NFT: Soooooo. Our March school trip was cancelled

Koldegaard : 4/18/2018 4:20 pm
due to a forecast of 10 inches of snow and all planes from Europe being cancelled the day of our trip. What a bummer standing in Copenhagen Airport with 115 students and having to tell them that we were heading home.

Luckily we have received a compensatory trip from May 16-21st.

Sadly no Brooklyn Nets game or Islanders. But we get to see the Mets (not the same but still ok).

So I have a question about an activity. I am the contact teacher for 9 students and originally we were going to the NYC rescue mission to serve food to the people in need. They don't have room for us now, my second suggestion would be visiting Coney Island and the Theme park out there. But it seems to be closed during the week.
So does anybody have some cool/interesting stuff to do with a group of teenagers for about 6 hours during the day.
As I have been to NYC many times I can easily do the usual touristy stuff which we are already doing. I want the kids to have some special experiences. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Any of the museums would be good

And you could spend time in Central Park as well. You could kill a week in the Met, your biggest problem in six hours would be prioritizing what to see.

WTC memorial is free, going up WTC1 is expensive and time consuming but it is a cool view.

One more sports recommendation - NYCFC

New York City Football Club has a match on Saturday, 5/19 at 1pm. They play at Yankee Stadium and tickets should be very affordable. They're currently the top team in Major League Soccer.
The Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium inside it

were always fun for me as a kid and teen.

Also, a Broadway show could be a cool thing to do.
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge

is kind of a cool thing to do. When you're in the city, you get kind of swallowed up by buildings. This gives some panorama to the city and you get to see an historical architectural achievement while you're doing it. The free Staten Island ferry delivers the same kind of thing. Naturally, both are very easy on the wallet.
NYCFC is a good, affordable idea

You also get to see Yankee Stadium and the Bronx. A different side of NYC

The East River Ferry provides awesome views of the entire city. You can get on at 34th and get off at DUMBO and then walk over the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan. You get great views of skyline and go under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges. It's a lot of fun and only $2.75 a person.
You may want to consider the Circle Line

boat trip around Manhattan Island. It is a good way to kill a couple hours. Also, there is the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier Museum.
I second the AMNH and Planetarium

and Governors Island can be a fun day trip if the weather is decent.
Thank you so much guys

On the museum front, the Met is really one of the greatest museums in the world, with it being embedded in Central Park and the nearby the Guggenheim, it is nice to spend an afternoon uptown.

I hate midtown but The MOMA is an important museum. Lots of Van Gogh (starry night), Andy Warhol, Dali, Lichtnestein, Picasso, Pollock, Hopper...can't say enough there but it depends on your audience.

A nice cheap, scenic trip is to ride the staten island ferry there and back...the views from there are just about the best, especially at night. Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge (and back) is a similar type of view that someone else has already mentioned.

Everything mentioned above is terrific, one not yet mentioned gem that really gets into the history or NYC and immigration into the USA is the Tenement Museum. That is practically made for school groups and generally regarded as one of the best museums in the city.

FWIW, I'd rather go to a Mets game than an NBA game any day of the week, but that's me ... welcome to the city!

Top of the Rock

If you decide to do a building observation deck, don’t do 1WTC or the Empire State Building. Lines can be ridiculous. Instead, do Rockefeller Center (Top of the Rock). No, the building is not as tall. But it’s at the top of a hill, so the overall elevation is pretty close to the same. Wait times are far, far less. And you get to SEE the Empire State Building and 1WTC.
