On the one hand, you fall squarely in the camp of "let's get a QB at #2" and hope we have found Eli's replacement.
Yet, on the other hand, you know in your heart of hearts it would be a hell of a lot more entertaining if the Giants trade down and collect several premium picks!
This is where I've been for the past 3 months.
For me, it just adds interest to draft season.
I want one of these guys to be the quarterback that can succeed Eli. There s no guarantee but to me it s so much fun to have a young quarterback to get behind knowing he can be the guy for the next 10 to 15 years.
However if they take Barkley that would be fun as well, and we can hope Webb is the guy.
B) we get the best player in the draft (Barkley/Chubb/Nelson)
C) we trade out of #2 and get multiple picks to build the team for at least the next 4 years.
Which ever way they go it is a Win Win situation
I favor Rosen or Chubb, but I also want an additional second and
third round pick to "play" with. Would love for the Giants to pull
that off, but the potential to screw it all up is high.
That said, if the Giants have conviction on an available QB, you
make the pick.

This is the way I feel about it as well.
But if you saw Tittle, Tarkington or Simms play, not sure you would make that statement as an absolute. In the conversation for sure, but those guys were pretty good

Is my least favorite option. It s a rare opportunity to pick at #2 and get the type of player you can find there.

+1. I want to see the Giants draft a superstar, whatever position that is.
A Day 1 starter and potential perennial pro bowl type player at a high value position.
With that said, I think the Giants will go Barkley or Darnold.
If you don’t love the qb u explore trading down but not at the expense of losing a shot at Barkley, Nelson, Chubb, fitz or one of the blue chips. Period. That’s it.
Either way, it makes sense to me.
Riveting TV next Thursday night!
Jerry K... you are right! And I aced the English SATs many decades ago. Embarrassing. Should have said "competing sentiments" or something like that. Or, maybe I shouldn't have started this thread! {:-(
The real blue chippers stop at pick seven and I wouldn't want to pick past six. My argument is one of super quality over quantity. Again, this is only my opinion formed by reading and watching a myriad of analyses of this years crop of players.
But with that all said and done, my head says Darnold at 2 but my heart says Barkley with pick 2. I just have visions from my seat at Met Life where defenses quake in their shoes when they have to defend against Barkley, OBJ, Engram, Shepard and Eli. Maybe in that scenario we will be an awesome offense that will be very hard to defend (assuming that the O-Line is at least adequate). One can only hope.
eli is at the end of his career - in an emotionless world they cut him at the end of the year to save 17m on the cap
teams like the bills have been looking for a franchise qb for over 20 years
you take the qb who is left between darnold/rosen and if theyre both there id hope rosen is the pick
then you use the money saved from cutting eli to pay beckham and maintain the balance in cap usage between the qb and #1 wr, just the opposite with the highly paid wr and the low rookie scale qb
I still think Eli can play, but that the Giants are making one or possibly both of these mistakes in keeping him:
1) Sentimentality
2) Delusion in thinking the team is good enough to win now
Given that it seems a certainty he's the quarterback in 2018, I'm fine with trading down and amassing picks. Having more players over the next 4-5 years on cheap rookie contracts will help maintain fluidity despite the likely contracts given to Beckham and Collins.
Plus I think there may well be better QBs to be drafted in two or three years down the pike.
So I have no problems with drafting a non-QB at #2, and would love it if they could trade down a few spots and still get one of the top non-QBs like Barkley, Nelson, or maybe Chubb.
Should Cleveland select Darnold, then I think we pick Barkley...if only because Mara, barring team injuries, and IMHO won't put up with anything less than the playoffs next season.
The team as others have posted, might not be as good as advertised. However, I'd argue if the offense can finally establish a running game, and control the clock, the defense won't be out on the field as much, and will therefore be more than able to protect the lead the offense provides. We all know that Eli is his deadliest with having a defense that must respect his play-action...
Many of you have helped me narrow the opinion that QB should be selected no matter what. For those in that camp, do you feel that Darnold's the next Joe Montana? What about Josh Rosen? Who is he like? He's no Eli, that's for sure! What about Josh Allen? Do you think he's akin to the next Phil Simms? Inquiring mind seeking BBI opinions...
There are three main reasons he is not a consensus number one:
(1) Injury history. Except for his Freshman year he has not made it through an entire college season healthy. In the NFL he will be subjected to harder hits from bigger/faster players, more games, and less bye weeks. The question for teams will be whether there was something in his technique that is correctable that will make him less prone to injuries from hits or does he just have a naturally more "frail" body. Eli Manning took a lot of hits but never missed a snap.
(2) Attitude. Seeing John Urschel, Chris Borland, and others retiring early will Josh Rosen do the same if he is subjected to a lot of hits or just stuck on a bad team? Related to this is whether he has the desire to do what it takes to be an NFL QB. You can have all the talent in the world, but with the wrong attitude you won't last as long as you could (see Jeff George). Only team interviews can answer that and teams will never divulge publicly what transpired.
(3) Mobility. Aaron Rodgers is a threat because he can extend plays with his legs. If his mobility was like Eli Manning's is he the same level of QB?
But if you saw Tittle, Tarkington or Simms play, not sure you would make that statement as an absolute. In the conversation for sure, but those guys were pretty good
Eli is better than Tarkington or Simms. And as good as Tittle was he didn't have the kind of career here that Eli did (nor did Tarkington for that matter).
