Saquon Barkley’s agents don’t want him to go to Cleveland

NYG27 : 4/18/2018 11:21 am
Quote:

“His Roc Nation handlers, however, don’t want him to be taken No. 1,” Ben Baskin writes in SI. “They don’t want him in Cleveland. They want him to go second to the Giants and play in the media capital of the world. That’s where you can become the Face of the League. His manager even implored him to pull an Eli Manning and demand that the Browns not draft him. Barkley never considered the option.”

One week till the draft, should be real interesting if this does go down.
Hope the giants get him

yes its a short term fix but the kid looks like the real deal
No agent in their right mind

wants their client to go to CLE. Not even to do with money, but with human decency.

If true Barkley declined, says a lot (good) about his character.
It has to suck to be a Browns fan

and read every year about the rumors that many of the top draft prospects are actively trying to be drafted by your team. True or not, it seems every year there are at least rumors prospects want to avoid Cleveland.

If that was suggested to Barkley and he declined, good for him.
I thought Cleveland was a more desirable spot

Than NY? Adam Schefter reported as much during the HC hiring process.
Eli and Elway were special.

Most athletes want to be number one at everything, no matter what the cost.
Once we draft Barkley

Decisions like that by Barkley are why he's worthy of the #2 pick
Torrag : 4/18/2018 11:31 am : link
Ideally I'd prefer not to use such a rare draft position on a RB and there are several better scenarios to actually drafting him imo. That said if he is the pick he checks all the boxes including DG's Gold Jacket criteria.
This makes me like
DonnieD89 : 4/18/2018 11:31 am : link
the kid more. He is a class act. I want him badly to go to the Giants, but it he is not selected by the them, I want him to go to Cleveland. The Browns fans deserve him. They have had enough downers.
As if not be drafted by Cleveland means he goes to NYC
Milton : 4/18/2018 11:34 am : link
Maybe he winds up in Indianapolis or Buffalo...and for a lot less money.
We're supposed to be linking to these sources,

Which probably explains

why they had him wear the giants shirt.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean he and his agents know his worth so that just goes to show he's worth our pick?
It would be funny if he drops out of the top ten...
Milton : 4/18/2018 11:46 am : link
And afterwards the Browns say it was between him and Chubb with the 4th pick, but they didn't want to disappoint his "handlers" and so they went with Chubb.
This New York media advantage is so overblown.

Think of some of the "Faces of the League" over the past couple decades. How many of them have played in the New York City market? How many haven't?

Aaron Rodgers is in Wisconsin. J.J. Watt is in Texas. Tom Brady is in Massachusetts. Peyton Manning was in Indiana for most of his career. Drew Brees has been in Louisiana most of his career. And on and on and on...

Does Lebron play Football?? Different Sport.. also Lebron is from Ohio.. and his legacy as the next great NBA player started when he was in high school in Ohio.. so being drafted by Cleveland was more of a natural progression..

And he ditched them to get his first titles in Miami with the super team he created, the time where I decided to stop being a true fan of the NBA.

does the NY media advantage seem to work. For other sports, an athlete would be better served being a big fish in a small pond, with lower income taxes.

Regardless of what sport he plays or where he was born, the point is that you can become a megastar in Cleveland, you don't need to play in a major media market.

well if your going to completely ignore that basketball and football are different sports.. and that basketball has always has always marketed individual stars over teams, that there are few basketball players on a team so individual players are more marketable, that basketball fans tend to like players (not just teams).. You have people that just love Lebron.. periodn.. they will watch the team to watch LEBRON play.. they might not necessarily be fans of that team.. they are more fans of the player..

and ignore that Lebron being born in Ohio.. Playing his early basketball in Ohio.. being a legendary high school player in Ohio.. Being marketed as the next great NBA player since his very early days in Ohio.. and then being drafted by an Ohio based team..

Then sure..

OH yeah and its not FOOTBALL.. Barkley wont be as big as Lebron.. ever... and if Im his management team.. YES I hope he winds up in the New York area.. do I think they told him to pull an Elway or Manning?? No.. Do I think they would prefer him being in New York than in Cleveland.. hell yeah..

Honestly do you think Odell would be as huge as he is marketing wise if he was in Cleveland.. please.. just stop..

A head coach isn't trying to build a brand, market themselves, nab a shoe deal, etc. Different when it comes to the athletes.

You're moving the goal posts. Of course there are more marketing opportunities in NYC and any manager would prefer his client to be on the New York stage, but it's not necessary to becoming a megastar and the difference isn't significant enough for you to ask your client to go down the road that Eli went down, as you yourself admitted.
p.s.--So you please just stop!

You are only thinking of national marketing opportunities.
Larger markets give you more local marketing dollars to grab.

The brand thing is overblown, especially for football. Just look at this list of endorsement deals from 2016. The first NFL is Peyton Manning, and he's not on the list until #20. You don't get to a non-QB until 62 (Demaryius Thomas). The non-QBs come from Denver, Atlanta, Carolina, Dallas, Cincinatti, NYG, Philly, Pitt, KC, NO, Buffalo, and Washington. Not all huge markets.

Hey now, key word there was "trying!"
GiantFilthy : 4/18/2018 1:42 pm : link
These kids have agents telling them they will make them a star. It may be difficult to actually get that brand, but it is definitely a consideration when you are an ultra-hyped prospect looking at the differences of NY and Ohio.
This "rumor" has already been shot down

That has nothing to do with the status of Cleveland as a small media market. It has everything to do with the Browns being a spectacularly inept organization.
