Considering how endeared Eli is by ownership, I can see them passing up QB at #2
DG running the draft or not, I would say a decision that high up you can bet ownership will have a big say in it. If you go QB at #2 you are basically saying to Eli this is your last year. A QB you are high on late round 1 (via trade up) or early rounds 2 or even 3 changes the dynamic drastically.
Right or wrong, if Giants goals are:
1. Do 'right' (in their eyes) by Eli (after last years debacle) and give him to the end of his contract (which the Giants are big on) . That means 2 years IF he plays well this year under a much better HC/OC combination and improved OL.
2. Do 'right' by Davis Webb who has been the consummate back up the day he stepped into the Giants facility and has busted his butt. A model QB understudy and exactly the persona the Giants love for their QB.
3. Take a QB later in draft (but still top 3 rounds) that you have a very high grade on like Lauletta, Mike White, or maybe Faulk. So the 'investment' is not as high but he can also provide competition and insurance for Davis Webb in case he doesn't pan out.
4. Also just as important a rare 'transformational' grade on a player you can take at the top of draft instead of a QB in Barkley.
This is well within their M.O. to do this. I am not saying I agree with this per se, but I could totally see Giants ownership doing this type of thing. Eli is like family to them (plus of course he brought 2 Super Bowl rings here). For better or for worse, this is an extremely loyal organization to a fault.
Also if you don't think that ownership can't have emotional ties to a multiple Super Bowl winning QB that will lead them to make an 'emotional' decision, check out what Kraft did to Belicheck at the likely behest on Tom Brady.
They just lost their future QB in Garrapolo against Bill's strong wishes for a 2nd round pick.
Yes.
Also the same ownership that said he appreciates how teams like the Packers transitioned from one franchise QB to the next?
You run an organization like that and you aren't going to win shit, and you don't deserve to win shit.
If we pass on QB at 2 we deserve to become the new Jets of NY.
If Mara tells DG to pass on qb because Eli will be butthurt than this team deserves a decade of qb hell

“There was a directive given several weeks back by co-owner John Mara to start looking closely at the top college quarterbacks, multiple sources told ESPN. This occurred around the time it became apparent that the Giants’ season was headed nowhere, in part, because wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would be out with a broken ankle.”
People have forgotten this
That’s a pretty big hint - combined with the espn piece on college QBs -. 1979 we drafted Simms. GM/HC/QB = wholesale changes

is that you?
Rinse and repeat every year, including this thread that has another "list" of what the Giants need to do.
The franchise will always love Eli, but that doesn't mean they'll make a bad decision by hitching their wagons to a 37 year old QB who's on the decline.
Let's hope Gettleman has his eyes on the prize and drafts the right guy rather than catering to the Eli apologists.

Not saying this is the approach I would take since I want Rosen but We could go slightly later in the draft for a QB we are high on like Lauletta.
QB with the 5th draft pick - Lauletta
The best path to winning another Super Bowl is finding the next franchise QB

But despite popular assumptions, that doesn't mean we absolutely must draft a QB at #2. I think having Eli as the franchise for 15 years has some people assuming our only option is to draft another potential franchise QB.
