like that. Or, maybe I shouldn't have started this thread! {:-(
No dilemma...

Good point but which QB at 2? Darnold by his skill set and demeanor has Giants written all over him. Rosen looked to me as the best pure passer but with limited views of him in games. Allen, physical freak that to me, is boom or bust kind of QB. Mayfield great field leader but doesn't seem like a fit with the Giants.

The real blue chippers stop at pick seven and I wouldn't want to pick past six. My argument is one of super quality over quantity. Again, this is only my opinion formed by reading and watching a myriad of analyses of this years crop of players.

But with that all said and done, my head says Darnold at 2 but my heart says Barkley with pick 2. I just have visions from my seat at Met Life where defenses quake in their shoes when they have to defend against Barkley, OBJ, Engram, Shepard and Eli. Maybe in that scenario we will be an awesome offense that will be very hard to defend (assuming that the O-Line is at least adequate). One can only hope.
i mean they really shouldnt overcomplicate things
jintz4life : 4/18/2018 11:11 am : link
they're picking #2 in a year with what appears to be 2 qbs ahead of the rest and a wildcard in mayfield

eli is at the end of his career - in an emotionless world they cut him at the end of the year to save 17m on the cap

teams like the bills have been looking for a franchise qb for over 20 years

you take the qb who is left between darnold/rosen and if theyre both there id hope rosen is the pick

then you use the money saved from cutting eli to pay beckham and maintain the balance in cap usage between the qb and #1 wr, just the opposite with the highly paid wr and the low rookie scale qb
MS, I feel the same way. It would be nice to have our cake
yatqb : 4/18/2018 11:13 am : link
and eat it too, but that's unlikely. So I too would go QB if I believed in the kid, or trade down and still land a prime time player while adding picks.
I'm fine with trading down
Go Terps : 4/18/2018 11:19 am : link
I think the right move is to draft a quarterback AND move Eli. Drafting a quarterback to sit behind Eli is a mistake.

I still think Eli can play, but that the Giants are making one or possibly both of these mistakes in keeping him:

1) Sentimentality
2) Delusion in thinking the team is good enough to win now

Given that it seems a certainty he's the quarterback in 2018, I'm fine with trading down and amassing picks. Having more players over the next 4-5 years on cheap rookie contracts will help maintain fluidity despite the likely contracts given to Beckham and Collins.
No. I'm not sold on ANY of these QBs coming out this year.
Red Dog : 4/18/2018 12:57 pm : link
And I think Eli still has two or three years left in the tank.

Plus I think there may well be better QBs to be drafted in two or three years down the pike.

So I have no problems with drafting a non-QB at #2, and would love it if they could trade down a few spots and still get one of the top non-QBs like Barkley, Nelson, or maybe Chubb.
My competing sentiments come into play...
STLGiant : 4/18/2018 1:24 pm : link
only if Cleveland picks Barkley. If that occurs, I like the trade down option--so long as the Giants can be assured to get DE/LB Chubb, even if it means trading back up. As good as Quinton Nelson is, I can't see us ever drafting another OG no matter how good he is (see John Hicks, Ohio State). I just hope Chubb is the next drug-free LT, not the next Dhani Jones.

Should Cleveland select Darnold, then I think we pick Barkley...if only because Mara, barring team injuries, and IMHO won't put up with anything less than the playoffs next season.

The team as others have posted, might not be as good as advertised. However, I'd argue if the offense can finally establish a running game, and control the clock, the defense won't be out on the field as much, and will therefore be more than able to protect the lead the offense provides. We all know that Eli is his deadliest with having a defense that must respect his play-action...

Many of you have helped me narrow the opinion that QB should be selected no matter what. For those in that camp, do you feel that Darnold's the next Joe Montana? What about Josh Rosen? Who is he like? He's no Eli, that's for sure! What about Josh Allen? Do you think he's akin to the next Phil Simms? Inquiring mind seeking BBI opinions...
I may get killed for this but
Bleedblue10 : 4/18/2018 1:37 pm : link
I see Aaron Rodgers in Josh Rosen. His medical? That’s for the team to figure out but for the life of me I can’t figure out why this kid isn’t the consensus number 1 pick. If not him I’m in the Saquon camp although taking a RB at 2 just feels so wrong no matter how good he is/will be

There are three main reasons he is not a consensus number one:

(1) Injury history. Except for his Freshman year he has not made it through an entire college season healthy. In the NFL he will be subjected to harder hits from bigger/faster players, more games, and less bye weeks. The question for teams will be whether there was something in his technique that is correctable that will make him less prone to injuries from hits or does he just have a naturally more "frail" body. Eli Manning took a lot of hits but never missed a snap.

(2) Attitude. Seeing John Urschel, Chris Borland, and others retiring early will Josh Rosen do the same if he is subjected to a lot of hits or just stuck on a bad team? Related to this is whether he has the desire to do what it takes to be an NFL QB. You can have all the talent in the world, but with the wrong attitude you won't last as long as you could (see Jeff George). Only team interviews can answer that and teams will never divulge publicly what transpired.

(3) Mobility. Aaron Rodgers is a threat because he can extend plays with his legs. If his mobility was like Eli Manning's is he the same level of QB?

Eli is better than Tarkington or Simms. And as good as Tittle was he didn't have the kind of career here that Eli did (nor did Tarkington for that matter).
