“His Roc Nation handlers, however, don’t want him to be taken No. 1,” Ben Baskin writes in SI. “They don’t want him in Cleveland. They want him to go second to the Giants and play in the media capital of the world. That’s where you can become the Face of the League. His manager even implored him to pull an Eli Manning and demand that the Browns not draft him. Barkley never considered the option.” |
If true Barkley declined, says a lot (good) about his character.
If that was suggested to Barkley and he declined, good for him.
Can you elaborate? Do you mean he and his agents know his worth so that just goes to show he's worth our pick?
Aaron Rodgers is in Wisconsin. J.J. Watt is in Texas. Tom Brady is in Massachusetts. Peyton Manning was in Indiana for most of his career. Drew Brees has been in Louisiana most of his career. And on and on and on...

But none of them are in Cleveland..

Think of some of the "Faces of the League" over the past couple decades. How many of them have played in the New York City market? How many haven't?

Lebron James
Does Lebron play Football?? Different Sport.. also Lebron is from Ohio.. and his legacy as the next great NBA player started when he was in high school in Ohio.. so being drafted by Cleveland was more of a natural progression..

And he ditched them to get his first titles in Miami with the super team he created, the time where I decided to stop being a true fan of the NBA.

Regardless of what sport he plays or where he was born, the point is that you can become a megastar in Cleveland, you don't need to play in a major media market.
well if your going to completely ignore that basketball and football are different sports.. and that basketball has always has always marketed individual stars over teams, that there are few basketball players on a team so individual players are more marketable, that basketball fans tend to like players (not just teams).. You have people that just love Lebron.. periodn.. they will watch the team to watch LEBRON play.. they might not necessarily be fans of that team.. they are more fans of the player..
and ignore that Lebron being born in Ohio.. Playing his early basketball in Ohio.. being a legendary high school player in Ohio.. Being marketed as the next great NBA player since his very early days in Ohio.. and then being drafted by an Ohio based team..
Then sure..
OH yeah and its not FOOTBALL.. Barkley wont be as big as Lebron.. ever... and if Im his management team.. YES I hope he winds up in the New York area.. do I think they told him to pull an Elway or Manning?? No.. Do I think they would prefer him being in New York than in Cleveland.. hell yeah..
Honestly do you think Odell would be as huge as he is marketing wise if he was in Cleveland.. please.. just stop..

Than NY? Adam Schefter reported as much during the HC hiring process.
A head coach isn't trying to build a brand, market themselves, nab a shoe deal, etc. Different when it comes to the athletes.
Honestly do you think Odell would be as huge as he is marketing wise if he was in Cleveland.. please.. just stop..
p.s.--So you please just stop!

You are only thinking of national marketing opportunities.
Larger markets give you more local marketing dollars to grab.

You're moving the goal posts. Of course there are more marketing opportunities in NYC and any manager would prefer his client to be on the New York stage, but it's not necessary to becoming a megastar and the difference isn't significant enough for you to ask your client to go down the road that Eli went down, as you yourself admitted.
p.s.--So you please just stop!
Again.. you brought up Lebron.. different sport.. different climate.. and NO I wouldnt tell a player to do that because I think its bad publicity..
Anyway.. you have a nice Day Milton..

That has nothing to do with the status of Cleveland as a small media market. It has everything to do with the Browns being a spectacularly inept organization.
