due to a forecast of 10 inches of snow and all planes from Europe being cancelled the day of our trip. What a bummer standing in Copenhagen Airport with 115 students and having to tell them that we were heading home.
Luckily we have received a compensatory trip from May 16-21st.
Sadly no Brooklyn Nets game or Islanders. But we get to see the Mets (not the same but still ok).
So I have a question about an activity. I am the contact teacher for 9 students and originally we were going to the NYC rescue mission to serve food to the people in need. They don't have room for us now, my second suggestion would be visiting Coney Island and the Theme park out there. But it seems to be closed during the week.
So does anybody have some cool/interesting stuff to do with a group of teenagers for about 6 hours during the day.
As I have been to NYC many times I can easily do the usual touristy stuff which we are already doing. I want the kids to have some special experiences. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
WTC memorial is free, going up WTC1 is expensive and time consuming but it is a cool view.
Also, a Broadway show could be a cool thing to do.
The East River Ferry provides awesome views of the entire city. You can get on at 34th and get off at DUMBO and then walk over the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan. You get great views of skyline and go under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges. It's a lot of fun and only $2.75 a person.
I hate midtown but The MOMA is an important museum. Lots of Van Gogh (starry night), Andy Warhol, Dali, Lichtnestein, Picasso, Pollock, Hopper...can't say enough there but it depends on your audience.
A nice cheap, scenic trip is to ride the staten island ferry there and back...the views from there are just about the best, especially at night. Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge (and back) is a similar type of view that someone else has already mentioned.
Everything mentioned above is terrific, one not yet mentioned gem that really gets into the history or NYC and immigration into the USA is the Tenement Museum. That is practically made for school groups and generally regarded as one of the best museums in the city.
FWIW, I'd rather go to a Mets game than an NBA game any day of the week, but that's me ... welcome to the city!
