Bruno was my childhood idol but that statement would be unfair to Pedro Morales, who followed Bruno & had a legendary 1 hour match w/Bruno! Morales carried himself in similar fashion to Bruno. Rip Bruno!
Bob Backlund..

had dignity. I looked at him as the prototypical wrestler - as in a collegiate wrestler.

think you might be thinking of Larry Zbysko
RIP to the Living Legend
BIG FRED 1973 : 4/18/2018 10:50 am : link
My earliest wrestling memories was the time Larry Zbyszko turned on him i was hooked and have been a fan ever since .I was at his hall of fame induction in 2013 .It was great And At least Vince and Bruno settled their differences .
When Backlund turned..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/18/2018 10:50 am : link
he was such a bizarre character that it reinforced what a classy champ he was!!

Wearing a bowtie and misusing big words and the whole Call me Mr. Backlund crap. One of the worst attempts at being a heel ever. He couldn't pull it off.

Agreed, love watching old wrestling matches on YouTube, Backlunds wrestling ability was remarkable.

Bruno was a little before my time, think of him like some of the great 70s NFL players - probably never gets the full recognition he deserves bc his prime was before the sport blew up with cable TV, but true old time wrestling fans always speak with awe of Bruno’s abilities.

Backlund is still kicking

Looks exactly the same.

If any guy lives to be 200, it's going to be Bob Backlund. I don't think he can age.

Well done
Ahh, the WWF, when entertainment wrestling

was at it's best. I remember how heartbroken I was when Bob Backland lost the title to The Iron Sheik, and how psyched I got when Hulk Hogan took down the Sheik.

The greatest. Sold out the Garden more than Billy Joel.
The night he lost the Title to Buddy Rodgers
Stan in LA : 4/18/2018 11:52 am : link
Was a sad night indeed.
Just to clarify, he was never WWF champion
weeg in the bronx : 4/18/2018 12:10 pm : link
But the WWWF Champion. He probably still holds the record for MSG sell outs as the headliner.

an amazing draw in the Northeast. And his final stuff with Savage/Steamboat was fantastic.
Lost the title

To Koloff and Graham. Beat Rogers and Stasiak to win the title.

Realized what I was thinking Both Bruno & Backlund were managed by Arnold Skaaland w/Backlund much later attacking Skaaland when he went heel. Knew it was related somehow, just screwed it up initially1
I was at the Garden
Phil in LA : 4/18/2018 12:44 pm : link
When Backlund beat Graham for the title. Also there when Graham beat Mil Mascaras and Dusty Rhodes.

Sorry, this is what I was thinking about:

"Sammartino and Rogers did face each other two months later at Madison Square Garden in a tag team match, with Rogers and Handsome Johnny Barend defeating Sammartino and Bobo Brazil by 2 falls to 1. Sammartino did not trust Rogers and the two did not work together very much during the match. Rogers pinned Sammartino for the third and deciding fall."
Used to love this stuff

A Bobo Brazil reference. When I started reading the thread I just knew someone would do it. Golden age of wrestling, at least for me. RIP Bruno - he owned the Garden just as much in his field as Billy Joel in his.
let's not forget Golden Boy Arnold Scolan who

Met him at LGA

in wrestling when I started watching as a kid, but I don't remember if I ever actually saw him wrestle. The always plugged the big names on the TV broadcasts, but didn't show the top matches. You had to go see them live. My first memories were more of guys like Lewin and Curtis and the Fabulous Kangaroos
