Lots of Barkley loving from Tiki

As far as the quality of the player, Barber sees a gem in Barkley, and not only for what he can do in the running game and passing game. Barber was there when Eli Manning broke in in 2004 and sees Saquon Barkley rejuvenating the back end of Mannings career.

Thats when Eli has been at his best, when hes had a great run game to complement what he does, Barber said. When you look at the totality, this is why the Giants drafting a quarterback doesnt make sense. You dont need one right now. Its not like Eli is decrepit and he cant move and he cant throw the out-route and the go-route anymore. He can do all of those things, he just hasnt had time to.

If you have an opportunity and you cant move out of that pick, Saquon Barkley is the best player in this draft, Barber said. Physically he is a freak. Mentally and emotionally hes solid. I would love to see him come to the Giants.

Barkley love everywhere

But in a deep RB class I'm not sure you pick him at two. I think Derrius Guice is a much better fit for Giants. A more explosive version of Bradshaw. Runs angry. Trade back to five, grab Nelson and picks, do what it takes to get Guice and lets play some power football.

You may or may not be correct, but you STILL have to find a willing trading partner

followed up by justifying this pick as if the main concern is "right now" doesn't add up. This pick isn't just about "right now". It's about two, three, five, maybe ten years from now.
He's right about Eli

The question is how much better is Barkley than a back the Giants could draft in rd 2 or rd 3?

I'm not sure Shurmur wants a power back or game. Nor do I think even with Nelson the Giants O-Line can run a power game.

Seems to me Shurmur wants a more multi dimensional RB, and likes to use them in the passing game. Barkley fits much better IMO.

I'd love to see them add to the O-Line in Rd 2.though.
To be repetitive,
Big Blue '56 : 4/18/2018 7:45 pm : link
If there is no strong consensus on a Qb at 2, drafting a possible Faulk type back should be a no-brainer imo

Totally agree.

Teamed with OBJ,Shepard and Engram it'd be a fun O to watch. Throw in whoever they go with at WR2, it could be really dynamic.
Huh

Props for Eli from Tiki?

Did Tiki change his thoughts on Eli and I missed it?

It's a possibility

I saw an interview with Colin Cowherd and Jason Sehorn

where Sehorn made the same argument as Tiki and Sehorn

also thinks there is too much potential for a QB controversy

and a split in the team if the Giant take a QB at #2.......

That whole thing was mostly a media creation anyway. Nothing Tiki said was intended to be malicious but that's how the media made it look.

Drafting Barkley is just about drafting a RB
Rjanyg : 4/18/2018 8:58 pm : link
It's about taking a great player who will need to be accounted for. When NYG selected OBJ and yes they were looking for a WR but he became a game changing player. Barkley just happens to be a game changing player at another position. I keep hearing that RB is a position that can be had later but when considering Barkley, it is more about the level of athlete he is.

I understand that Kamara and Hunt were drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, that doesn't mean you pass in Barkley to pick a different back. Look at Fournette. He is helping turn Jacksonville into a playoff team. He took a lot of pressure off of Bortles and now Bortles has a contract extension. Funny how everyone wanted Eli to be traded to Jac because they had a great defense and a great running game, but now some Giant fans think we can't win with Eli if we add Barkley and rebuild the O Line and get the defense back on track.
People said the same thing about Blair Thomas
arniefez : 4/18/2018 9:02 pm : link
and Ki-Jana Carter. That's what the Giants are hoping if they draft him. That doesn't mean it will happen.

My dream is that Elway has a major boner for Rosen and DG gets fifth pick, a two, a three, and next yr first for him. Giants could trade back into first for Guice and maybe get Ragnow too ??

My point is, at the time Tiki was trying to launch a career in media, but he couldnt hide some arrogance and bitterness in his early comments about Eli and Coughlin - thats what I took as somewhat malicious.

Loved Tiki the player, one of our all time greats. Tiki the person? Eh.

The statement that Eli has been a threat his best
j_rud : 4/18/2018 9:59 pm : link
with a great run game isn't really true. First of all, any QB benefits/operates better with a great run game. Second, Eli was at his best in the 2011 playoff run, and the run game was dog shit that entire year.
Eli was at his best in all of 2011
GeorgeAdams33 : 4/19/2018 1:19 am : link
The playoff run was aided by the sudden emergence of a very good running game that had been non-existent for most of the regular season. Even more dramatic was the turnaround on defense aided by Coughlin putting his foot in a few asses that needed a jump start. JPP had a great season, but the rest of the D was napping until Coughlin woke them up.

I don't want to be rude, but you really do not understand that Kamara and Hunt were picked in the 2 and 3rd rounds because if you did you would not be trotting out Fournette, who had a worse season then Kamara and Hunt. Fournette averaged 3.9 YPC, Kamara racked up like 6 ypc and had 800 yards receiving. Hunt also had a better season than Fournette. Plus, Jacksonville had already put the pieces together to draft someone like Fournette that high. When we have the talent they have on their roster on ours, then talk to me about drafting a RB this high.
